This boy was named Jehad al-Masri. He was from my city of Beit Lahia. He was only 13 years old.
His life was not worth less than the life of an American child.

Thu, July 10, 2025Jul. 10—"A group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the #CumberlandCountyCourthouse on Thursday morning ahead of a court hearing for their peers who were arrested at a protest in May.
"More than a dozen people rallied with signs and a #PalestinianFlag as 10 people — half of the group that was previously arrested — awaited their arraignments. During their hearings, they each pleaded not guilty to one count of #obstructing a public way. The rest of the group will appear in court at a later date, the protesters said.
"Jamila Levasseur, 70, of #WaldoME, was one of the 20 people arrested in Portland on May 21 after police accused them of blocking the intersection of Commercial and Pearl streets near the U.S. Custom House. She said at the time that she'd be arrested as many times as necessary to bring attention to the widespread #starvation and ongoing #Israeli airstrikes in #Gaza.
"When appearing at the stand, Levasseur told District Court Judge Jed French that she was 'protesting against #genocide in #Gaza' before entering her not-guilty plea. She referenced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu's recent talks with President Donald #Trump, recognizing their joint strikes on #Iran and discussing plans for a 60-day #ceasefire that would halt Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza.
" 'Those are the #WarCriminals,' Levasseur said. 'We're not criminals.'
"Levasseur said she couldn't have anticipated that the war would still be going on 21 months after it began. She said she's thankful that a group of attorneys stepped forward to represent the protesters for free, and that the May demonstration in the Old Port attracted a new, larger crowd of supporters.
" 'More and more people are waking up, learning what's going on, horrified, and want to do something,' Levasseur said. 'The people we were arrested with, I didn't even know them all when we were arrested. ... It's not the usual suspects. It's just more ordinary people.'
"Levasseur and #AbigailFuller, 65, of Portland, were also arrested at a February 2024 protest on Franklin Street for obstructing a public way. Their charges in those cases have since been dropped.
"Fuller, who is also a lecturer at the University of Southern Maine, said she felt supported by the group of people outside the courthouse while walking into her arraignment. She pleaded not guilty and also told the judge she was protesting genocide when she was arrested.
" 'It feels good to be starting the process,' Fuller said. 'The Maine courts system takes a really long time, often, to get through, but this is the first step.'
"Fuller said she appreciates seeing new faces at protests, especially as airstrikes and shootings in the #GazaStrip continue, killing people attempting to receive #HumanitarianAid.
" 'Unfortunately, Palestinian deaths are not on the front pages of the newspaper anymore,' Fuller said. 'So, we're trying to keep that in the public eye.' "

"As #Palestinians released from Israeli imprisonment recount torture and other abuse suffered at the hands of their former captors, the Trump administration on Friday approved a new $3 billion weapons package for Israel.
"The new package, reported by Zeteo's Prem Thakker, includes nearly $2.716 billion worth of bombs and weapons guidance kits, as well as $295 million in bulldozers. The Trump administration said that 'an emergency exists that requires the immediate sale,' allowing it to bypass Congress, as the #Biden administration did on multiple occasions. However, the weapons won't be delivered until 2026 or 2027.
"From October 2023 to October 2024, Israel received a record $17.9 billion worth of U.S. arms as it waged a war of annihilation against the #GazaStrip that left more than 170,000 #Palestinians dead, maimed, or missing and millions more displaced, starved, or sickened. Israel is facing #genocide allegations in an International Court of Justice case brought by South Africa. The International Criminal Court has also issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister #YoavGallant.
"Reporting on the new package came after U.S. Sen. #BernieSanders (I-Vt.) on Monday announced an effort to block four other arms sales totaling $8.56 billion in offensive American weaponry to Israel.
"Meanwhile, some of the approximately 1,000 Palestinians released by Israel as part of a prisoner swap described grim stories of abuse by Israeli forces. The former detainees, who were arrested but never charged with any crimes, 'have returned visibly malnourished and scarred by the physical and psychological torture they say they faced in Israeli prisons,' according to The Washington Post. Some returned to what were once their homes to find them destroyed and their relatives killed or wounded by Israeli forces.
"Eyas al-Bursh, a doctor volunteering at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City when he was captured by Israeli troops, was held in Sde Teiman and the Ofer military prison in the illegally occupied West Bank for 11 months.
"'The places where we were held were harsh, sleep was impossible, and we remained handcuffed and blindfolded,' al-Bursh told the Post.
"'We endured psychological and physical torture without a single day of respite—whether through beatings, abuse, punches, or even verbal insults and humiliation,' he added.
"The #IsraelDefenseForces told the Post that it 'acts in accordance with Israeli and international law in order to protect the rights of the detainees held in the detention and questioning facilities.'"

"More than 200 people gathered in Deering Oaks on Saturday afternoon for a #MayDay rally to highlight the interconnected struggles between workers and students worldwide and the Palestinian people. Demonstrators then marched to the University of Southern Maine campus, where they gathered on the lawn in front of the McGoldrick Center to continue their call for an end to the assault on displaced Palestinians in #Rafah, a permanent cease-fire in the region and divestment from Israeli interests.
"The rally, organized by #MaineLaborForPalestine and #MaineStudentsForPalestine, comes as protests against Israel’s offensive have intensified on college campuses around the nation in recent weeks.
"Students on #Maine campuses have taken stands against the war, holding protests and calling on their schools to #divest from defense funds.
"Those protests have not mirrored the tense and chaotic scenes that have played out on college campuses in other parts of the country, including at the University of California Los Angeles recently, where officers in riot gear surged against a crowd of demonstrators.
"Police have arrested more than 2,000 people during pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses in recent weeks, according to a tally by the Associated Press.
"Emma, an organizer with Maine Students for Palestine who would not disclose her last name, came to the Portland rally straight from her graduation from the University of Southern Maine. Wearing a graduation gown, she described the horror of watching students 'experience police brutality for building a community dedicated to ending a genocide.'
"'I graduate today and I think about #Gaza. I think about how there are absolutely no universities left in Gaza. How over 14,000 children will never reach graduation because of #oil, #LandGrabs and deep- seated racism,' she said.
"#JillStein, the #GreenParty’s nominee for president, also spoke at the rally. She was arrested last weekend during a protest at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and charged with assaulting a police officer. She said she was assaulted with a bicycle, thrown to the ground and zip- cuffed while she was being arrested."
