  1. Tonight's project: #Modding the #firmware of my #Sony FDR-AX100E #camcorder! Normally it only supports recording 4K (UHD) at 25 fps (#PAL), but using the PMCA GUI firmware modding tool I enabled recording at 30 fps (#NTSC). Now the camcorder will be much more useful! This mod must be somewhat recent, when I did some research years ago this solution did not exist. Actually it is meant for the newer Sony #AX53E camcorder, but the exact same process also works for the #AX100E 🙂

  2. Here is the finished Kenwood KX-W8020 cassette deck. Lubricated solenoids and motors, adjusted speed and azimuth. Thankfully the belts are still fine 🙂

  6. Here's a heart-shaped tape drive belt for you 😄. Wanted to fix a #Datassette for a friend quickly, so I replaced the belt and tried to align the azimut, but as it turns out, this little fella seems to have problems transmitting data reliably. I've never seen this before, but sometimes it will read something (as the align tool indicates to me onscreen), but then again it will not output any signals the next time I turn it on, although the drive is working, the spools are spinning and so on. After a few tries, it works again - until it doesn't. Impossible to align and test it in that condition. Does anybody have any ideas what might be causing it?

  7. My #C64 has a new toy: #Tapuino V0.43. With it you can pack your TAP files back onto a cassette - which I did tonight for a while. Using the amazing Slushload V3 on my PC, I converted a bit over 400kB worth of games (as PRG files) into TAP files and onto one side of a C20 cassette. I did not use the highest compression, so you can easily fit half a meg and even more onto that space, which is nothing short of amazing. I used a write speed that allows for a transfer rate of up to 740 Bytes per second. You can max it out at 1,5kB per second, but I have yet to find a #Datassette that works with that setting. Fast loading from a tape? This must be the future! 😎 #retrocomputing

  8. Quick lunch break at home - time for a belt replacement on my #commodore #datassette 😎 The old belt lies on the machine. That was pretty much done, but I am nonetheless amazed that these things do not desintegrate into smeery semi-liquid stuff like on many more expensive tape drives of the time.

  9. @pybonacci @robintw #datassette looks quite interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!

  10. I watched MVG's "How Old-School Cassette Tape Drives Played Games" while I was playing #MadMixII, a great #PacMania clone made by #TopoSoft, on the #AmstradCPC emulator for the #Anbernic #RG353p and I was surprised to learn how different the #C64 #Datassette was (digital vs analog), how error correction worked and how some folks invented the Turbo Loader, which was a very small programme loaded at first which changed how the #C64 interpreted the data on the cassette.

  11. Who else cherishes their #C64 #Datassette so much that they actually use a dust cover for it? Bonus question: Who takes it off to use the tape drive regularly?
