The #RobertFergusonObservatory is absolutely lovely. I was #Camping in #SugarloafRidgeStatePark yesterday, and managed to attend one of their viewing days.

They start with a delightful presentation demonstrating the absolute absurdly astronomical magnitude of space, and then let you wander and look through their 3 telescopes while docents point them at nebula, planets, and even the Andromeda Galaxy!

It was an absolute blast and I will be coming back!

Some time back I looked into making an adaptor to go from #Kenwood accessories to a #Yaesu radio… as there seems to be a lot out there for Kenwood than Yaesu, and Kenwood are no longer making amateur radio gear (at least not for the VK market). (And sadly, the Chinese stuff has rubbish support for APRS which I use a lot. Not that Yaesu is _much_ better…)

I had some success connecting accessory PTT to ground, accessory MIC to MIC and hooking accessory SPK to SPK via a capacitor. That meant the DC path to the microphone was blocked by the capacitor, in steady-state conditions, keeping the radio out of TX.

However, the moment anything made a noise, DC current flowed across the capacitor, and suddenly there was a DC path from microphone, through speaker and capacitor to ground… radio would go into TX mode.

I also tried a transformer in the speaker audio path, but it seems the radio doesn't generate enough flux through the transformer to drive a speaker at the other end.

There's a low-current 3.3V line on the Yaesu rigs… and I'm thinking that might be my answer. Two options come to mind after some research:

1. using a P-channel MOSFET: source to radio MIC, drain to accessory MIC, 1k+ resistor between gate and 3.3V, then hook accessory PTT to the gate. Theory being, pull-up resistor will keep MOSFET in HI-Z turning microphone off, the moment PTT gets hit, gate connects to 0V, turns on MOSFET and allows current through to the electret microphone to engage TX.
2. use a solid-state relay… one possible option is Vishay VO1400AEF (https://au.element14.com/vishay/vo1400aeftr/relay-mosfet-spst-no-0-1a-60v/dp/2396109)

For example, why doesn’t its repeater list allow FM repeaters like Icom does? And why couldn’t we get a GPS lock? And why, oh why is the bluetooth not compatible with Air Pods? Das war ein spontaner #Einkauf ohne #Auto aber mit #Einkaufswagen.

Nachdem die über 50 Jahre alte #Kenwood Maschine meiner Frau in Rauch aufgegangen war, sind wir über ein günstigeres Ausstellungsmodell gestolpert, genau von dem Modell das wir als Nachfolger ausgemacht haben.

Wir hatten schon Einkäufe dabei, u.a. 6 kg Bücher, trotzdem war der Transport gut möglich, ohne gross Schweiss zu verursachen.

Die #HomeAssistant-Integration sollte ich mir mal genauer anschauen, vielleicht kann man darüber einen #Amateurfunk-#Transceiver über die #HeadUnit des Autos fernsteuern.

Ansonsten scheint Android Auto aus Sicherheitsgründen (Vermeidung von Ablenkung des Fahrers) so zugenagelt zu sein, dass #HamRadio-Anwendungen eher durch's Raster fallen, da nur offizielle App-Store-Apps die Android-Auto-Funktionen nutzen dürfen und dafür nur eine recht enge Liste an App-Typen zugelassen wird. Wobei man Funkgeräte-Fernsteuerung vielleicht noch als IoT verargumentieren kann...

Das Beste wäre, #Yaesu, #Kenwood, #Icom & Co würden sich des Themas mit offiziellen Apps annehmen um den veränderten Bedingungen in modernen Autos Rechnung zu tragen.

At #HamRadio2024, I treated myself with a #thd75. I am confused on what the [CALL] button is supposed to do. From the manual, I get that this provides quick access to a "calling" frequency. So, pressing [CALL] and menu 204 should be identical. Yet, all my device does, is entering TX like PTT but only when in analog modes.

I just updated the firmware to 1.03 without any effect on this behavior.

Anybody able to shed some light on this.

Yes, as I said, 2A continuous managed to drain the LiFePO4 battery I was using to power the KX2, this was 12.6V and after a few minutes it got to 11.2V and started misbehaving. Old tech is power hungry. #Kenwood #R5000
