Checked the serial number, 109115, and that's from September 1981. That can't be true, this is definitely a Taiwanese version, even the serial sticker says so. And it can run on a battery. But the PCB version is from 1984. Oh I love these kinds of little mysteries hidden in such a small object.

This battered Boss DS-1 caught my attention. Asked the seller where it was made. Taiwan, so not the more sought after Japanese version. But the thing is, early Taiwanese versions were basically the same as their Japanese counterparts, up until 1994. Then Boss started using a dual opamp instead of the TA7136 IC which meant the design had to be changed.
So could this be an early Taiwanese version with the much desired Toshiba opamp?

The whole bottom plate rubber sticker thingy of the SD-1 is completely gone so you can't see where it was made.

Oh that Uni-Vibe/Boss VB2 effect in Thinking Of You from #SoccerMommy, just beautiful. I happen to have one too, albeit a cheap Behringer clone. But I modded it so I can surely get the same effect.
I've added a small switch to select either the stock setup or the superslow vibrato mod. I think I used this howto at the time: https://paulinthelab.blogspot.com/2012/10/behringer-uv300-rate-mod-slow-down.html
Need to put it on my pedalboard and get myself a Jaguar or Jazzmaster...

Yeah, building these kind of things quickly becomes a chaos... But managed to set up a testing rig and behold, it works! And sounds quite cool too! Happy days.
And no, I can't run it through a real amp but my Mod Dwarf does the trick. And yeah, that's the MOD web ui running on my Debian machine. Come to think of it, this is mainly open source stuff, both the analogue guitar effect and the digital chain.

Progress so far. I tend to forget just how long building these kits takes until I actually do it. Mostly looking neat so far, except for one of the diodes that is at an angle (the leads of the provided diodes are super thick and un-bendy). Sockets, resistors and diodes done.
