Opinion: The Invisible Powerhouse – Why The Herald’s Culture 50 Has An Interactive Blind Spot
This is a fantastic list. Truly. As I read through The Herald’s 50 most powerful people in Scottish arts and culture (Paywall), I see names that represent the very best of our nation – musicians, producers, actors, and advocates who have fought to keep Scotland’s creative heart beating during some of the toughest years in recent memory. I recognise many of them as allies. I respect all of them as peers.
But I also noticed something else. Or rather, I noticed a void.
In a list of 50 powerbrokers shaping what Scotland consumes in theatres, galleries, and concert halls, there is not a single representative from the Scottish games ecosystem. Not one. In 2026, as our world becomes increasingly defined by digital interaction, the country’s largest, most successful, and most productive creative export has been missed entirely.
The Billion-Pound Ghost
This is not a new phenomenon, but it is one that we can no longer afford to ignore. For decades now, the games industry has been the billion-pound ghost in the room of Scottish culture. We are frequently cited for our extraordinary GVA and our global commercial reach, but we are almost never invited to the table when the conversation turns to artistic merit or cultural impact.
By excluding (ignoring? Missing?) games from a list of the most powerful people in culture, we are essentially saying that the millions of people who engage with interactive storytelling, virtual performance, and digital art are not engaging in culture. We are saying that the world-class designers in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Elgin – people who are masterminds of empathy, systems, storytelling and aesthetics – are somehow separate from the creative fabric of the nation.
Beyond the Bottom Line
While the economic argument for games is inarguable – as I have highlighted in the Level Up Scotland Games Action Plan – my challenge to the wider arts sector is to look beyond the balance sheet.
Games are the golden thread of the 21st-century creative economy. They are where music, narrative, visual art, and technical engineering collide to create entirely new forms of human experience. When we talk about the power of the arts to transform lives, why are we not talking about the therapeutic impact of the Gamer-in-Residence at Glasgow Children’s Hospital? When we talk about cultural legacy, why is the ongoing lack of preservation of our digital heritage still treated as an optional extra?
The isolation of games is a uniquely Scottish problem in one specific, structural way. In the rest of the UK, games are tucked under the wing of the screen industries. In Scotland, we are one of the 16 official sub-sectors of the creative industries – standing alongside architecture, design, and visual art. On paper, we are integrated. In practice, we are siloed. In policy terms, we are entirely invisible.
A Hand Across the Aisle
I am not writing this to complain; I am writing this to offer outreach. The ongoing exclusion of games is a missed opportunity for the traditional arts. Imagine the cultural impact of a collaboration between the Citizens Theatre, or Dance Base and a real-time 3D studio, or the RSNO performing alongside a live interactive performance. These are the opportunities that stay locked away when our worlds remain apart.
At the Scottish Games Network, we are working to bridge this gap. Following our More Than Games events in 2022-25, we are preparing to launch Project Pathfinder. This initiative is specifically designed to bring games technology into the wider creative and cultural sectors, acting as a force multiplier for artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers and performers.
The Wake-Up Call
To my friends and colleagues in the traditional arts: consider this a friendly wake-up call. The next generation of Scottish creators does not see a boundary between a play and a game, or a gallery and a virtual world. They see a single, fluid creative landscape and open opportunities.
If we want a Culture 50 that truly reflects the power and influence of Scottish creativity, we have to start looking at the digital screen with the same respect we give to the stage, the cinema screen or the canvas.
SGN is here to facilitate that conversation. I am here to be the architect of that bridge. Let us make sure that by 2027, the 50 most powerful people in Scottish arts and culture include the pioneers who are building the interactive future of our nation.

Meine Bitte an @c3voc wäre es die Heralds bis auf Q&A und Sondersituationen komplett zu schneiden.
Zusammenfassend:
* Weniger ist mehr. Viel weniger ist viel mehr.
* Auf Meetups etc üben, nicht gleich auf großer Bühne.
* Im Hintergrund bleiben, helfen, und die Zahnräder ölen.
* Die Audience hatte Spaß und weiß nicht mal genau warum.Wenn sich keine(r) so wirklich an euch erinnert habt ihr es gut gemacht.

Besonders schlimm für Speaker: Wenn eine Person "more of a comment than a question" hat.
Als Speaker kannst du da schlecht reingrätschen weil es einfach schlecht aussieht.
Als MC/Herald? Da geht's. Die "fragende" Person nach spätestens 2-3 Sätzen abbrechen. Je nach Situation noch eine Chance wirklich zu fragen oder das Wort sofort an die nächste Person/Mikro weitergeben. Wie oben: wenn die Person nen Vortrag halten will, dann beim nächsten Mal selbst was einreichen.

4. Es ist eure Aufgabe Speaker zu schützen. Wenn die Zuhörenden zu laut sind, wenn wer reinruft, wenn was komplett kaputtgeht und Speaker kurz davor sind die Nerven zu verlieren, wenn Speaker Wasser oder ein Hustengutti brauchen, wenn während Q&A die Leute zu laut sind: tu wat.

3. Wenn ihr Englisch nicht wirklich ehrlich near native(!!!) aussprechen könnt, dann lasst es. Es macht euch nicht zu einer schlechten Person wenn ihr Englisch nicht wirklich ehrlich gut könnt. Es macht euch aber halt auch nicht für diese eine spezifische Aufgabe qualifiziert.

Ausnahme: Persönliche Freunde und berühmte Personen auf der Bühne sind natürlich schon an sich interessant.

2. Speaker sind dem Publikum egal. Im positiven wie im negativen Sinn. Das Publikum will den Content, will gut unterhalten werden, Ende.
Positiv: Es ist dem Publikum wirklich ehrlich egal wer da steht und ob mal was schief geht solang es gute Informationen sind und/oder Spaß macht.
Negativ: Die haben Speaker maximal 10-30 Sekunden zu sagen wer sie sind etc weil es danach langweilt. Am Besten sind 0 Sekunden.All das gilt doppelt und dreifach und vierfach für Heralds.

1f. Generell wollt ihr einen familären und freundschaftlichen Ton setzen und damit die Zuschauenden beeinflussen ohne, dass sie es wirklich mitbekommen. Ist schwer. Weiß ich..
Ausnahme: Wenn ihr ein professionell vorbereitetes(!) und abgestimmtes(!) Bühnenprogramm als MC habt dann zieht das durch. Das merkt ihr aber allein schon daran, dass ihr mindestens eine Woche vorher intensiv drüber nachdenkt, abstimmt, Leute das aktiv einfordern, das mit euch besprechen, etc.

1c. Wollen Speaker eine spezielle Ansage: Machen. Aber nicht mehr als 2-5 Sätze
1d. Nie nie niemals nicht einfach Abstract vorlesen, noch groß editorialisieren, eigene Interpretation warum das jetzt ein guter Talk ist, oder Höflichkeitsfloskeln. Wenn ihr das _wirklich_ wollt reicht selbst nen Talk ein.
1e. Falls was mit der Technik nicht klappt: Helfen und/oder Publikum interessiert halten. Die Leute woll'n, dass was passiert(TM) -
1a. Die Funktion von Heralds ist Herdenlenkung: Nochmal Sitzplätze defragmentieren, Announcments bekanntgeben, und dann klar zeigen, dass es jetzt losgeht. Name, Titel, round of applause anstossen während ihr weggeht, und los
1b. Speaker-Namen solltet ihr 100% korrekt aussprechen. Speaker fünf Minuten vorher treffen, kurz abklären, dass ihr den Namen 100% richtig aussprecht, und gut -
Da es im Chaos-Umfeld so viele Heralds trotzdem machen ist das ein bisschen ein Selbstläufer. Wenn es ein Herald nicht macht fällt das einer Person die Inspiration für eigenes heralding sucht halt einfach weniger auf.
Sprich: Um Änderung zu bewirken müsste das wirklich aktiv angegangen werden, ansonsten wird die Masseträgheit das einfach weiter schleifen.

Aaaaalso:
1. Es war insbesondere im akademischen Umfeld früher durchaus Usus längere Einführungen zu geben. Das waren oft Leute die sich mindestens(!) so gut mit der besprochenen Materie auskennen wie die Speaker. Im Business/Marketing-Umfeld ist das mit den langen Einführungen immer noch so. Das sind dann allerdings ~immer Leute die das professionell machen. Beides ist im Chaos-Umfeld.. eher selten.. und damit so antiquiert wie unnötig. -
2. Warum meine ich Ahnung zum Thema zu haben? Ich organisiere seit Ewigkeiten Konferenzen (von Meetups bis FOSDEM), gebe viele Talks (https://github.com/RichiH/talks), und bin sehr oft selbst MC/Herald.
2a. Mit meinen Prometheus, Grafana, CNCF, etc und früher auch anderen Hüten bin ich oft die Person im Hintergrund die die Speaker trainiert, Slides poliert, bei CfPs hilft, etc pp. -
Nachdem ich jetzt Zeit hatte ein paar #38c3 Talks anzusehen möchte ich im Sinne von #tuwat ein paar hoffentlich konstruktive Punkte zur #Herald #Angel Diskussion beitragen. Im Zweifelsfall gerne ignorieren.
Vorneweg:
1. Die Kritik ist systemisch und explizit _nicht_ an Einzelpersonen gerichtet. Vorschläge diskutiere und erläutere ich, bei aktiv kommuniziertem Bedarf, allerdings sehr gerne auch mit Einzelpersonen. Wenn's hilft auch in persona, beim #39c3, oder wie auch immer.1/n
