  1. Moor Mother w/ Aquiles Navarro & Olof Melander + James McClure & Joao Guerra

OCCII, Thursday, June 4 at 08:30 PM GMT+2

SPACEIS THE PLACE:: “Moor Mother live at OCCII” Moor Mother w/ Aquiles Navarro & Olof Melander + James McClure / Joao Guerra Duo

Surprise gig! Moor Mother plays live at OCCII (Amsterdam), backed up by her musical soulmates Aquiles Navarro and Olof Melander! Expect the unexpected: new work, improv, and a selection from Moor Mother’s rich oeuvre.

Opening: James McClure & João Guerra

Vocalist and poet Camae Ayewa aka Moor Mother describes her music as “low fi/dark rap/blk girl blues/witch rap/coffee shop riot gurl songs/black ghost songs”. Her vast discography meanders adventurously between jazz, hip hop, and noise, with records under her own name, under the moniker 700 Bliss (with DJ Haram), or in collaborations with Irreversible Entanglements, the avant-metal band SUMAC, and many more.

“Moor Mother might be the most radical Afrofuturist artist to emerge for years” – The Wire

    https://moormother.bandcamp.com/

Recently, Moor Mother has moved toward a more melodic and song-oriented approach, while still blending spoken word, experimental jazz, electronics, and radical poetry. Her album Jazz Codes (2023) draws from her poetry project and pays tribute to jazz visionaries such as Woody Shaw and Mary Lou Williams, combining layered vocals, atmospheric production, and free-form improvisation in collaboration with Swedish producer Olof Melander. On her latest full length album The Great Bailout (2024), she expands this cinematic and haunting sound into a powerful meditation on colonial history, displacement, and collective memory, moving between tenderness, noise, jazz abstraction, and poetic storytelling.

Internationally renowned trumpeter Aquiles Navarro — also her bandmate in Irreversible Entanglements and multi-faceted artist in his own right— contributed to Jazz Codes as well as Circuit City and Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes, and later collaborated with Melander on the album Tangles (2024).

  3. This is a beautiful, relaxing stroll along the East Fork of the Jemez River, perfect area to look for wildflowers from June - September. The stream flows in a rocky canyon (popular with rock climbers) in a deep conifer forest. The stream meanders through a series of open meadows. The trail goes for about 2 miles before climbing out of the canyon in a series of switchbacks.

  4. Good Morning #Canada
The Severn River, #19 on our #CanadaRivers countdown, flows for 982 km, from Deer Lake near Kenora to Fort Severn on the shore of Hudson's Bay. It's the same length as the Albany River (next on our list) and both are the longest rivers entirely within Ontario. The Severn River drainage basin area is 102,800 km2 , a small portion of which is in Manitoba, and it has a modest volume of 645 m3/s as it meanders northeast. Historical records state that the mouth of the river was located by the English in 1631, but I'm pretty sure Indigenous people discovered it a few thousand years before that. Fort Severn was established as a trading post in 1689 by the Hudson's Bay Company but was captured by Pierre le Moyne, sieur d'Iberville in 1690. The post, rebuilt in 1759, has been in continuous operation to this day making this community one of the oldest European settlements in Ontario.

  9. American Gods : Land and Egregores

"American Gods (Neil Gaiman, 2001) is, among other things, a layered examination of the role of mythologies, religion, national identities, and some underlying “American-ness” that bends them all into something new. By necessity this meanders a bit (I'm not going to get into Gaiman's failings as a human being much) but it gives us a lot to think about."

  15. Most of the rivers on the North Georgia Plain (the relatively flat part of the east side of the Island, between the Malahat in the south and the Sayward Valley in the north) run fast and cold from the mountains to the Salish Sea (fka the Georgia Straight). The Tsolum, however, meanders. This means that it’s a place for early season swimming as the water, slowed, is even warmed by late spring & early fall sun.
Over the millennia the Tsolum has wandered across its part of the plain, moving soils, exposing gravel bars, helping to create one of the few places on the plain with agricultural opportunity. On its banks the forest is primarily deciduous and short-lived. Fast-growing Black Cottonwood. Red Alder. Broadleaf Maple. In places less disturbed by the river’s wandering, older & longer-lived trees. Garry Oaks & Douglas Firs. And always, closer to the river & its courses, & because of deep alluvial soils, Sitka Spruce & Grand Fir.

    [!!CW!! Synopsis & non-spoilery review.]

A sr. editor at a monthly housing magazine runs into trouble when the new CEO turns out to be her new landlord. The potential of a story about what it means to have & make a home is unfortunately squandered. The storyline meanders & never finds a good, solid direction.

The cast is marvelous (great guest roles too) & carries the show - a cliched, tropeful story with a self-made, rich, cold boss & a poor, struggling jr. involved in a love triangle, & the worst noble idiocy & time-break/leap I've seen so far.

If you like architecture & seeing a variety of homes (some from other dramas), & appreciate the actors, it's a fun, often silly, kind of sweet watch through eps 15. Just stop there, & it'll be good. The writer went off the rails in the last episode & there's just no redemption possible.
