Oh, this must be one of the *early* generations, when the illumination came from a teeny-tiny #incandescent bulb 💡 instead of an #LED.

IIRC, they worked OK(ish) when the battery was still pretty fresh, but as the battery voltage diminished with normal use, the luminosity dropped off precipitously.🔋

But when those LED-illuminated models finally came along... Wowzers! 🤩 If you were looking straight at the watch face when you pressed the illumination button in the middle of the night, you'd temporarily blind yourself. 😵‍💫 Instead, you had to press the button while looking away, then gradually bring the watch into your field of view, so your eyes would have time to adjust. 🫣

    Those were the #GoodOldDays, eh?

    This is fascinating!

I've been studying #Czech, which shares a ton of #phonemes and #vocabulary with other #Slavic languages, but is written with a Latin-based character set (I say "Latin-based" because Czech uses an assortment of #diacritic marks as #pronunciation modifiers on an otherwise standard #Latin character set).

On several occasions, I've come across a #Russian or #Ukrainian word written in its native #Cyrillic script followed by a #phonetic pronunciation guide written in Latin characters, and consequently recognized the word as one that is shared with Czech. Those moments of recognition are just pure #linguistic glee.

He should team up with our dog #LucyFur, who growls menacingly at the USPS truck every day (but only because the driver doesn't actually come inside to give her pets and treats).

  7. #LucyFur really enjoys playing #fetch, but sometimes the weather outdoors is too hot/cold, or the ground is too muddy (like today), so sometimes we play #IndoorFetch instead. #LabsOfMastodon #DogsOfMastodon

  8. #EdgarAllanPurr and #AleisterMeowley are a couple of unrepentant chair thieves! 🤣

Fortunately, I have a sit/stand desk, so I don't need my own chair right now, but poor #LucyFur has to sit on the floor. 😢

Yep. The brand is #Wavlink. To their credit, they've been prompt about sending a replacement each time it's happened, but I've only had it since June, and this is the third failure. Their customer service is great, but their QC... Not so much.

  10. Today, my "time since my entire understanding of reality was truly rocked" counter was reset to zero multiple times in the span of less than one hour by this video:
    youtu.be/QqY8fY0TqaQ

I was already pretty familiar with the #DoubleSlitExperiment and the #ThreePolarizerParadox, but the rest of the material was totally new to me, and my mind was utterly blown to smithereens.

Kudos to the #AstrumSpace channel on #YouTube for this informative and well-made piece on the counterintuitive, "spooky" behavior of light at the #quantum level. Excellent #ScienceCommunication.

  11. @zachvat Let's hope the #DOJ waits until after the RNC chooses their nominee before they bring the hammer down. If the RNC nominates Trump, DOJ can just nab him the very next day. Otherwise, they should wait until election day, so Trump can run third party and siphon his base's votes away from the Republican nominee. #RossPerot 2.0

Just a heads-up, your website (iowacodecamp.com) says, "Call for speakers is open. Submit your talks here," but when I click the link (iowacodecamp.wufoo.com/forms/i), it says, "Sorry, but this form is no longer accepting submissions."

Additionally, the #IowaCodeCamp 2023 event details page on #CommunityDays (communitydays.org/event/2023-0) says that speaker submissions are open through June 9th, but the submission link there is the same as the one on your website.

However, the submission link in your pinned post here on Mastodon (bit.ly/ICCSpring2023Speakers) still works.

Can you clarify if there has been a glitch, or if submissions are actually closed? Thanks!

  13. I've never owned any vinyl records, and I'm certainly not about to start collecting digitally mangled music on floppy disks, but I have many unpopular opinions and preferences which tend to make most folks question my sanity, so if you happen to enjoy hearing the effects of aggressive dynamic range compression and bit depth/sample rate reduction in your music, then who am I to question your tastes? 🤔

I'll just be over here, patiently awaiting the inevitable MiniDisc Renaissance. 💽

At the atomic level, #NuclearFusion in a reactor is identical to the nuclear fusion process that powers the sun, so when the 1st generation #FusionReactors start coming online in the next decade or so, I wonder if people will call them "#SolarPowered."

I mean, they wouldn't be right, but they wouldn't exactly be wrong, either. 🤔

I had to read this toot 3x before I finally managed to convince myself that I wasn't actually misreading #StonedApeTheory as #StoneTapeTheory. 🤣 Fascinating article, btw.

Oh, then that's definitely a more interesting idea, but I think you'd have to figure out how to #assimilate all human brains into a #Borg #HiveMind first. Which (if #Elon gets his way, and is allowed to start implanting a Neuralink in every human at birth) might just be feasible in the not-so-distant future. #SilverLining?

    > Yes, but Mick has more wrinkles. 😀

Those are "crow's feet," a.k.a. "smile lines," a.k.a. "marks left on the skin by a long, fulfilling life brimming with hearty laughter, warm friendships, and general merriment."

So yeah, of course Mick has more of those than Mitch does.

One could possibly be forgiven for assuming that #FOSS couldn't have really taken off until the #Internet reached a certain critical mass, and that it had only done so in the final decade of the 20th century. Bit of a stretch… Whatever. 🤷

But wow, they actually said that #NASA started in the late #90s? Literally the most famous thing NASA ever did (not to mention the most watched live TV broadcast in history) was the #Apollo11 moon landing on July 20th, 1969 — a date etched on the timeline of major historic events, right between D-Day (June 6th, 1944) and September 11th, 2001.

I wasn't at #fosdem, but by any chance were the keynote speakers you mentioned perhaps just super-young, or maybe from a #NonWestern culture, where the specific details (like names and dates) of western-centric historic events aren't emphasized in schools? 🤔

On the other hand, maybe they're just typical rich, entitled #TechBros, and #ChatGPT wrote their keynotes for them. 🤣 #SeemsLegit

I think #verification on #Mastodon does a lot more than "literally nothing." It proves that the person writing these toots is the same person writing those blog articles on my website, and those code repositories on my #GitHub profile.

Now, the real question: Is that kind of verification actually valuable? For a relatively obscure guy like me, whose influence extends only as far as his own personal and professional networks, not extremely. But there's always a non-zero risk that someone out there will attempt to deceive someone I know by pretending to be me. I never want that to happen to anyone, especially those in my personal and professional networks, so I'm just doing what I can to establish a known baseline of my identity. #TrustButVerify

As she should. Any organization that stores such #SensitiveData should have #infosec on the same level as the #BigBanks (hardware token #MFA on every login, #DualControl on the most sensitive stuff, #honeypots, #IDS, etc.), but that was clearly not the case here. Hopefully, her #attorneys will mop the floor with this reckless organization, thereby setting a precedent that makes other #HealthcareProviders think twice about skimping on #cybersecurity.

I live in #Iowa, so all of my #CongressCritters are irredeemable #fascists and #CorporateGoons. I really wish I could say that writing to them might have an effect. Believe me, I've tried many times. But their responses were always generic form letters that went something like, "Thank you, dear constituent, for sharing your thoughts and concerns. Now, let me tell you about all of the ways I'm going to totally ignore everything you've said, and continue taking my marching orders from megacorps, superPACs, and Jesus of course."

We need to push for a new standard in #CryptographicCamera technology, where every camera has a built-in #TPM and uses its own unique, immutable key to #CryptographicallySign every photo and every frame of every video that it shoots.

That way, if someone claims to have photo/video evidence of a crime being committed, they can prove its authenticity by submitting the #CryptoCamera along with the evidence it allegedly captured.

Of course, these cameras would need to close the #AnalogHole, perhaps by disabling the signing feature whenever they are shooting a screen of any kind (TV/monitor, projector, phone, tablet, etc.), though other countermeasures should be explored as well. And yes, it would be theoretically possible for a determined and sophisticated attacker to spoof the #CryptographicSignature and make a #deepfake appear as if it had been signed by a #CryptoCam, but that would be a significantly higher barrier to entry than simply creating the deepfake itself.

Is #English your native language, as it is mine? #Polish and #Czech are both #Slavic languages, and I've found Czech way more challenging than the other languages I've dabbled with (#Spanish and #French, both of which are #Romance languages, and seem to have a lot in common with English in terms of their #grammar, #SentenceStructure, and largely #Latin-based lexicons).

Of course, English is primarily a #Germanic language, so the reasons why Romance languages seem easier to me than Slavic languages are probably best explained by someone who knows a lot more about #Linguistics, #LanguageHistory, and #ProtoIndoEuropean.

    Calling all #Linguists and #LanguageNerds! 🤓
