Due to the influx of critical security vulnerabilities in the past weeks, we are now allowing unattended-upgrades to reboot the system. The reboots will happen some time during nighttime (UTC-ish).
Reboots will be noticable as a short service downtime, but should take less than 5 minutes in any case.
However, if you UTC-wake up at some point and sjn is down… feel free to ping us here, probably something wasn't as reboot-safe as we thought.

Er det noen miljø (annet enn kanskje @attacnorge) som har tenkt på det samme i Norge?

@hopland I would agree, though if we allow ourselves to predict the future, we have to take #AI alignment issues into account.
To me, this particular timeline looks quite undesirable given the current state of the art. #AGI #ASI
(I'd even argue that #AIalignment is fundamentally unreachable, but that's a longer discussion)

I cannot understate how fun I think Marty Sears' "Rat Run" puzzles are, and I'm soooo stoked that season 3 is about to begin!
What is this, you ask?
It's a series of #Sudoku variation puzzles with a funny and clever story-line featuring the exploits of Finkz the lab rat (!)
Love it, love it, love it! 😄

Is your #management gambling away the #business on the #llm #slop #machine? 😱
They're so brave! No risk, no gain, right? It's not like there's anything better to invest in. Remember – "Get rich quick" schemes have always worked, and your future is safe and predictable.

I just discovered #TheMarketExit channel on youtube. Quite well-done and well worth browsing through.
This is the video that showed up in my feed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYoA1R38cuc

Nice!
Someone has begun an #HPMOR comic! 😄
Who would have known that a JKR-free #rational fan fiction of #HarryPotter (love the work, don't care for the author) would be awesome enough to be made into both audiobooks, podcasts and a cartoon?
I'm really happy more are exposed to this work. It's _really_ good! 😄
(Triva: I learned of it in the #rakulang IRC channel, back when it was called #perl6 <3)
Recommended!
If you like the first chapters, you'll like it all!

Thank you, John Stewart, for putting together an easy-to-understand conversation about the threats and dangers of #ai
And thank you Geoffrey Hinton, for the patience and clarity around this topic.
This is a brilliant and crystal clear interview, and well worth listening to twice - 10/10 - must listen!

"This title is reasonable" – a commentary on LW, speaking to the title of the book "If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies"
https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/voEAJ9nFBAqau8pNN/the-title-is-reasonable
(audio: 28min)
I've read the book. While the title raised my eyebrows originally, the argument contained is very well put forward, and lived up to my high expectations to the authors.
Anyone who cares about where our future with #AI is heading, would do well to read this book – and share it with policy makers!

Hei, #fediverse!
Please forward this #survey by the #EU #Commission about #OpenSource #Sustainability to anyone you know that uses Open Source:

Thank you @thejuicemedia for your Honest Government Ad on #Norway #oil #politics! It's spot on!

Loving the creativity of "The Archive In Between"

At the #igf2025 session on encryption and safety, they seem to be more interested in talking about tertiary issues like funding and skills shortage, but only after having the FBI share their perspectives.
Not a useful session, too one-sided, and with too little discussion on principles that actually help solve the balancing issues. 😟
E.g. principles like "Do not introduce solutions that you wouldn't accept your worst political opponent be in control of."

Dear #OpenSource #Fediverse: Is it time to revive some of the good old parts of the #Perl and #RakuLang communities?
I'm specifically thinking of the "fun-with-perl" mailing list...
https://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.fwp/2001.html
(or maybe we already have enough #fun in our lives? 😅)
-
@lemgandi @cstross The reputation was for being "write-only", and was propagated by people who didn't realize one does NOT have to know "every" way to code it in order to write something well.
What one _does_ need is the ability to learn and teach, and to write code with a human audience in mind.
Coding can be extremely fun, and especially with #Perl and #RakuLang - IF you allow yourself to play and share the joy.
Don't be a #toolblamer, be a good colleague instead.

At the German #Perl Workshop, I had the privilege to organize a panel about #OpenSource #Sustainability on #CPAN and it's related communities.
Together with Ferenc Erki (@ferki), Julien Fiegehenn (simbabque), and Sören M. Laird Sörries (@relais), we talked about meet-ups, volunteering, mental health, funding, and much more. It was great!

Just found @dries's 2019 blog post looking at the Prisoner's Dilemma as a way to describe Open Source sustainability,
https://dri.es/balancing-makers-and-takers-to-scale-and-sustain-open-source
Anyone here know of other/more recent resources that dive a little further into this topic?

Today @isocnorway has their general assembly, with a special focus on #igf2025 in Lillestrøm, Norway! Looking forward to it! ☺️

Nice!
The #Perl mongers map is back!
It's in a bit reduced form since it's hayday, but if you know of a nearby #PerlMongers group that ought to be visible, then you can help put it on the map too:
It's just a quick PR to https://github.com/perlorg/www.pm.org/blob/master/perl_mongers.xml 🤩
Easy-peasy! 😉

Have you noticed how we have been saying "channel" in this thread, and not "chat room" anymore?
That's right: search.jabber.network now uses the #modernxmpp terminology (see https://docs.modernxmpp.org/client/groupchat/ ) throughout the entire interface.
If you spot a place where we still mention "group chats" or "chat rooms" (aside from the technical explanation at the top of the "for room owners" page), let us know~.
-
@joshbressers Agreed! The SOCenter, the OSPOffice and the devs (and maybe even the procurement folks and the lawyers!) should probably be physically located next to each other. 🙂

Fun to see some old #Perl #Regex lore on the #StandupMaths youtube channel!

I _think_ this trick hails to something Abigail (iykyk) published back in 1998. History repeats! 😄

Love what #RationalAnimations are doing these days. Lots of good stuff coming from that direction.
"That Alien Message" – a short story about how much a difference speed has, when considering an #AGI.

At #FOSDEM #FOSDEMFringe, #FOSS license and security compliance tools workshop, with good people who make good things happen in the #SBOM world – @allanfriedman, Philippe Ombredanne and Victoria Ontiveros!
Topics discussed: #OpenSource, #SupplyChains, #CPAN and much more.
Thanks for a super productive workshop! 😁

Hooray! Today, December 22nd 2024, at 03:28 UTC, it's #Solstice! 😁

Upgrading my personal project computer OS on a #Friday13th? 😅
Done, and it seems to have gone well. It's almost like this is any other Friday! 😆

In the talk above (about #AI's and #ChatGPT's #AlignmentProblem), Harris mentions another presentation he gave in March.
This is the one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoVJKj8lcNQ
He talks about how we handle AI being a "Civilizational Right of Passage Moment".
He's very nice about it! Too nice, maybe.
How about just calling it our next "Great Filter Moment" instead? 😐
-
#Recommendation: Super useful conversation between @lessig and Tristan Harris about #SocialMedia, #Policy, #AI, and the #AlignmentProblem, and how risks and failures there are likely to shape things to come.
9/1 (on a 0-10/0-10 scale) Signal/Noise ratio, 1h21m, multitask-friendly audio.

Awesome conversation With @davidmcraney (of "You Are Not So Smart" and "How Minds Change" fame) about persuasion, #DeepCanvassing, #StreetEpistemology and the things that need to be in place for people change their minds.
Very useful, and I love that he's still sharing his findings, and even finding additional relevant studies to share.

Fantastic lecture about perception, emotions, biases and Why Facts Don't Change Our Minds.
55 minutes well spent.
The most useful realization this lecture offered me?
When someone is "locked into" a belief, they may have left everything else behind to get there. What they may need to get out is not only compassion, but also a stretched-out hand, showing there actually *are* ways out.
-
Is it ethical to try convince someone to change their mind about a contentious issue?
I think the last few episodes of David McRaney's "You Are Not So Smart" podcast offers a good case for the answer "Yes!"
I love these discussions! Always thought-provoking, and with useful perspectives.
-
Is there a science around changing minds?
Yes, and here's a really good conversation around debating, conversations, how to convince people, what works and why.
In this conversation with David McRaney on Intelligence², we get a really nice introduction and overview of the ideas behind some of these methods.
Warmly #recommended 50 minute listen.

@EndlessMason I don't know.
I'm of course hoping the @PerlRakuFoundation can pick up some of what's left to do after EPO closes doors, but as long as TPRF's capacity to act is purely volunteer-based, I'm not holding my breath. 😞
Personally, I think it's high time for businesses & institutions that depend on #Perl and #CPAN to reach out to establish some long-term #sustainable ways to keep the #OpenSource activity going on.
#SustainOSS is a participation sport, and everyone has to step up.
-
What do you think is missing? I'd love to hear! 😁
