  1. 2018 Italian Reds—Underrated Excellence

  2. This Riserva (one of wines used to celebrate the most recent anniversary of my Italian citizenship!) is showing a little too old on the nose & a bit browning around the edges. The palate is a lot better, with a bright feel. There's a somewhat dusty finish, but it blossoms a bit with air, proving to be still quite drinkable. It has time left, but preferable to drink it up now. I liked it finally, but I'm also not really sad it's the last bottle. That's good timing!

  3. "L’ipocrisia di certi imprenditori di #Barolo e #Barbaresco che vendono le loro bottiglie a 50€ l’una, e realizzano «margini di guadagno scandalosi grazie a paghe in nero di soli 3€ l’ora per 10-12 ore consecutive di lavoro»."

  4. Fun Italian #wine fact - If #nebbiolo grapes are grown on north facing slopes, the wines produced from them cannot be called #Barolo or #Barbaresco instead they go by the name Langhe nebbiolo. Most probably worth trying - less costly than the legends. Try Langhe nebbiolo that is 3-4 years old. #Italy #piedmont

  5. #ClimateChange means the areas of north western #Italy famed for the production of #Barolo and #Barbaresco wines are becoming too hot. #wine Vineyards will need to be a couple of hundred meters higher was told by someone who lives in the area.

  6. I've tried my first #Barbaresco and I enjoyed it. Brick in colour. It's 8 years old but still very high in acidity. It should have decanted two hours before having it but we couldn't wait. Scent of plum, blueberry and violet. Long finish with a fume aftertaste. #wine #winetasting #winelover

The Allegrini ($45 not too long after release) in a very different style (doh!) smelled older, but came around nicely. It is not as fresh or as young as the Mocca, but it still is lovely, with surprising elegance for the category, but full-bodied and mouth-coating. Drink up.

    Overall, pleased by the Italians. 🇮🇹 The wines, I mean. 😁 Forza Azurri. #wine #winesofitaly #amarone #barbaresco @moccagatta @allegrini

  9. Why Having A Cellar is a Good Thing,or lessons my students wish they paid attention to when I taught an intro wine course. Part I.
Ok, so as I get old, knees and back hurt and I can't play tennis any more. Surgery coming. There is a consolation. My cellar has gotten older and wines I've painstakingly collected and cellared have often reached a perfect place. On the left, the 2001 Urz Wurz, a two-star. Deep, rich, yet not very sweet, and fresh as a daisy. The '99 Donnhoff is a different beast, laser-like precision and a core of acidity. Also completely fresh. I bought a lot of 2001 Rieslings. They will outlive me!

The Moccagatta is in a perfect place, mature and harmonious, but firm. The last bottle of this I decanted for some time. It doesn't need it and it didn't help it. Here, I pulled the cork for an hour, then pour. Beautiful, fresh and lively with a core of acidity and the wood pulled in.

  10. This is a 2019 vintage and it took at least 8 HOURS for it to start to open up. Strong acidity and plush tannins will let this one cool down a bit with age. It definitely has the structure like all the best #Barbaresco #wine does 🥳 Cheers 🥂

  11. If you guessed #Barbaresco you were right! From the tiny village of Trezzo Tinella in #Cuneo comes this unsuspecting velvet hammer. The vines are located @ 450m in altitude in calcareous clay & rocky tuff. Intense red in color. You'll find an intense, elegant, & fruity nose, with tobacco & spicy notes. The palate is harmonious, balanced with an important body and a very pleasant, slightly spicy aftertaste. Natural yeast, organic farming makes this one stand out. That’s hard-mode wine-making…
