TITLE: Is fatness a feminist issue?

Recent research published in Sex Roles suggests that while many fat women identify as feminists, they do not consistently view their body size as a feminist issue. The study highlights a divide in how women understand their bodies, with some pointing to gendered double standards and societal discrimination, while others view their weight as a matter of personal responsibility.
Anti-fatness refers to the systemic and interpersonal prejudice directed at people with larger bodies. Feminist scholars have often linked this anti-fat stigma to traditional gender roles and patriarchal beauty norms. This perspective argues that societal pressure to be thin falls especially hard on women, creating toxic environments that negatively impact their body image, mental health, and social standing.
“American society is often fixated on how women look,” lead author Breanne Fahs, a professor of women and gender studies at Arizona State University and author of Fat and Furious: Igniting Radical Fat Resistance, told PsyPost. “Women are often told to be young, pretty, and skinny by their parents, partners, classmates, and strangers. Psychological research has often shown the problems with ‘thin idealization’ and living for a male gaze. In particular, women are criticized about having defective bodies, and they consequently fear gaining weight, try dangerous diets, and/or loathe their own bodies.”
“In the 1970s, second wave feminists warned that the fixation on slender bodies seriously hurt women and the slogan of ‘fat is a feminist issue’ was born,” Fahs added. “In the last twenty years there has been a growth of social movements that challenged the sexist assumptions of fat stigma, with the group called National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) leading the way.”
Research has shown that fat women generally face harsher social and economic consequences for their body size than fat men. In one study, fat women were 16 times more likely than fat men to report weight-related job discrimination, and other studies have found that fat women receive harsher judgments of their parenting and are more often denied loans, promotions, or apartments. Fat men, on the other hand, tend to face less stigma and fewer everyday indignities for similar body sizes.
Despite these documented disparities, it has remained an open question whether fat women themselves view their physical experiences through a political or feminist lens. Fahs and her colleague Eric Swank, a professor of social and cultural analysis at Arizona State University, sought to understand how fat women talk about this connection and whether they recognize the gendered dimensions of weight stigma that academics often discuss.
“Lots of research has looked at the causes and consequences of fat hatred among women of all body sizes,” Fahs explained. “Some studies have even looked at the reasons for being a fat activist, but the way fat women view feminism has mostly been overlooked.”
Fahs’s own work helped motivate the project. She has written about women’s dread of gaining weight, anti-fat bias in health care, and the relationships between fat therapists and fat patients. Her experience as both a professor and a practicing clinical psychologist left her curious about whether fat women see anti-fat stigma through a feminist lens.
To investigate this, the researchers interviewed 20 women living in the United States who self-identified as fat or overweight. The participants were recruited through local classified advertisements on Craigslist, allowing the research team to reach a geographically diverse group. The women ranged in age from 27 to 66, with an average age of 40. Half were women of color, 40 percent identified as bisexual or lesbian, and their body weights ranged from under 200 to over 300 pounds.
All 20 interviews were conducted by Fahs over video calls and lasted about 90 minutes each. She asked the women questions about their bodies, their social experiences, and their political perspectives. Two key questions guided the core of the analysis: whether the participants considered themselves feminists, and whether they believed fatness was a feminist issue. The researchers did not provide a definition of feminism, allowing each participant to respond according to her own understanding.
The participants’ responses pointed to a complex divide between personal identification and political frameworks. Thirteen women explicitly identified as feminists, three said they might use the label for certain issues, and four rejected it entirely. When asked if fatness was a feminist issue, the group was evenly split: eight said yes, four said maybe, and eight said no. Several self-identified feminists insisted that fatness was not a feminist issue, while one woman, identified in the study as Marge, firmly rejected the feminist label but still stated that it was.
The researchers identified six distinct themes in how the participants evaluated the issue. Three of the themes supported a connection between weight and feminism. Four women highlighted gendered double standards, observing that society readily accepts fat men as funny or relatable, while fat women face intense social disapproval for the same size. Three women described fatness as a central way women are judged, explaining that a woman’s social worth remains tied to physical appearance.
Overt discrimination, tied for the most common theme linking the two concepts, was raised by four participants. These women cited institutional obstacles in hiring, healthcare, and media representation as evidence of a broader feminist problem. When discussing these barriers, Fahs noted that participants “elaborated how workplaces, hospitals, schools, and families discriminate against women who are fat.”
The remaining three themes rejected the connection between body size and feminism. Three women stated that fatness has nothing to do with feminism, arguing that body weight is an individual matter of personal responsibility and lifestyle rather than gender politics. Two women maintained that fatness has nothing to do with gender, arguing that weight stigma affects people of all genders equally and should not be framed as a women’s issue.
In the final theme, three participants argued that fat women deserve ridicule, framing teasing as a natural consequence of body size or a motivator to lose weight.
Describing these women, Fahs said, “They thought fat women were supposed to be ‘made fun of by someone who is not fat’ and fat people ‘should lose weight’ if they do not want to be teased. This diversity of perspectives shows how fat resistance and feminist fat liberation perspectives still diverge from narratives of self-blame and ridicule.”
The findings point to an uneven alignment between feminist theory and the everyday perspectives of fat women. While some participants expressed an awareness of gender inequality, others expressed anti-fat attitudes, which the authors say could reflect internalized stigma or a form of anti-feminism, or viewed their struggles as entirely personal. The researchers noted that framing fatness through a political lens rather than individual failure could help people challenge anti-fat bias and reduce feelings of personal self-blame.
As with all research, there are some caveats to consider. The study relied on a small group of 20 women recruited through Craigslist during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the sample does not reflect the full population of fat women in the United States. In addition, the questions about feminism came after about an hour of discussion focused on fatness, which may have influenced the way participants answered.
The study also asked participants whether they identified as feminists rather than measuring specific feminist beliefs, and several women appeared to associate feminism primarily with the #MeToo movement or perceived extremes. Both researchers identify as fat feminists, and Fahs conducted all 20 interviews herself, which could have shaped how participants discussed sensitive topics. Future research using standardized surveys could help clarify how widespread these viewpoints are across the broader population.

TITLE: A chemical produced by gut bacteria may accelerate Alzheimer’s disease

A byproduct produced by certain gut bacteria may directly accelerate the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Elevated blood levels of this molecule, known as imidazole propionate, correlate with worse cognitive decline in humans and actively drive neurodegeneration in animal models. The findings were published in Nature Communications.
The human digestive tract contains trillions of bacteria that help break down food. During this process, microbes release chemical byproducts into the bloodstream. These chemicals, called metabolites, travel throughout the body and influence the function of various organs, including the brain.
Imidazole propionate is a specific metabolite generated when gut bacteria break down histidine, an amino acid found in many common foods. Previous research linked elevated levels of this molecule to metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Because metabolic problems often increase the risk of developing dementia, researchers suspected the chemical might also affect brain health.
Researchers Vaibhav Vemuganti and Jea Woo Kang from the University of Wisconsin-Madison led the investigation alongside senior authors Barbara B. Bendlin and Federico E. Rey. They aimed to test whether imidazole propionate directly influences the biological pathways involved in cognitive aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
The team began by analyzing blood samples from nearly 1,200 older adults, most of whom had no diagnosed cognitive impairment. They measured the concentration of imidazole propionate in each participant’s blood and compared those levels against the participants’ scores on standardized memory and problem-solving tests. To isolate the effects of the chemical, the researchers adjusted their calculations for age, sex, body mass index, and the APOE gene, a known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.
People with the highest levels of the gut metabolite performed worse on cognitive tests at the start of the study. Over years of follow-up visits, these same individuals experienced an earlier and more rapid decline in memory and executive function compared to those with lower levels. Statistical models predicted that the cognitive performance of the high-metabolite group fell below that of the low-metabolite group roughly 15 to 18 years before the participants’ average age.
To look for underlying physical changes, the researchers measured molecular markers of Alzheimer’s disease in the participants’ blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Cerebrospinal fluid is the clear liquid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. High blood levels of imidazole propionate correlated with elevated amounts of tau tangles and neurofilament light chain, a structural protein that leaks out of damaged brain cells.
The researchers then analyzed the genetic material of gut bacteria from fecal samples provided by 294 participants. They specifically searched for a bacterial gene called urdA, which provides the biological instructions for making the enzyme that produces imidazole propionate. They identified this gene in several bacterial families, including certain strains of Streptococcus.
A higher abundance of bacteria carrying this gene was linked to lower cognitive scores and elevated Alzheimer’s biomarkers in the human participants. To investigate if this relationship is a direct cause and effect in humans, the team turned to large genetic databases. They used a statistical method that treats genetic inheritance like a randomized trial to evaluate whether naturally occurring biological traits lead to specific diseases.
The analysis revealed a specific genetic variant on chromosome 12 that causes some people to naturally accumulate higher levels of imidazole propionate in their blood. Carrying this genetic variant was associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting the metabolite actively promotes the condition rather than acting as a harmless bystander.
The researchers then conducted small studies using two different mouse models genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer’s-like brain changes. One model mimics the buildup of amyloid plaques, while the other mimics the accumulation of tau tangles. The researchers added imidazole propionate to the animals’ drinking water for several months.
In mice predisposed to accumulating amyloid plaques, a sticky protein fragment associated with Alzheimer’s, the treated animals developed more plaques in their brains than mice drinking regular water. In a second group of mice predisposed to tau tangles, the treatment caused severe inflammation and triggered the hyperactivity of star-shaped support cells called astrocytes. By analyzing the entire spectrum of proteins in the mouse brains, the researchers also detected elevated levels of proteins linked to structural breakdown in the nerve fibers.
Because the metabolite originates in the gut, it must travel through the blood to reach the brain. The researchers tested how the chemical affects the blood-brain barrier, a tightly packed layer of cells that lines brain blood vessels and protects neural tissue from circulating toxins.
They exposed human brain blood vessel cells to the metabolite in a laboratory setting. The molecule reduced the electrical resistance of the cell layer, indicating a breakdown in barrier integrity. In a separate test, the researchers injected a blue dye into the bloodstream of treated mice. The dye leaked extensively into the brain tissue, showing that the chemical damages blood vessels and allows substances to abnormally enter the brain.
In a final set of experiments, the team applied the metabolite directly to isolated mouse neurons grown in culture. They also added a chemical inhibitor that blocks an enzyme called GSK3-beta. This enzyme is known to abnormally attach phosphate molecules to tau proteins, causing them to tangle and destroy brain cells.
Exposure to the gut metabolite caused the cultured neurons to rapidly accumulate damaged tau proteins. Blocking the GSK3-beta enzyme completely reversed this effect, outlining the specific molecular pathway the gut chemical uses to damage brain cells.
While the human observational data points to a strong relationship, it cannot definitively prove that lowering imidazole propionate will prevent dementia. The animal experiments relied entirely on male mice given the chemical in their drinking water, which may not perfectly replicate how the metabolite is naturally produced and absorbed in the human digestive system.
Future studies will need to test female animals to determine if the biological effects differ by sex. Researchers will also need to explore whether specific dietary changes or targeted medications can safely reduce the production of this metabolite in the human gut.

Der Vormarsch faschistischer Parteien hat den demokratischen Konservatismus in eine existenzielle Krise gestürzt. Das trifft nicht nur Parteien wie die CDU. Die Krise trifft auch konservative Zeitungen wie die FAZ. Sie irrlichtert auf zunehmend rechtem Kurs.
Filterblasen sind keine Erfindung sozialer Medien. Als ich studierte, lasen alle um mich herum den taz-Vorläufer ID – Informationsdienst zur Verbreitung unterbliebener Nachrichten, die links, den Pflasterstrand und den Arbeiterkampf.
Ich mochte Filterblasen nicht. Als ich 1979 Außenreferent des AStAs der Uni Göttingen wurde, abonnierten wir die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Die FAZ galt uns als „Zentralorgan der Bourgeoisie“. Wir wollten wissen, was die „Bourgeoisie“ denkt. Dafür war die FAZ eine exzellente Quelle. Seitdem lese ich sie. Die FAZ liegt immer noch morgens in meinem Briefkasten. Die anderen Medien – außer der taz – gibt es so nicht mehr.
Die Qualität der FAZ war ihr solides journalistisches Handwerk. Das unterscheidet sie von rechten Kampagnenmedien wie Bild und Welt. Ihre klare politische Haltung stützt sie auf Fakten und Recherche. Gestärkt wurde die FAZ durch einen gepflegten Binnenpluralismus. Vereinfacht gesagt ist der Politikteil konservativ. Der Wirtschaftsteil ist überwiegend neoliberal. Im Feuilleton gab es dezidiert progressive Stimmen. Dieser Pluralismus steht unter Druck.
Der Vormarsch faschistischer Kräfte in vielen demokratischen Gesellschaften hat den Konservatismus in eine Krise gestürzt. Er ist über die Frage gespalten, ob Konservative beim Zugriff der antidemokratischen Rechten auf die Macht behilflich sein oder ihm widerstehen sollen.
Die Befürworter einer Kooperation der Konservativen mit Faschisten haben die Geschichte gegen sich. Die Zustimmung der Zentrumspartei zum Ermächtigungsgesetz war das Ende des deutschen Konservatismus und führte in die Nazidiktatur. Deshalb konzentrieren sich die Befürworter einer rechten Mehrheit unter Einschluss von Verfassungsfeinden auf ein einfaches Argument: Was links erlaubt sei, müsse auch rechts möglich sein.
Die aktuelle Kampagne gegen ein rot-grün-rotes Bündnis in Berlin dient dazu, die CDU mürbezumachen für eine Kooperation mit der AfD. Man schlägt die Linke und meint die CDU. Beim Leiter Innenpolitik der FAZ liest sich das so:
„Wenn an die Rhetorik, Taktik und Ideologie der Linkspartei dieselben Maßstäbe angelegt würden wie an den Extremismus in der AfD, dann müsste eine Verbotsdebatte geführt werden und müssten Politiker der Linkspartei so behandelt werden wie die am anderen Ende des Hufeisens. Doch weit gefehlt: Linkenpolitiker gehören zum Inventar der Morgenmagazine; Linkenpolitiker bestimmen, wer sich Demokrat nennen darf, wer nicht.“ (Jasper von Altenbockum, Paywall)
Nun ist nicht alles, was hinkt, schon ein Vergleich. Vergleiche sind dazu da, Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten festzustellen und nicht Ungleiches gleichzusetzen.
Es gibt keinen Landesverband der Linkspartei, der als verfassungsfeindlich eingestuft wird. Daran wird auch Gordon Schnieder markige Ankündigung nichts ändern. Es ist widerlegt, dass durch die Regierungsbeteiligung von Linken eine Gefahr für die freiheitlich demokratische Grundordnung entstand. Seit Jahren regieren sie in Bremen mit, wiederholt in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Unter Bodo Ramelow war Thüringen demokratisch mindestens so stabil wie heute unter Mario Voigt. Der 21. Deutsche Bundestag wurde vom Alterspräsidenten Gregor Gysi eröffnet, dem selbst Helmut Kohl nicht die demokratische Grundhaltung absprach.
Unzweifelhaft gehört die Linke zum pluralen Bogen demokratischer Parteien, die auf dem Boden des Grundgesetzes stehen. Sie ist darin eher das Pendant zur CDU. Beide haben lange Zeit an den politischen Rändern Kräfte demokratisch eingebunden. Die CDU zur Rechten, die Linkspartei wie die Grünen zur Linken.
Der Ratschlag der FAZ mit der Linkspartei keine Kooperationen einzugehen, ist auch nicht wirklich ernst gemeint. Würde er befolgt, wären Sachsen und Thüringen sofort unregierbar. Hier gibt es Minderheitsregierungen und Haushalte nur in Absprache mit Linken wie den Grünen. Wäre es ernst gemeint, könnte auch Manuela Schwesig nicht regieren. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern hätte Magdeburger Verhältnisse.
Offensichtlich will Altenbockum kein Kooperationsverbot mit der Linken. Er will, dass die Union mit der AfD kooperiert. Da trifft er sich mit Teilen der deutschen Wirtschaft und ihren Lobbyisten in der CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion. Deren wirtschaftsliberale Agenda kann nur in einer Kooperation mit den Antidemokraten der AfD, nicht aber in lagerübergreifenden Koalitionen umgesetzt werden.
Wer nun dachte, dass dieser Geschichtsvergessenheit im Feuilleton der FAZ widersprochen würde, hat die Rechnung ohne ihren Herausgeber Jürgen Kaube gemacht. Kaube hat aus seiner Verachtung für Berlin nie einen Hehl gemacht. Er spricht der Stadt ab, Hauptstadt zu sein. (Paywall)
Aber anders als Altenbockum gesteht er der Elif Eralp gewunden zu, dass sie einen Regierungsauftrag hat:
„Berlin hat Eralp in den Wahlen eine Art von Regierungsauftrag verschafft, Berlin hat verdient, dass er wahrgenommen wird. Das ist Demokratie. Soll die Stadt mit ihr leben.“
nur um nach Vorwürfen zu Antisemitismus und Clanwirtschaft genau dies wieder infrage zu stellen.
„Mit ihren Ambitionen, den Kampf der ‚Arbeiter:innenklasse‘ für den Sturz des kapitalistischen Systems durch unbegrenzten Zuzug von Migranten nach Berlin mit Wählern zu versorgen …Bloß sagen, man habe es vorher nicht gewusst, kann danach niemand.“ (Paywall)
Das hätte Gunnar Schupelius, früher Bild jetzt Nius, nicht rechter ausdrücken können. Die AfD-Erzählung, die Linke betreibe im Zusammenwirken mit Grünen und SPD die Zuwanderung von Migranten, um sich Mehrheiten zu verschaffen, bedient das Ideologem des „Bevölkerungsaustauschs“.
Kaube zeigt, wie weit die Krise der Konservativen reicht. Inzwischen machen sich Konservative zentrale Narrative von rechtsaußen zu eigen. Die Rede vom „Bevölkerungsaustausch“ teilt die AfD mit Trump und JD Vance. Sie stand am Anfang der Entwicklung, die aus einem ehemaligen Präsidenten des Verfassungsschutzes ein Beobachtungsobjekt seines alten Dienstes machte.
Wenn der Herausgeber des Feuilletons der FAZ auf dem Niveau von Hans-Georg Maaßen gelandet ist, müssen wir uns Sorgen machen. Wenn die FAZ weiterhin für die Stimmung in der „Bourgeoisie“ steht, dann sind in Teilen des rechten Bürgertums inzwischen antidemokratische Narrative fest verankert.
Wenn es aber nur die FAZ ist, wäre es schade. 1979 hatten wir im AStA-Außenreferat noch eine weitere konservative Zeitung abonniert. Wegen ihrer exzellenten internationalen Berichterstattung las ich jeden Tag die Neue Züricher Zeitung. Die NZZ hat inzwischen unter ihrem Chefredaktor Eric Gujer einen so scharfen Rechtskurs eingeschlagen, dass sie heute von vielen AfDlern als Hauspostille angesehen wird. Es wäre bitter, wenn die NZZ zur Zukunft der FAZ würde.

Hello, I'm currently looking for a FOSS program or script which could be used as an e-mail interface to a shared CalDav calendar.
My idea is:
- the program listen to a mailbox or regularly queries it
- users can send instructions by email like query the current reservations state or book/cancel a reservation
- the software obey the instructions
It would be simple enough for non digital literate people and would be light in a #slowcomputing way

🇨🇵 Bon, comme je le pensais, je n’ai pas fait tout le parcours du fait du trajet de retour mais c’était la foule des grands jours et ça fait plaisir à voir. On parlait de 100.000 personnes présentes et de nombreuses autres qui n’ont pu monter dans les trains à Ottignies et à Gent notamment. Deux photos de l’ambiance.
