It shows better acidity and focus as it airs out. It's off-dry, but the acidity is a perfect counter. Pretty delicious, too, a peachy finish. It still leans more to young, that low fill even so, not yet middle aged? Debatable. But prime time. A great performance.

And they talk to me, keeping me in the loop. So, there's that.

Only 7.5% alcohol, it coats the palate and takes charge, refreshing the unseasonable warmth we had this week. It's Riesling weather, baby! Golden hued, it's in perfect shape.

This *** Auslese was a bit lower in level than normal. I correctly suspected minor seepage. Still, top Riesling is amazingly resilient. Was I concerned? No, sir! (Ok, well, a little.) 🍇

But it was fine, better than fine. Maybe a little more mature, but still youthful. It drank great--ripe, rich and a hint of peach, delicious with a bit of tension. It's indestructible! 7.5%.

1st bottle, hold it for 25+ years...and corked. C'mon! But I had a lot of this (have a few more) and don't recall prior TCA. Open another: super! That's my baby. What happened, sweetie? Early Halloween trick? 😈 Well, this 2d is delicate, very fresh, a little sweet on the edges, bright with bite. Hard to stop drinking this. At 7.5% alc. you don't have to. $23 then. ($$ might be tripled+ for new vintages.)

Been digging into my stash of this ($22 on release), the last about 6 months ago though. Time for more. Gotta catch up!

Still fresh, but maybe a little loss of energy over time. There's no rush with this '01 Spat, but also no point to holding it.

A tale of 2 Rieslings, both Spätlese, both super. The '99 Donnhoff ($23 on release) showed a touch of leakage, but once again, Riesling is indestructible. Youthful color. Fresh, crisp and tasty. The '01 Schaefer ($22 on release, although SRPs were higher!) may have a bit more concentration, but plenty of energy, especially as it warmed. Both 8.5%. The silky Foundi 2011 was so elegant, but also bright, powerful and pure, with a big finish. There was also a great 2013 Vinsanto from Santo Wines. For once, no Portuguese wines. Older Rieslings can be very young tasting.This tightly wound '01 Spatlese is plainly mature with complexity. And it has exciting acidity that eviscerates the modest sugar and lifts the fruit. There's a tense finish. If it doesn't taste young any more, it tastes great. Mature doesn't mean dead or dying. Around $22 on release. For fun, I saw one store only with it now, at over $200. This never got opened as it was not needed at the big Riesling-fest, but it became the next one in line. Opened recently, it drank well, not at all sweet with a mature overlay. I loved the nuanced finish. It was very nice and rather gentle. This is a good time to drink it, but as always, Riesling won't fall off the table. #wine #riesling #winesofgermany

About $27 near release. Despite some evidence of seepage at some point, it seemed unaffected, too dense and powerful to harm. It sees danger and laughs.Unctuously coating the palate, it takes the palate, but it's the crispness that matters here, slicing and dicing the fruit and sugar. The wine seems dense and rich, but not very sweet. It's pretty delicious; did I mention that? Rich and dense 3-star Spätlese, hardly seeming like a Spätlese. Much more interesting with age. The ripe peaches lean more to apricots now, improved by a burnished demeanor & complexity.Then there's a touch of concentrated mango. Don't let me give you the wrong impression.Big acidity here cuts through the sugar and the concentrated fruit. It balances the wine beautifully. Another great '01 Riesling that seems quite capable of outliving me. Under $20 on release.

One of my favorites of the many 2001s I bought. I just love the bright acidity in this and the way it constantly is at war with the modest sugar. There is still a touch of tartness. Fresh and youthful, lightly dancing across the tongue, it is not clear that it has even entered a moderately mature stage. A beauty that will certainly outlive me. #wine #winesofgermany #riesling

This 2001 Auslese Riesling is a good example of how big acidity can cut through sugar and fruit. Even now, some 20 years on, this has a touch of grapefruit. It is refreshing and tense. The sugar is the balancing factor. Impressive, with a lot of life left. In fact, it should pretty much outlive me.

Ok, so as I get old, knees and back hurt and I can't play tennis any more. Surgery coming. There is a consolation. My cellar has gotten older and wines I've painstakingly collected and cellared have often reached a perfect place. On the left, the 2001 Urz Wurz, a two-star. Deep, rich, yet not very sweet, and fresh as a daisy. The '99 Donnhoff is a different beast, laser-like precision and a core of acidity. Also completely fresh. I bought a lot of 2001 Rieslings. They will outlive me!

The Moccagatta is in a perfect place, mature and harmonious, but firm. The last bottle of this I decanted for some time. It doesn't need it and it didn't help it. Here, I pulled the cork for an hour, then pour. Beautiful, fresh and lively with a core of acidity and the wood pulled in.
