The fear to be different is really the fear to be a sovereign individual. To refuse to be determined by the other gender's demands. That's how people refuse to be truly individual and remain dependant. What makes someone different is to be bravely oneself.
Since people are too coward to do that they depend on outside orientation. For men it is typically what the economy demands. For women it's typically what men demand. -
If male and female are sincere in their feelings they will reach a point where they have to conceded they don't agree. That's the moment where both gain independence and a right to engage with society. Female submission and male domination depend on never getting to that point.
