✨😇A SLICE OF PARADISE🪷🎶
Byōdō-in's ( 平等院) Hōō-dō (鳳凰堂 'Phoenix Hall') was completed in 1053. Once completely surrounded by Aji-ga-ike pond, the stretch of water helped protect the building from fires in 1336 and 1483 that completely destroyed the rest of the temple.

#Uji #Byodoin -
For a long time it was believed that crape myrtles had been imported to Japan from the mainland some time in the Edo period, but recently pollen was discovered in the pond bed at Byōdō-in (平等院) that confirmed trees were growing here before the temple (completed in 1052)!😮

In June this year two more Pokémon manhole covers appeared in Uji, the home of matcha in Japan.
Both are within easy walking distance of the Keihan Uji Station (and not particularly far from the JR Uji Station). -

We visited the the Byodo-In Temple in Hawaii back in late (New Years) 2023. It was peaceful, and a welcome change from city life.
I made sure to take a little souvenir with me: A Crane. I can't help but think of Blade Runner every time I see it. It's a reminder to slow down time a little.

After Michinaga passed away in 1027 the 'Uji Palace' (宇治殿) came into possession of his son Yorimichi (藤原頼通 992–1074).
When Yorimichi turned 60 years old he was inspired to transform the sprawling site into a temple, and made the priest Myōson (明尊 971-1063) first abbot.

Likely beginning as a summer retreat for Minamoto-no-Tōru (源融 822-95), the man who possibly inspired Murasaki Shikibu's "Hikaru Genji", the property passed through the hands of Emperor Uda, Minamoto-no-Shigenobu (源重信 - Uda's grandson), and on to the powerful Regent Fujiwara-no-Michinaga.

Born at the villa, it seems probable that Murasaki spent most of her life (even when married) at the house.
Standing to the west of the Kamo River, 'Tsutsumi-tei' would have been constructed in the 'palatial style' (寝殿造 'shinden-zukuri') within a sprawling pond garden.
Directly to the south stood Fujiwara-no-Michinaga's magnificent Hōjō-ji (法成寺), similar in design to Byōdō-in.

temple dog
花ちるや称名うなる寺の犬
-Kobayashi Issa (小林一茶), 1810.
Trans. David Lanoue. There's been a trellis at Byōdō-in (平等院) for more than 250 years, supporting a huge wisteria (surely one of the city's most photographed).

Before the 'Phoenix Hall' (officially known as the Amida-dō, and commonly called this right up to 1680) is a stone lantern that has survived since the temple's foundation.
At the height of its power Byōdō-in's precincts boasted 26 halls, 7 pagodas, and an elaborate garden.
