AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup – January 2026
Introduction
Hi, and welcome to the first AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup in 2026! Thank you for visiting my blog. 🙂
I’ve implemented a few changes thanks to suggestions from readers. The most important one this time comes from Erikorh in the Amigans channel on Discord. He suggested headlines for each news item. I thought that was a great idea, so in this roundup I’ve given this a try. I hope this will make the text easier to navigate than previously. Thanks Erikorh!
If you have feedback of any kind concerning these roundups, please contact me through the Amigans forum or on the Amigans Discord. 🙂
Now, let us dive into the news.
Software News
Hollywood 11: Coderise
The biggest news in January was probably the release of Hollywood 11: Coderise. Here is the official press release from Airsoft Softwair.
Hollywood 11: Coderise is a massive update with lots of new features, optimizations and bug fixes. The most important new feature is that Hollywood 11 finally introduces a modular build system which will only link the libraries actually required by a script to the compiled program. This can drastically reduce executable sizes and is especially important on Amiga systems where memory is often limited. Hollywood 11 finally makes it possible to compile programs that fit on a single 880kb disk and run on a vanilla A1200! The new modular build system is made possible by a brand-new subsystem called Miniwood which, in contrast to Hollywood, allows scripts to only link the libraries actually required by the script to the output executable. Using Miniwood doesn’t only have advantages for Amiga users but also for users of other platforms: For example, if scripts don’t decide to load the display library, the program will also work on systems without X11, e.g. on pure terminal servers which was previously impossible.
Of course, the introduction of Miniwood isn’t the only new feature in Hollywood 11. There are many other exciting new things in Hollywood 11. Here are just a few of them:
- introduction of Miniwood to massively reduce executable sizes
- sound stream export is now possible
- lots of new AmigaOS 3.2 features now supported
- new AmigaOS-specific extensions like backdrop windows
- support for the Linux arm64 platform
- several improvements concerning layer grouping
- audio recording support in different formats
- samples can be extracted from music streams
- optimized for Hollywood Designer 7
- much more convenient capture of console output
- much more effective compressor for smaller executables
- lower memory consumption (important on classic AmigaOS)
- tray menu support
- monolithic compilation now supported for macOS arm64 systems
- console mode supported on macOS as well now
- GDK support on Linux
- great enhancements for Android (scoped storage and MediaStore support)
- implemented several new plugin interfaces
- ready for at least 3 new Hollywood 11-exclusive plugins
- over 100 new pages of PDF documentation, 1380 pages altogether!
- lots of other changes, optimizations and bug fixes
Hollywood 11 is the ultimate Multimedia experience and a must-have for all creative people. Hollywood is available on CD and as a download version. Both versions include Hollywood for all supported platforms. Buying Hollywood gets you a single-user license for all 17 platforms supported by Hollywood. If you already own Hollywood, you can buy a discounted upgrade version.
Hollywood is the ultimate bridge between all the different AmigaOS compatible platforms and the other three modern desktop systems, Windows, macOS, and Linux! Additionally, Hollywood also supports the Android and iOS platforms. A truly unique feature is the ability to cross-compile native executables for many different platforms including: AmigaOS3, AmigaOS4, WarpOS, MorphOS, AROS (x86), Windows (x86, x64), macOS (x86, x64, arm64, ppc), Linux (x86, x64, ppc, arm, arm64), and Android/iOS with optionally available add-ons. You don’t even have to own these platforms in order to compile executables for them. It’s enough to run Hollywood on one of the supported platforms and then compile programs for all the others! Only Hollywood makes it possible. If you want to learn more about Hollywood, please visit the the official Hollywood portal which also has a forum for all questions concerning Hollywood.
All this makes Hollywood The Cross-Platform Multimedia Application Layer. Join the Multimedia revolution and get your personal copy of Hollywood 11: Coderise now!
This release was brought to you by Airsoft Softwair – the hardest working men in code business.

Abuse 2025 SDL2
The port of Abuse 2025 SDL 2 has been released by HunoPPC and AOS4 fans from Mars.
“Abuse is a great side-scrolling action game that uses a unique system to control your character. You use the keyboard to move around and the mouse to aim your gun. It works pretty well, and the game can be great fun to play, since it has nicely done graphics and sound effects, as well as many non-linear levels and powerups.”

Ubek
Version 1.1.2 of the first person shooter Ubek became available on OS4Depot on January 6th. There, we can read the following:
“Ubek is a remake of a commercial fps game released for classic Amiga in 1995 by Twink Spark Soft. The main idea behind the remake is to make it convenient and pleasing to play on modern systems, while preserving 100% of the original graphics, puzzles and story.
The main programmer, author of the original and remake is Szymon Ulatowski, Marek “Smakrusg” Glogowski helped in porting the game to AmigaOS 4. In addition, musicians Albert Czochara and Remigiusz Kolasa also contributed to the sound design of the Ubek. The game’s beta tester was Rafal Chyla, who also created the icons and helped prepare the documentation.”
Features of the new version include:
- Modern high resolution, 60 fps
- 3D hardware acceleration (using GL4ES)
- Graphics improvements, including a better look for weapons or hero characters (you can switch to classic mode, which looks like the 1995 original)
- New extended music setting and better sfx effects
- Control enhancements – keyboard plus mouse or optional (tooltype option) gamepad using analog knobs
- The location of the level exit is visible on the radar
- Improvements in better weapon range and effectiveness
- Hitting enemies partially visible around corners is now allowed (in the old version, if the center of an enemy’s body was obscured by a wall, he was completely immune to hits).
- Added safeguards against accidental destruction of critical objects (e.g., keys) needed to complete a level.
- Added option to quickly save and load
- Many other minor fixes and improvements to make gameplay easier and the game better in general
The final version is now out. Here is the changelog for the release since 1.1.2:

RNOEffects
Version 2.1 of the brilliant RNOEffects by jPV^RNO has been released. 🙂
RNOEffects is an image processing program with a focus on good batch conversion options and alpha channel-based effects.
It runs on AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AmigaOS 3 (68K/WOS), and AROS.
Version 2.1 includes the following changes:
- Added a new view mode to display images at their actual resolution in a
scrollable window area - Graphical displays are hidden during window resizing, which improves speed
and flexibility on systems that resize windows with full contents - Added the “Palette editor” tool for modifying, setting, or removing palettes
- Whole directories can be added into the batch conversion list with the Add
button or just drag’n’drop from OS windows - Batch resizing can keep the aspect ratio of an original image
- Added an option to disable redrawing during a batch conversion to speed up
the process on lower end setups - Added a progress gauge in the batch conversion window
- Zoom level can be changed in the Pixel Editor
- Pixels can’t be drawn “out-of-bounds” in the Pixel Editor window
- Palette images are converted to RGB images only when needed or requested
- Added a setting to reload saved images back into the editor to reflect
changes caused by any image conversion process during saving - Added an option to convert RGB images to palette images with Quantize effect
- Window title indicates if an image is an (A)RGB or Palette image
- Almost all effects work with palette images now, though some options may not
work exactly as with RGB images - The Clear option detects the image colour format
- The Color Picker tool shows the palette pen alongside the RGB values
- Brush and text drawing can be locked to borders/corners/centre, which makes
it easier to add watermarks, etc. to varying image dimensions - Setting co-ordinates for the Draw effect by mouse over the image can be
constrained vertically or horizontally by pressing Shift or Ctrl keys - The “j” key swaps main and buffer images (as used in DPaint and PPaint)
- Added presets for Amiga WB 1.x, 2.x, Rebel, and PeterK/IconLib palettes
- Added presets for resolutions on Resize and Crop windows, the last applied
resolution is shown as the first item in the preset list - Width and height values can be swapped in Resize and Crop windows
- A cropped image can be copied to the internal buffer instead of applying the
effect to the current image - Buffer changes are refreshed on effects that use the buffer image
- Color Picker and Area Selector tools broke some effects like elliptical crop
- Transparency level can be set on the Background effect
- Improved error handling
- Other minor fixes and changes

My Personal Best Games of 2025
For me, it has been a really good year when it comes to discovering new games! I looked at the games that I got in 2025 which are not necessarily games released in 2025 – but as it turns out, when checking for the release dates, all of them actually are from 2025!
I did not realize how many of these games are in Early Access. I guess it is a lot more common with smaller or indie games and since this is what I usually prefer, it just happens. As usual my warning: When you think about buying a game in Early Access, do not base this decision on what the developers hope to deliver one day. Look at what is already in the game, what is playable. If you enjoy that, then it’s safe to buy, because you will have fun playing the game or will have had fun playing the game if development stops before the game gets released.
Special Mention: News Tower. I bought this game in 2024, I think. It officially and successfully left Early Access on November 18, 2025, though! This is a tycoon game about publishing a news paper while handling relations with the Mafia and politicians. It is set in the 1930s. The interesting part is that you build up your newspaper emporium in a narrow building which means you unlock floor after floor and expand vertically. It is a fun game, but I haven’t gotten too far yet. I know that you can even unlock photographers at some point, for example, but I haven’t had them yet. There is a free demo available, though. I love that the demos returned.
12. Hollywood Animal* (release date: April 10, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
You buy a Hollywood studio and produce films in the 1920s. There is a warning that the game will be… well, to be honest: Realistic. People aren’t treated well. It is rough. This game could easily be my number 2 – in theory. It ended up number 10 because it has some flaws that take away some fun for me. The building space is very limited and I ended up not being able to build something I needed during one playthrough. I know better now, hopefully. But what I do not like is that in order to earn enough money (which means producing decent films), you need to get your hands on good scripts. I am letting the script writers write script after script to get their skill up which is a lot of clicking – and throwing away scripts. It felt more like a clicker game. I also feel more like I need to have spreadsheets for good combinations (which movie genres are good in which combination and for which audience with which actors and roles). Because if I produce too many bad movies in a row, I will go bankrupt and have to start the game again. I haven’t given up hope that I will enjoy the game (again) one day, though, as in the beginning, before I was aware of the issues I’m having with it, I had a lot of fun and I like the atmosphere and the setting.
11. Tales of the Shire (release date: July 29, 2025 – officially released)
I wasn’t sure whether I should even list this game, but in the end, the cozy atmosphere won me over. If only it had more content. Basically, my opinion has not changed since I wrote about it here and despite planning to, I did not play much further yet. Still, I like the atmosphere they created. I do feel like a hobbit who moved into that small village. It just falls a bit short in some areas.
10. City Tales – Medieval Era (release date: May 22, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
This is a recent addition that I bought off GreenManGaming because it was on a really good sale there! This game looks like a city-builder, but it is more a puzzle game where you need to make sure that you have the right combination of service buildings within reach depending on what the inhabitants in a district want (a church, a theatre, etc.). The game is still fun, though, and I like playing this kind of city-builder once in a while. But as I just bought it and haven’t spent much time with it yet, I can’t place this game any higher on my list. I need to spend more time with it to really decide how good it is. There is a demo available for those interested.
9. The Precinct (release date: May 13, 2025 – officially released)
And one more lurking around near the end of my list simply because I haven’t played it much yet. You are a police officer in the 1980s. This is a game with a storyline and side missions but you can keep playing the side missions even when you’re done with the main story apparently. I quickly switched to a controller thinking I was a better car driver with that… No. I am not. But hey, even though my car was wracked, there are apparently no negative consequences and my car was magically fixed the next time I needed it. In other words: Driving with a controller is more fun, but yeah… Crashing into innocents since 1947 (the year that L. A. Noire takes place…)!
8. PolyPine (release date: March 31, 2025 – officially released)
Finally a game that scratches the “Equilinox” itch. This one is a side-scroller, though. Other than that, it plays very similar. It is basically a puzzle game. You place trees which can grow taller when there are not too many other trees nearby that steal too much sun. You also need berries, animals, fish, and so on. Everything depends on at least one other thing that they need nearby (animals need food, for example, so berries or grasses or… other animals). It can be a bit repetitive at times and it is not as nice to look at as Equilinox (because it is a side-scrolling game), but it is still fun to play and I like my puzzle games every once in a while.
7. Tavern Keeper (release date: November 3, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
Oh, how long have I been waiting for this game… years and years and… Thankfully, this game really did make it into Early Access and even successfully so! I really enjoy playing Tavern Keeper as it currently is and am curious what else they are going to add to the game. I am not sure how much micro management the game is going to have in the end and how much I like this part… mainly about the staff and how much rest they need and how to keep them happy but working. I do love the amount of customization you can do with the furniture pieces, though.
6. Let Them Trade (release date: July 24, 2025 – officially released)
This is such a cute game! You need to decide which settlements focus on which resources and… let them trade, as the title says. I wrote about the game after playing the demo back in June. My opinion has not changed and I still really like this game!
5. Erenshor (release date: April 14, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
Erenshor is a single-player MMO which means that you cannot play it with other people. But other players are simulated in this game. As far as I know, this game is made by one developer. I love that it gives me the MMO-feeling without having to actually interact with any annoying people! Grouping is really easy and nobody gets angry when I have to quit the group all of a sudden.
The game tries to simulate old MMOs like Everquest where you need to find quests yourself and talk to NPCs. But you can also change this – which I did – and have NPCs with quest markers, right-clicking for accepting quests, a mini map and all that fancy stuff.
I have caught myself more than once forgetting that the chat messages are not from other players or thinking to myself that I am not in the mood to play with other people and then remembering that it is a single player game! Apparently, these NPC players even “remember” if you treated them well (if a good item drops, they may ask for it if they can use it, for example). When you ask an NPC to group with you, they need to run to where you’re at first. This happens quite fast, but you still need to wait a bit for them to arrive.
It hurts a bit to have this gem on number 5. It could easily be higher on this list, even number one. The problem is just that there were so many good games this year and I really wanted to make a decision here.
4. Hotel Architect (release date: May 20, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
This is a typical tycoon management game where you build a hotel. Nothing more, nothing less. I would say it is a really easy game as I never had any trouble earning money to build everything I want or need. But it is fun to build the rooms and make sure that the visitors are happy. And I really enjoy just watching everybody do their job and the visitors coming in and leaving your hotel again. It is a game that I keep starting up when I want to relax in the evening which for me is always a sign for a good game.
3. Town to City (release date: September 16, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
The second game that I wrote about in June after playing the demo. I would not say that Town to City is a better game than Let Them Trade. It is just more cozy, relaxed and prettier to look at. What I especially love about the game is that you can decorate the houses. Depending on where you place flowers, they are hung on the wall, placed as balcony or potted flowers, etc. The game is not difficult to play at all and that is not its intention either. Town to City is a cozy city-builder, after all. When Hotel Architect is too “stressful” for me to play, I like to spend my evening in Town to City.
2. Teddy’s Haven (release date: May 6, 2025 – currently in Early Access)
Oh, how I love this game! It has a short-cut to get out of first person mode, thankfully, so I can play it. It basically only adds a little “whisp” that floats in front of your camera, but it is enough to stop my motion sickness from triggering. I like wandering through the world and as no in-game time passes during that time. You can look around without having to worry about anything. Once you think you collected enough ingredients, resources, etc., you can start the day and have customers enter your shop to buy what you collected, farmed or made. I already hired helpers that handle the restocking and the checkout counter for me, so I can even continue gathering goods during opening hours.
It takes quite some time to earn enough money to buy upgrades for the shop. But I still like playing it a lot. It is another cozy game in a way that no combat is required.
1. The Roottrees are Dead (release date: January 25, 2025 – officially released)
This year, I had no trouble choosing which game belongs on my number one. It may not be as cute to look at as some of the other games. It has no replay value – which is rare for me. But this game captivated me for days until I had finished it, both the main game as well as the additional case “Roottree Mania” (part of the released game). I did not play any other games until I was finished with this one. I thought about the game and which hints to go after next during the day and could not wait for the evening to start, so I could continue with the game. This rarely ever happens!
Your task is quite simple: You need to figure out who is who in the Roottree family tree. You do this by searching the internet (in the 1990s), looking through books, old magazines and so on. It felt really good once I was finished with both parts of the game. I only wish there were more games like this!
*A note about the links: I do not use Affiliate links. I chose to link to the games on Steam instead of other shops because Steam usually has the most reviews and the best information about a game. I recommend IsThereAnyDeal to check for sales.

Yesterday I took our son to his first PAX. I hadn’t been to one since 2019 (with the exception of PAX Online). My peak PAX attendance era 2008-2013 was before he was born! Now that he’s old enough for both more of the content and the amount of walking and waiting involved it was time for a shared father-son day of gaming. We had a ton of fun!
(Long post incoming.)
Our Day
The bus ride downtown was convenient except for the Sunday schedule timing. I know we’re on a mostly commuter only route but 30 minute headways are a pain. A neighbor even got on a few stops down the road in full fantasy armor cosplay (I think FFXIV?).
We started the day in the new Summit building since we wanted to attend an Omegathon round that morning and not walk the few blocks in between (or go through security) multiple times. As it turns out this was wise since the huge line was over at the old Arch building to get into the expo hall. It gave us time to explore the building, including the Classic Arcade and some of the tabletop vendors, with not many people around.
Some classic arcade shmup actionWe were also among the first people to hit the Merch area and pick up some swag including some cool pins. I’ve been collecting them since I was a kid so always enjoy cool designs, but I do not understand pin trading. Why would I want to give up pins that I like??
Merch! The Omegathon round was somewhat sparsely attended, maybe a half full smaller theater. At PAX East I remember it being more core to the event? It was still fun cheering everyone trying to beat the fastest time on the first stage of a 40 year old game. Kiddo of course was cheering for Sassy Wombat on name alone. There were some pretty impressive runs; it was fun to cheer along with the crowd. I think they underestimated their three run format for all of the Omeganauts so it ran into the next panel.
Excitebike for (emulated) NESWe ate our packed lunch (bagged with little hearts on it by Andrle) while on the go switching buildings. Due to my incorrect memory of the usual setup and some unclear signage we unnecessarily walked around the block to enter from the underpass side before taking the escalators up to the main Expo Hall.
We spent about three hours exploring various booths, mostly focused on our usual favorite indie game options, including those at PAX Rising and Wholesome Games. There may not be an Indie Megabooth at PAX anymore but the vibe is still there. We of course had to check out the Panic booth. There was a giant Playdate with a real working crank! We had planned on trying some games at the Nintendo booth but the line was too long.
Kiddo was interested in looking at the fancy light up PC hardware too (something we don’t have at all). He also recognized the mind flayer spelljammer ship on top of the Larian booth for Baldur’s Gate III so I’m doing something right. I of course had to finally try on a Star Trek jacket at the Volante Design booth. I’ve been getting those ads any time I open Instagram lately.
I did not know gaming rig figurine display was a thingWe headed back to Summit to finish our day in the tabletop expo. Lots of cool stuff to look at but the games closet shelf is really full at this point! I also managed to avoid more dice, but did get a pin. We decided not to try anything from the games library since it was getting late. We wrapped up with a quick snack stop (packed popcorn and a $4 convention center sprite).
We realized also that there there was VR freeplay, which I hadn’t seen anything about in any of the show information emails or app. Unfortunately the wait list was over two hours so we missed our chance; we would have had to sign up earlier in the day. Kid is very excited to try VR more since we don’t have it at home; we’ll have to see if one of his friends has a setup.
We did spend some brief time with the Console Freeplay, doing some Overcooked 2, which we’ve played together before (though not on Xbox Series S). We also briefly checked out the TCG and RPG area. There were tons of tables marked as reserved for Lorcana (which we’ve been enjoying lately) but no one playing at them, which was kinda odd.
We finished the evening grabbing a few more photos around the I think newly iconic building before walking back to the bus home. Unfortunately poor schedule timing meant we had to take a 4 and walk across the hill a bit, but that was nicer than waiting downtown another 20 minutes.
Mirrored ceilingThoughts
All in all, a super fun event. The rest of this post covers a few things about the convention in general before highlighting a few of our favorite game demos.
One general comment is that I have no idea how I used to do three days of an event like this! Especially when I often stayed late for concerts or open tabletop gaming. The six plus miles of slow walking and standing in line is apparently a lot for my now 40+ legs.
COVID Safety
There was no mask mandate of any kind and pretty minimal messaging before the show other than the usual “don’t spread PAX Plague” that existed before COVID. Like anyone else they basically just defer to state and local regulations or the venue, which doesn’t have any teeth anymore. That said I think we observed about 20% masking, higher than I’ve encountered anywhere else recently.
Kiddo and I masked the entire time (and ate outside) and it seemed like the ventilation was good and in many areas crowds weren’t super packed. The biggest risk is probably that so many people traveled to get here from areas with higher rates according to sewer data. Hopefully in a few days we won’t discover that I’m just bargaining.
Architecture
This was my first time in the new Summit building (having been to the old arch building several times between a few PAXen, PodCons, and a Planted Expo). LMN did some beautiful work.
I’m sure some of it is the newness but there are some really neat elements between the iconic staircase, the closeable atriums including The Hole, and tons of local art all over.
🕳️Kiddo commented on how cool all the brutalist elements in the old building over I-5 are, and while parts of it feel like a late ’80s mall the Freeway Park end still looks cool.
Penny Arcade
Obviously the web comic and its creators still loom large over the show, but they’re not as central as I remember they were a decade plus ago. ReedPop has owned it the entire time I’ve attended but especially the smaller Omegathon without Gabe and Tycho running it felt like the show is more of a general gaming convention that happens to feature some of their art and key panels. I wonder how many attendees regularly read the strip!
This isn’t a bad thing, and I gather it’s allowed them to not have to stress as much even as the event has gotten much larger. It probably also broadens the appeal inclusivity-wise given some of their past mistakes.
Mobile Gaming
Notably absent I thought was much mention at all of mobile gaming which is a huge part of the gaming experience but often considered lesser compared to console and PC gaming. It’s unfortunate because many of the kinds of casual puzzle games I love are on iOS.
It was also telling compared to 2019 and 2020 that I saw no mention of Apple Arcade. Almost all of the indie games we saw were coming to some combination of Switch and Steam. As we often said on our long hiatus podcast 25¢, Apple wants artfully made games but doesn’t seem to get game development. For indies the lack of game demos, early access, or even basic follow abilities makes it hard for them to commit to the platform. This has come up more and more recently in the context of the recent announcement that Monument Valley 3 is coming to iOS via Netflix.
Video Game Highlights
The Panic booth was one of our first stops and this is one of the upcoming games they’re publishing. It reminded me a lot of a kind of minimal HyperCard aesthetic. While a game didn’t last long before your fly dies, there are various time rewinding mechanics available to buy yourself more time.
This was one of the cozy games we were excited about when we watched the Wholesome Direct a few months ago. We had to wait a while to try it but it’s a nice lightweight city sim with a neat art style. Felt kinda like managing one floor of SimTower, but as a street.
Kind of a mashup between a deck building card game and a relationship sim? You’re the AI of a dystopian corporate office trying to manipulate the occupants to help you escape. Apparently they originally conceived of it as a tabletop game. The demo was interesting if maybe a little content wise too old for kiddo.
Super cool hand-felted stop motion animation sprites made by a tiny team from Port Townsend, WA. The gameplay demo was a side scroller reminiscent of Gradius, but simpler and fuzzier. This seems like an astounding amount of work to make, I hope they’re able to be efficient with their assets!
We were familiar with Wilmot’s Warehouse (actually got it for Andrle a while back to scratch an organization itch) so this puzzle continuation is a neat addition to the theme. Has a nice jazzy soundtrack.
Tabletop Game Highlights
We saw their cool glitch art logo across the hall and got a full round demo of this two-player duel game. It had an interesting AI singularity theme and pretty good balanced gameplay. We won by one round.
The original Sonic games for Genesis are big in our house, so this one jumped out at us. We got a brief explanation of the rules and it seems like a fun group versus the game rolling game.
This was probably the highlight of the show! It’s an interesting hybrid between a VTT and a turn-based RPG video game. They call it a “digital tabletop RPG”. They have their own rule system and it can run locally or remote. The game engine helps with rule enforcement and assets (including character audio!) but the game master still controls everything. It seemed simple enough that even a younger kid could run a campaign.
Their business model is interesting too… the base game and first small adventure are free but additional adventures or asset packs are paid. The main thing I’m wondering is what their roadmap is like… will they be able to churn out new adventures as quickly as a committed group can play through them? Maybe one a quarter or so?
They had a successful Kickstarter last year but their team seems a lot bigger than that funding level so I hope they’ve got their investment sorted. This is a system I think we’d like to commit to for family game time.

new game: ghost patrol! protect the town from an onslaught of spoooky spectres
I'd describe the gameplay as "open-ended puzzles" -- you'll have to be thinky and strategic with your movement, but I haven't designed it with any particular solutions in mind.
personally I've been playing it way too much - I'm hoping someone can beat my scores! but just clearing levels is an accomplishment too -- I'm told it's quite hard

Similar to a good record or song, some video games accompany me ever since I was first introduced to them. "The Sentinel" ("The Sentry" in the US) from 1986 is such a game. I was first introduced to it when I bought the tape version at a discount for my Commodore 64 (which was somewhere in late 1987).
I also played the AtariST, Amiga and ZX Spectrum versions, the latter being my favourite 8 bit version.
Today "The Sentinel" is often described as a "3D strategy game, involving resource management and timing". But back in the day the concept was absolutely new and often bulkily described as a "3D variant of the classic chess game".
And it seems that this game made an impression on other people as well, which is why there is a nice "fan remake" for modern systems: Pinnacle

If you like those 1980s "chequerd floor" aesthetics and like to solve logic puzzles but do not yet know "The Sentinel", then you should try out "Pinnacle"
