  1. Can you imagine how the MAGA‑flavoured Alberta separatists would react if, constitutionally, BC could build a massive renewable energy project anywhere it wanted in the province? The outrage would be instant and volcanic, but somehow the reverse is “common sense federalism.” #cdnpoli #bcpoli #abpoli

  2. Went for a little wander down the road in Oberon this morning and found some Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoos, and some Crimson Rosellas (adult and juvenile).

These were at Yelarbon Lagoon the other day.

  5. Also spotted yesterday afternoon at Gilgandra was this small Common Wallaroo.

It was quite wary, with this being a significant crop from about 50m or so away.

  7. This morning at Yelarbon, I saw several Red-rumped Parrots, including this pair that popped down to the lagoon for a drink.

  8. Empire Strikes Back is currently on Japanese TV (it's almost over). I just watched the "I am your father" scene and... Darth Vader's delivery was shit. He speaks way too fast, his words have no time to make an impact. I was half-expecting Luke to ask him to repeat because he couldn't hear well...

  9. I always liked Rogue One, but never loved it. Not sure why. Maybe the fact that the characters are not developed enough for the most part.
However, I just rewatched it for the first time just after rewatching Andor, and it does hit different. In parts because of Cassian Andor himself (who's now more than "fleshed out") but also because of characters like Saw Guerrera or General Draven, etc. And over all, the show is so good that it makes the movie better.

  10. I popped out this afternoon for a spot of birding. Wasn't the best time of day for it, but still photographed 19 species (saw a few more than that).

  11. We've had a wet week, and clearly it was wet enough that this little micro-bat decided its usual roost was too damp, so it's sheltering under a rug on our veranda stairwell railing.

  12. So... My university has decided to have a "new" mascot (I didn't know we already had one, I guess this sort of K with eyes that shows up from time to time here and there?).

  18. When I first moved to Japan, I used to try as many "unknown" (to me) soft drinks I could get my hands on, and then report on whatever social media I used at the time. I haven't done it in years, but yesterday at the supermarket, one drink grabbed my attention. Mostly the "É" in the name.

Verdict: imagine a bitter Aquarius, kinda like Schweppes but not carbonated. Not great, but not terrible either.

  19. Things I will never understand with neither Anglos nor Japanese people: having job-related events (like talks, etc) on weekends or meetings at lunch time.

When I'm suggested a meeting during lunch time, my answer is a clear, plain and simple "hell no!" (also, I'm not available during lunch break, even if I'm very obviously in my office).

  20. There are some slaps in the face that hurt more than some others.
There is this nice little restaurant near campus. I often go. It's owned by a couple. My wife is friends with the woman. Their son is my daughter's age, they go to the same school, even were in the same class when younger. I walked by it this evening, I casually glazed at the posters they often have on their window and... one of them was for the Sanseito!!! WTF?!?!?

  21. Claims Built on Fraudulent Trials Should Be Ignored

By David Tuller, DrPH When researchers cite fraudulent studies in support of their claims, it is best not to take anything they write at face value. That is certainly the case with a recent paper titled “Persistent physical symptoms not explained by structural abnormalities or disease processes: a primary care approach to promote recovery,” published earlier this month in the Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care. (I use “fraudulent” here not in the legal sense but in the sense of “deceptive” or “deceitful.”) As evidence of something or other, the paper’s references include both the fraudulent PACE trial, whose reported findings have been discredited and rejected by leading medical authorities, and a fraudulent pediatric trial of the Lightning Process, in which the investigators violated core methodological principles of scientific research. (The Lightning Process, a woo-woo “brain retraining” program, was created by osteopath and former spiritual healer Phil Parker, who once claimed to be able to diagnose people’s ailments by stepping into their bodies for a look-see.) The Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care has emerged as something of a house organ for members of the biopsychosocial ideological brigades, including prominent non-Nordic fellow travelers like Professor Paul Garner and Professor Trudie Chalder. (The former is the corresponding author of this paper; the latter is one of multiple co-authors.) Both were also co-authors of a similarly misguided document published by the same journal In 2023–a manifesto from the self-styled Oslo Chronic Fatigue Consortium called “Chronic fatigue syndromes: real illnesses that people can recover from.” The new paper’s goal is to offer primary care physicians a short summary of “contemporary theories of PPS” along with purported “evidence-informed pathways” for treating patients. The research involved a “narrative literature review and consensus development with experienced practitioners.” In other words, the paper presents the beliefs, opinions and …

  23. A couple of critters from around camp.

The camp Kookaburras know about people and hang around in the hopes of stealing a sausage or something.

And this morning, I found this female Red-necked Wallaby (with joey in pouch).

  25. I dunno how it feels that only after getting removed as #Megaplex staff for not having the right "everything and everyone is fine as is, change is bad" attitude ig, I finally work on my own furry projects again.

This includes fursuit head making, drawing, and coding up two furry related apps!

  26. And now there's a male (yep, very much a male) Swamp Wallaby in the backyard in the afternoon sun.

Not that usual to see them at this time of day.

The yard has been recently mowed so it was eating the ferns instead (and the odd long grass amongst the ferns).

  28. The #Aurora forecast for last night was good enough that I took a punt on going out to photograph it.

I live in south east Queensland, which is around the 28º latitude and thus far too close to the tropics to usually get aurora, but the 1.5 hr drive to a darkish area west of Brisbane proved worth it.

As aurora photos go, these are fairly tame, but for the location, I'm extremely happy with having got this much.

  29. But the thing that intrigued me was this bird that was flying in a stationary way looking down (for fish? it was high tide)
It's clearly not a black kite. I don't think it's the first time I see it, but I really don't know the species. If anyone knows, I'm all ears.

Edit: It seems that it's an osprey. Thanks everyone.
