The Respect for Marriage Act, passed last year by Congress with strong bipartisan support, requires the federal government and states to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages. The law is not religious or nonreligious; it is a constitutionally enacted law of the United States
Another startling section by Severino concerns Covid-19 policies, opposition to which has galvanized conservative Christians.
He criticizes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s actions and wonders “how much risk mitigation is worth the price of shutting down churches on the holiest day of the Christian calendar and far beyond as happened in 2020? What is the proper balance of lives saved versus souls saved?”
That’s not a tough question to answer: The federal government does not need to worry about saving souls.

"The Christian nation"--and I use the term with reservation, and only because it's how they like to refer to themselves, has been building this movement, deliberately, painstakingly, and with remarkably steady progress, since the Civil Rights era (if not earlier). We got here because they've been playing the long game for decades and want their fundamentalist version of Sharia Law. I was inside this movement for a few years in the 80s & 90s, and am pretty sure it's time for me to do some more detailed writing on their strategies. For anyone wanting more detail, best book I can recommend at this moment is Kristin Kobes Du Mez's "Jesus and John Wayne." I don't find this part of the mindset much (any?) different from its mirror image in the #Christofacism I fled in the 90s. It's way easier to have a list of "rules" to substitute for judgment than to do your own thinking. Most immature kids would rather react than think, yes? It's not the only factor, but it's a big one.
