The suggestion that partisan #gerrymandering has nothing to do with race is fantastical. It ignores the defining role of #race & #racism in shaping partisan affiliation in the #US. For instance, the embrace of the #CivilRights movement by the national #DemocraticParty is, acc/to many historians, the main reason so many white Southerners became #Republicans in the second part of the 20th century, a phenomenon known as realignment.

Over the course of several months, #SCOTUS has had a hand in congressional maps in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Virginia & California. Most of those decisions have benefited the #Republican Party.

The Alabama case is also the latest “emergency” order tied to the court’s April decision on the #VotingRightsAct, in which a 6-3 majority gutted the ability of groups to bring claims of racial #discrimination under that 1965 landmark #law.

@ricardoharvin Definitely far beyond. I’d argue we’re not living with the aftereffects of the #SouthernStrategy; we’re living inside its end state & nothing less than active participation by our citizens can hope to save us & our remaining civil liberties.

We live in interesting times. The dissolution of the alliance between white US Catholics, their bishops appointed by Popes John Paul II and Benedict, and white evangelicals is going to make for some serious fireworks, when the Republican party for some years now has managed to convince white Catholics that voting GOP was their religious duty.

What was unexpected: an American pope who would begin breaking that alliance and insisting that the US Catholic bishops, a majority of whom are comfortable with the alliance, start questioning whether it reflects real Christian, real Catholic, values. Ditto for the challenge to the 6 in 10 white Catholics who have voted three times for Trump.

What has energized this movement all along has been resistance to rights for people of color, women, and LGBTQ people. This alliance laid the foundation for someone like Trump to come along and claim that God is using him to save the nation — when anyone with any real sense of Christian faith knows how blasphemous and ludicrous that claim is.

In the 1970s, with white Southern evangelicals outraged that the Democratic party had passed laws recognizing the rights of people of color, the US Catholic bishops made a fateful move: they allied themselves with those white evangelicals and created a Religious Right movement that became an arm of the Republican party.
