  1. Oh look, it's a bunch of "mad" witches 🧙‍♀️ who think they can cast a spell on Murdoch's empire with hashtags and #boycotts. Apparently, they've been "calling out" media bias for a decade—because nothing says "effective activism" like angry tweets and overpriced merchandise. 🧹😂

“Voice & Vision” is an 8-month workshop (starting 18 April) for all young people aged 18 and over, exploring the role of film and media as tools for activism.

In weekly sessions, participants learn how moving images can serve as tools for protest, education and solidarity.

They produce their own short films and media projects that highlight their perspectives on current crises – from climate change and social inequality to war, migration and gentrification.

  3. Such a great quote from the Manifesto about state violence:

"Ultimately, the state is another concentration of powerful interests, with its hierarchy of institutions, armed forces, policing over its people, and often punitive welfare systems where, while elites hoard their immense wealth, people scramble for scraps of assistance to experience a life less miserable – assistance that can be withdrawn at the whims of a government whose politicians swap, switch, and change positions, portfolios, and policies in the corridors of power; policies that can remove support for swathes of people with the mere flick of a pen; no sword even needed to commit this kind of violence. And that’s exactly what it is."

  4. This fantastic Manifesto by @MediaActivist does the difficult task of comprehensively and clearly outlining the systemic crises we face in late stage capitalism - including climate crisis, the ongoing pandemic, rise of right wing authoritarianism, hegemony of corporate capitalist companies etc. - but also at the same time making you still feel a sense of hope, resilience, to do something to fight back, together, through anarchistic praxis. Please visit, digest, share!

Israeli officials are accusing major news media of coordinating with Hamas, painting Palestinian stringers as terrorist operatives.

  6. Today I did a search for "Indymedia" on SpewTube. Despite more than two decades of radical videographers uploading web video to projects affiliated with the Indymedia network, I found very little. What I did find couldn't be easily downloaded, despite being public interest media, created to be shared.

If only we'd had a tool like PeerTube in the mid-2000s.

    A little context...

Narrative is an important tool for folks looking to change the world for the better, in part by changing the stories we tell one another.

I feel you. Sometimes I put a lot of effort in a toot and it just dies immediately. This is frustrating, and you probably feel it quite often a day, as you generate a lot of (wonderful) output.
I have several thoughts about this:

    1) First thing is the timezones: because of the strict temporal order on Mastodon, it is difficult that your toots arrive people in other timezones or with other Mastodon-activity patterns.
A solution could be to autoboost (automatically ? Somebody should make a script for this...) after 8 or 12 hours.
In your case this seems perfectly valid to me. If somebody doesn't like it, they can mute your boosts but still receive your toots (as you mostly write your own toots and don't rely on boosting other people's messages, the experience would be similar to now).
When I go to your profile page, I see how many toots you made I have missed... (Mastodon toots are pretty ephimeral).
You could do a poll about this whether your followers think that autoboost after X hours is a good idea.

    2) you seldom use hashtags. I am not sure whether people use them really, except for really nerdy topics (I, for example, still can't figure out how to filter for multiple hashtags simultaneously, making the feature not very useful). So, I am unsure whether they really add discoverability or not.

    3) I usually feel hesitant to boost too frequently about similar topics from the same channel (my reason is, that if somebody of my followers is really interested in the topic, they should follow you directly). This might be a wrong understanding of Mastodon-etiquette, but I can't help (maybe due to cultural-educational trauma, I am always worried about annoying people that follow me 😅).

    4) we have to be realistic about thw amount od ACTIVE people on Mastodon. It's growing and I think, at least in English (and some other languages) the critical mass is reached to make it interesting and engaging, but many accs are relatively inactive and for not super mainstream topics there aren't so many people here.

    5) we have to be emotionally resilient in media, and even more in social media. Even when a toot is not boosted, it has probably reached hundreds of your followers (not everybody gives stars, sometimes also because they don't want to clog your notifications).
This reach is something we should not forget.

Anyway, thank you for your great work and I hope you find the energy to continue it for a long time (but taking care of your emotional/mental wellbeing, please).

  11. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

    WITH MAYOR LINDSAY - 4/19/1970, WNEW-TV, NYC

In 1970, New York City's cops and government were still regularly harassing queer communities, raiding queer bars, arresting people, and engaging in job discrimination.

Mayor Lindsay refused to do anything about it or even meet with gay activists. So the Gay Activists Alliance disrupted the mayor's TV talk show to demand action. Some of it was questions shouted from the audience: "What are you doing to end job discrimination against homosexuals?" "Are you in favor of repeal of the sodomy laws?" And some was heckling: The mayor says "If you're stuck in a traffic jam, it's illegal to blow your horn." A GAA member shouts back "It's illegal in New York to blow anything!"

The show aired that night with the disruptions meticulously edited out. Ten days later, GAA had a meeting with Deputy Mayor Aurelio.
