El contraste entre Europa y China ya es incómodo, pero se vuelve directamente humillante cuando América entra en la ecuación.
Si la cuerda de cáñamo europea parecía una pesadilla higiénica, lo que los conquistadores españoles encontraron al llegar a ciudades como Tenochtitlán fue un choque cultural… al revés.
Los llamados “salvajes” vivían en ciudades infinitamente más limpias que Madrid, París o Londres.En pleno siglo XVI, mientras en Europa era normal vaciar bacinicas por la ventana al grito de “¡agua va!”, el Imperio azteca había desarrollado un sistema de higiene urbana que hoy llamaríamos ejemplar.
Tenochtitlán contaba con letrinas públicas en calles principales y mercados.
La orina no se consideraba un desecho inútil: se recogía en vasijas y se utilizaba como mordiente para fijar tintes textiles.
Los excrementos se transportaban en barcazas que recorrían los canales y acababan fertilizando las chinampas, los huertos flotantes que alimentaban a la ciudad. Nada se desperdiciaba.
Con unos 200.000 habitantes, la ciudad estaba más limpia que cualquier capital europea contemporánea.La higiene personal también marcaba una diferencia brutal.
Moctezuma II se bañaba dos veces al día.
Para los españoles, que asociaban el baño frecuente con prácticas paganas o con la pérdida de fuerza vital, aquello era escandaloso.
El choque fue mutuo: los aztecas no soportaban el olor de los europeos, que pasaban semanas o meses sin lavarse, vestidos con lana y cuero en clima tropical.
Hay crónicas que relatan cómo los indígenas sahumaban a los españoles con incienso antes de hablar con ellos.En América no se usaba papel higiénico como en China, pero la naturaleza ofrecía alternativas muy superiores a la cuerda medieval.
Plantas como el amole o xiuhmaolli, ricas en saponinas, se utilizaban como jabón natural al contacto con el agua.
Para el aseo posterior se empleaban hojas suaves —maíz u otras plantas de follaje terso— y, sobre todo, agua.
El baño no era un lujo, era una costumbre diaria ligada a la salud.El Temazcal, lejos de ser solo un ritual espiritual, era una auténtica tecnología médica.
Este baño de vapor, construido en piedra, funcionaba mediante piedras volcánicas calientes sobre las que se vertían infusiones de hierbas.
El calor elevaba la temperatura corporal provocando una hipertermia controlada, similar a una fiebre inducida.
Esto activaba el sistema inmunológico, aceleraba la producción de glóbulos blancos y ayudaba a combatir infecciones antes de que se volvieran graves.
Mientras un noble europeo acumulaba suciedad bajo capas de seda, el habitante mesoamericano expulsaba toxinas a través del sudor.Además, el vapor no era neutro.
Se empleaban plantas medicinales como pericón y cempasúchil para infecciones digestivas y respiratorias, o copal y eucalipto como potentes antisépticos.
Al inhalar el vapor, los aceites esenciales entraban directamente por los pulmones, limpiando las vías respiratorias.
No había agua estancada ni esponjas compartidas: todo fluía.La higiene obstétrica es otro punto demoledor.
En Europa, la fiebre puerperal mataba a miles de mujeres tras el parto debido a la suciedad y a la falta de asepsia.
En Mesoamérica, el Temazcal era obligatorio para las madres recientes.
El calor ayudaba a la contracción del útero, a la expulsión de restos y a prevenir infecciones internas.
Era una práctica estándar que reducía drásticamente la mortalidad materna.Los incas, por su parte, llevaron la higiene al terreno de la ingeniería. Ciudades como Machu Picchu cuentan con sistemas de canalización y drenaje tan precisos que evitaban la acumulación de residuos cerca de viviendas y templos.
La élite utilizaba finas telas de lana de vicuña para su aseo personal, que luego se desechaban o quemaban, evitando la reutilización bacteriana tan común en Europa y Roma.SIGUE ↘️

Excerpt: "The evidence shows that from around the year 1100, during a period of global warming known as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly, Andean communities moved higher up into the mountains. They built terraces, irrigated slopes, and planted trees such as alder to make the soil more fertile and provide wood.
"Llamas and their cousins, alpacas, were vital as they were hardy, light-footed, and supplied wool, fuel and fertilizer. Their communal dung heaps even show up in the lake sediments, revealed by spikes in fossils of certain dung-eating mites that thrived when llama caravans were pastured nearby.
"Together, these practices stabilized soils, reduced erosion, and allowed large populations to thrive in the Andes."

"When the Spanish arrived in the 1530s, this balance was upended. New livestock—cattle, sheep and goats—trampled vegetation and eroded soils. Their free-ranging herds left waste across the landscape, unlike llamas and their easily-collectible dung.
"At the same time, the Spaniards cut down forests for timber and charcoal, in contrast to the Inca who had imposed harsh penalties to protect their woodland resources. The 17th century Spanish pastor and chronicler, Bernabé Cobo, remarked that a Spanish household used as much fuel in one day as a native household would in an entire month.
"The lake sediments record the ecological damage of the era: excess nutrients from dung, more erosion, and a collapse of the Inca's sustainable land management."
