  1. All Xinomavro from Naoussa. It needed age, shows great now. It still opens tight, a little old school, with acidity and grip. It needs 30-40 minutes of air to evolve, open and become more harmonious. At that point, it's earthy, complex, crisp and wonderfully fresh, a beautifully balanced red with finesse. Loads of time left!

14% alc. New vintages are $30-ish, which makes this sophisticated, ageworthy and familiar red from a noted producer in N. Greece a nice deal.

  2. Hedgehog Vineyard isn't Alpha's top-of-the-line Xinomavro, but it's a great value point. Holding perfectly, it's classic--muscular but with superb mid-palate finesse and acidity that makes it seem very elegant and fresh.

The crisp, juicy finish is bursting with good fruit, so it has flavor to go with its classy demeanor.

No rush diving in. Mid-$20s, 13%.

  3. @winedrinker As in many regions, there is an old-school, new-wave debate. Classic Xino tends to be a bit tannic and in need of cellaring. But there are places making more accessible versions. Alpha Estate's, for instance, I love, and is rather accessible. Foundi is old school and I love that too.

Where do you draw the line? I dunno. There is no one answer. I taste the wine. Will it age? Balance? Does it work or not?

  4. This Naoussea, the "Lady of Naoussa," is a blend of Northern Greek Xinomavro vineyards (unlike the Estate wine) from Foundi winery, but it sure seems sophisticated.

Silky and tight, it has an earthy hint, plenty of power as it hits age 10, purity of fruit and fine acidity. The mid-palate finesse is admirable. It's old-school Xinomavro in the best sense, needing air and food. This is increasingly impressive as it sits.

    $30-ish, 13% alc.

  7. 2/2

When I saw it close to release, I thought it was great, but it was certainly unevolved. It is closer to stunning now, but it still can improve. Superb.

    14.3% alc. $45 near release.

  8. 2/2

It kept getting better, and I liked it more & more with food and air. It was gorgeous the next day.

It can still improve & last another decade, likely more. 13% alc, $40-ish

  9. This '04 Naoussa (all Xinomavro) is super. It has (no surprise) acquired more harmony in the cellar, but the brightness typical of the grape makes it fresh, lively and vibrant. If the tannins have moderated, this still has some power. The fruit is prime time, the mid-palate finesse is appealing.

Best of all, a fine bargain from big Boutari in Greece--around $30 in new vintages. This silky red looks like it will continue aging gracefully for 10+ years. 13% alc.

  10. Someone brought this familiar friend, Alpha Estate's Xinomavro Reserve VV (2020 vintage) from Northern Greece.

Sometimes a bit powerful in its youth, this had (so I'm told) a nice, but gentle slow-ox decant and it was drinking beautifully, fresh and fruity with silky texture and finesse in the mid-palate. It's always on the elegant side! The fruit is pure with some black cherry. Lovely. Around $50 these days.

  11. 2012 Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard from Alpha Estate in Northern Greece.

Reasonably priced, in the $20s, it still has aged beautifully, because it is Xinomavro. 😊 In perfect shape, it's ripe with good acidity, a juicy finish and a hint of funk. It's a good price point in Alpha's red lineup, a friendly style with some distinction. No rush, but this is a great time to dive in.

  12. This 2006 Naoussa bottling is Xinomavro, of course. They age! It's in beautiful shape, good acidity giving it a vibrant feel, and leading to a juicy finish. With brambles and dried plums, it tastes great. Adds finesse. It's even better for structure, and it has plenty of power and life left. Prime time stuff. Excellent QPR. $30-ish #wine #greece #xinomavro

  13. @tofu Their young vines is very well done. If you're interested, a reasonably priced old-vines solution is Alpha Estate's Vielles Vignes. Their style tends to be on the more polished side. #wine #greece #xinomavro #naoussa

  14. This 2016 blend opens a little creamy, but Xinomavro soon asserts itself. This is better balanced now than on release. It has improved. The acidity cuts through fruit, the Syrah adds a little earthiness and this works great. I normally think Xinomavro is more of a Barbaresco substitute, but this has a very Burgundian feel. The fruit aspect may be the Syrah, though. Will it surpass 2030? I'd say so, but take it in stages. 14% alc, $18 on release. #wine #winesofgreece #xinomavro @alpha_estate

  15. The 2018 XinomavRaw ($30) is from Oenops, aged in amphorae and sort of a natural wine concept. (So, the "raw.") This is a perfect food pairing, elegant, structured and fruity, but always supported by structure. Xinomavro means "sour black" or "acid black," and this tense red shows you why. There is tannic pop too. This has a long way to go and it takes over the palate. You could do a lot worse and spend a lot more. #wine #winesofgreece #xinomavro

  16. @marksquires yes exactly that. I prefer wines that have more character. I still would like to try a #MargaretRiver before I add #Chardonnay to "do not buy list". Lovely list of #GreekWine, will defo try some. Haven't tried anything from Greece yet, but I have been saving a bottle of #Xinomavro. #wine #winetasting

  17. This Xinomavro, arguably the best red grape in Greece and certainly my favorite, is a little different in this bottling from Vaeni Naoussa. At age 15+, it's in perfect shape and impressive. It has that earthy acidity you'd expect from maturing Nebbiolo, a comparison I like to make. Now, this bottling gets six months of heavy burn oak, which stands out when it is young and makes it a bit different. It has aged brilliantly, though, and pulled it in. Wish I had more. #wine #winesofgreece #xinomavro
