  6. To Deny Full Disk Permissions Or Not?

If you think Hamlet twisted and turned too much trying to make a decision, the Apple technorati are tying themselves into knots over the latest AI brouhaha visited upon us all by Meta and OpenAI like the ghost of the young Dane’s father.

The issue at hand initially came to light via a post by Jason Aten that I linked to last week. Aten claimed he caught Meta’s Muse agent apparently delving into his Messages even though he says he did not permit such access. Apple, presumably in response to Aten’s post, issued a statement saying it was going to put in additional controls for permission to grant Full Disk Access. Apple calls that access “extraordinary” and claims this is a forward looking move given what most assume will be more agents with more capabilities proliferating.  Here’s a quote:

Some developers are using Full Disk Access in ways that could put users at risk, exposing everything on their systems—including files, mail, messages, and even browsing history—without users’ full knowledge and understanding. For communication apps, this can also compromise the privacy of the people users are communicating with.

Going forward, we will introduce additional controls to ensure that users who genuinely wish to grant an app this extraordinary level of access can only do so with very explicit user action. Addressing this is critical. As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially. We are committed to ensuring users clearly understand these risks before granting such access, so they can make informed decisions about their own data and privacy.

On the one hand it’s easy to see that some sort of additional controls would be a good thing for the vast majority of users who probably still don’t know what an agent that might be requesting Full Disk Access is. On the other, there are some well trusted developers with apps that actually require that access to function. If there was a third hand, it would be the largely more tech-literate tech press who are seeing the challenge before Apple and concerned developers. The apprehension is that this might further lock down Mac computing and make it look more like iOS/iPadOS computing. Nick Heer has a good piece on the matter here.

Whether Aten’s claims are true or not, I think the writing is on the wall in bold strokes that most who pay attention to these matters have trouble trusting any and all of the participants in the race now running in what often feels like the beginning of a wild west stampede. Remember Apple has a dog in this hunt also, even though it may be bringing up the rear.

As someone who supports a number of Mac users, many of them blissfully unaware of potential threats, the thought of talking to them about what Full Disk Access might or might not mean is a bit daunting. At this point no one knows what Apple’s plans entail or to what degree. I would safely bet that Apple has the less tech-savvy category of users firmly in mind however those plans turn out. My guess is the thinking is that If they’re smart enough to see and understand the problem, one would assume they’re smart enough to work through and beyond it.

In a way, we’ve been here before with aggressive popups requesting permissions on both Macs and Windows. Reactions and overreactions begat more reactions and overreactions. In my mind, as serious as those past episodes seemed, what we’re now facing feels more fraught with potential peril. Especially for those who don’t have the time or inclination to pay attention in a fast moving tech era that has leaders stating that “the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology.”

And keep in mind, those of us old enough to remember those past reactions and overreactions aren’t the targets the Metas and OpenAIs are aiming at. All you have to do is see the cute little Muse’s and Dots to understand a long game that might not take that much longer to unveil itself further.

  7. A Modern Handbook of Physics – B.M. Yavorsky, A.A. Detlaf (LaTeX Version)

ScreenshotIn this post, we will see the LaTeX version of a great resource in physics:
A Modern Handbook of Physics by B. M. Yavorksy and A. A. Detlaf.

About the book (From the Preface)

The basic sciences and physics, in particular, are of prime importance today in the training of engineers for the various branches of the national economy. This has led to fundamental changes in recent years in the teaching of physics in engineering institutes, and to the students of other educational institutions in which they do not major in physics. The scope and scientific level of physics courses have been substantially supplemented and cover the main trends in the development of modern physics. Consequently, the physics textbooks for engineering students have inevitably become three-volume editions of almost fifteen hundred pages. The need has arisen, in this connection, for a concise handbook on this subject.

The aim of the authors was to fulfill this need. In scope and depth this handbook includes all of the definitions, formulas and information covered in the most comprehensive and up-to-date physics courses of engineering institutes
and the physics departments of universities and colleges. Physical laws are concisely formulated, all the necessary explanations are given and, in many cases, derivations as well. Though it plays a vital role in the teaching of physics, experimental material has been omitted. This is due only to a lack of space. All the units and symbols comply with the requirements of the SI Units of physical quantities and systems of units are listed and dealt with in a short appendix.

This handbook is designed primarily for engineering students, as well as college and university students studying, but not majoring in physics. It can be used to advantage by engineers and graduate students, as well as by instructors and lecturers of intermediate schools and colleges.

Mathematical knowledge required in using the handbook is within the scope of the ordinary mathematics courses of engineering institutes. The detailed index and the numerous cross references, indicating the chapter, section and subsection, are of aid in finding any required information.

The book was translated from the Russian by Nicholas Weinstein and was published by Mir in 1982.

Note: It took me a while to typeset this one. I had started it a long back in 2020, and continued in breaks. This is a long book – almost 1000 pages with eight parts and 43 chapters! At times it felt as if the book will never be completed, it took me on and off more than six years to complete (the first commit is in 2020!, see the screenshot below). The book was essentially complete in June last year, with only few minor tweaks remaining (essentially the margin placements of captions and diagrams) and diagrams to be redone in vector graphics. I have done a few initial ones into SVG, but then I sort of left it. I have not added the appendices and index. May be some time in the future we will have a release that has all diagrams as vector images.

Commits from Sep 2020 to Sep 2026

But anyways, finally here it is. Hope this is useful to all the readers.

PS: Though I have checked (and rechecked), I am sure there will be errors in the typesetting. Do tell if you find any (I am sure you will.) – Damitr

You can get the book here and here.

This book is an Open Educational Resource OER

Released under CC BY NC 4.0

PPS: In the works is Handbook of Elementary Mathematics by Vygodsky (and two textbooks by Irodov), I had real pleasure in typesetting some of the pages there. Hopefully we will see this perhaps before the year end.

  10. Twenty-one critical and high findings from an architectural review of go-tool-base went out to a fleet of agents. Twenty-one merge requests came back, fast, and all of them green.

Somewhere around the fourth or fifth I realised I had no idea whether any of it was real.

A green suite arriving alongside a fix can mean four things:

    1. The fix worked.
    2. The bug never existed, and the change does nothing.
    3. It fixed something else nearby.
    4. The test was written after the change, against the changed code, and was never capable of failing.

You can't tell those apart by reading the diff, and certainly not by reading an agent's description of it.

So I stopped the flow and asked: is every agent reproducing its bug before touching it?

What came back was the same test run against unmodified main, failing. A CLI invoked wrongly that printed usage and exited 0: "expected 2 actual -1", because the exit function was never called at all. And alongside it, the two non-fatal subtests passing before the fix.

That last part is the negative control. Two things broken, two closely related things demonstrably fine, a clear line between them. Without it a wall of FAILED is a screenshot rather than a proof.

It's cheap to ask for, cheap to read at a glance, and very hard to fake by accident. Review changes shape: less reading the change, more checking the evidence it turned up carrying.

The Alcázar of Seville is a fortified palace (alcázar) built in Seville by the Umayyads of Spain and modified several times during and after the Muslim period. It is considered the most brilliant example of Mudejar architecture on the Iberian Peninsula.

Sumika turned and advanced toward me.

“Awwk!” I squawked. I was terrified by the look on her face.

“You, you, moron!” She shouted, raising the board.

I took off, but I was unused to my damaged tail and misjudged my flight path, colliding with a skull. The two of us, the fruit and I, tumbled to the floor. All the while, the creatures laughed hysterically at my plight.

I dashed for the far exit as skulls fell all around me. Behind me, Mistress shrieked, “What are those!?” Sumika’s running footsteps followed momentarily as she joined me on the new flight of stairs where I had landed.

“What a #parade of horrors!” she exclaimed.

“You said it, Whackum,” I responded.

  16. Late light on a quiet canal. Terracotta roofs, ochre walls, and a reflection so still it almost doubles the street. A handful of ducks cut the only lines in the water. No rush, just the last warm hour before the sky cools.

  17. River gull for day 5. I saw this gull at so-called Kingston Point Beach during the local Running Down the Walls this year*, when I took a moment to walk down to the beach from the pavilion where we were hanging out, sheltered from the rain.

Gulls at the river beach also inspired art for a flyer for the event. I had seen them on a cold December day at beach a couple of years ago. I won’t go so far as to say the birds on the flyer are gulls – they’re more abstract than that – but when it was time to sketch out some flyer art, those birds at the river, flying free, were on my mind.

  21. “Release” is a #dystopian #SciFi #MMRomance by Marie Sexton.

Misha grew up in the “trenches” of lower Davlova, where the poorest citizens scratch out a living without technology while the high-born “purebloods” live in electrified luxury behind the walls of the inner city on the hill. Misha gets taken in by one of the clans, criminal gangs that run all sorts of operations in the city. Over the years, Misha learned the fine art of pickpocketing. Sometimes he also turns tricks to see if a potential mark had a lot of money, and where he kept it.

One day, the clan leader offers Misha a new opportunity. One of the most powerful men in the city is looking for a new toy boy and wants someone “exotic.” The clan leader isn’t just asking Misha to prostitute himself. She wants him to gain the man’s confidence and learn his secrets. The information may provide the catalyst that starts a revolution.
