No, I don‘t want to subscribe to the #Herald ! I want to read one article. Charge me 5£ for it and I‘ll pay. But what am I am going to with a #subscription? What‘s wrong with the #press and their #paywalls? It used to be possible to buy one paper newspaper without ordering it for the whole year? Why can‘t this be done digitally. Merde.

Decompressing at the airport while waiting for my flight home from #teardown2024. It was an absolutely wonderful weekend. Well paced, with great conversations, presentations, social gatherings and exhibitions. Kudos to @crowdsupply and in particular @helenleigh for talking the time to consider the innumerable details that went into making it a welcoming and engaging event. While waiting for my flight, I'm going to try to post some new (non-chronological) images from the weekend.

"What do you mean you don't want your data, messages, and Internet usage monitored? Don't you care about the children?!"
This is one of the arguments that the #US and #EU are using right now to attempt to sway public opinion against encryption. They're calling tech/web organizations' resistance to government backdoors "hypocracy," because some companies have complied with repressive governments.
"But why not with *our* governments?!"
The usual Helen Lovejoy argument is being used to justify more snooping.
Here's a sample of how they're spinning things, written in the minutes of the EU-US Senior Officials Meeting on Justice an Home Affairs:
16-17 March, 2023
"A point of reference in this
regard is the 2021 G7 Statement which speaks of ‘maintaining tightly controlled lawful access to
data’; indeed, law enforcement is not seeking new powers but to preserve its ability to investigate.""On end-to-end encryption, the US delegation noted a certain hypocrisy in the position of web
platforms that resisted constructive engagement on lawful access with liberal democracies, while being liable to bow to pressure in more repressive jurisdictions.""Beyond encryption, data retention
and data processing were also identified as areas of focus by the US delegation. It confirmed that
the fight against online child exploitation and abuse remained a national priority."Full document for context: https://www.statewatch.org/media/3804/eu-usa-som-jha-meeting-outcome-7725-23.pdf

Winterbrew Flexi Hexi Longline Cardi by Melu Crochet
Wrap yourself in warmth with The Winterbrew Cardigan: a cozy, hexagon-based crochet pattern made with Tea Time aran weight yarn. Designed for chilly days and tea-filled afternoons, it features soft vertical stripes from colour-changing yarn, and a thick, squishy texture perfect for winter layering. With multiple sizes and lengths, this cardigan is as comforting and customisable as your favourite brew.
This design puts a fresh twist on the classic hexi cardi, starting with an elongated hexagon so you can crochet both halves continuously—no extra rows needed!
starting with an elongated hexagonThis makes it much easier to work with colour-changing yarn while keeping a sleek, streamlined look, with no horizontal lines across the bottom.
The pattern includes 11 lengths and five sizes, so you can create the perfect fit for yourself!
Materials
Yarn: 2-8 cakes (depending on chosen size) Hobbii Tea Time yarn (200 g (7.05 oz), 580 m (634.3 yds) in each cake) this is an Aran/Medium (Size 4) 100% Acrylic
I used Tea Time yarn by HobbiiStitch markers I find it much easier to use different colours as these are used in the pattern to show the corners I am working on

“Here we get into very deep metaphysical difficulties, but that cannot be helped, for the Master of the Temple knows that any statement, however simple, involves metaphysical difficulties which are not only difficult, but insoluble. On the plane of which Reason is Lord, all antinomies are irreconcilable. It is impossible for any one below the grade of Magister Templi even to begin to comprehend the resolution of them.”

Bugreporting on anticipatory Infra-solutionism: collective practices of struggle and resistance.
In this paper we outline a disobedient action research approach in which we as 'The Institute for Technology in the Public Interest' (TITiPI) work on ways to collectively articulate community concerns on anticipatory infra-solutionism for the digital and green transition.
As part of the Future Work Panel -
Futures have been at the centre of STS work from its inception and have since flourished conceptually and methodologically. In this panel we seek to explore ‘futuring’ through futures thinking, digital futures, future histories, the futures of STS itself, and experiments with futures work.

#OnThisDay in 1895, Adela Breton and Pablo Solorio arrived in Liverpool having caught a boat from Canada. They were heading to Adela's home in Bath to study and catologue pre-Columbian Mexican artefacts.
There is a full chapter on Adela in the junior edition of Unsung Women in Somerset and she features in the standard edition as well as On This Day in Somerset.

On this day in 1866...
❤️ Mumu passed away at the Bath Institution for the Blind and Deaf.
🇸🇱 Born in Sierra Leone, Mumu’s real name is unknown. As a young child, she was kidnapped by slavers and put on board a slave ship.
⚓️ The ship was then rescued by the West Africa Squadron.
🇬🇧 When she was about 11, she was invited to study at the Bath Institution, where she thrived. For more, see my books on Somerset.
