  12. It's #HoPWaG time again! Today we look at the theme of "wandering" in the Zhuangzi, comparing this to Thomas Nagel's idea of "philosophical absurdity." www.historyofphilosophy.net/zhuangzi-wan... #philsky #philosophy #podcasts #daoism #zhuangzi

  13. www.historyofphilosophy.net/zhuangzi-death Time for a new #HoPWaG episode! Today we tackle the many passages in the Daoist classic, the Zhuangzi, that deal with death - including the famous "dreaming you are a butterfly" passage. #daoism #zhuangzi #philsky #philosophy #podcasts

  14. Finished reading this on the train today, and it's a fun and interesting book. I have a soft spot for Zhuangzi's happy fish, and so this was up my street. It's also open access, putting the "free" into "free and easy wandering" (逍遙遊)

    So lovely.

Sewing is an alien art for me, I envy you. I won't start now, but I see this as a wonderful Taoist case study!

Let the material decide how it wants to be treated. The knot is my external will, clumsily imposed on the thread; the friction loop is the inner nature of the thread, gracefully doing what it does, skillfully aligned with my needs.

    I love the drawing too!

  23. The old man put down his pipe and spoke.

Life is short, he said, it passes by one day at a time, without fanfare, and then suddenly we realise it's all gone. I wish I could meet my younger self and beat some sense into the careless young man I then was.

What would you say to him?

Get enough sleep. Eat well. Always have some chicken stock in the fridge. That sort of thing.

He picked up his pipe and took a few gentle puffs.

"The sage leans on the sun and moon, tucks the universe under his arm, merges himself with things, leaves the confusion and muddle as it is, and looks on slaves as exalted. Ordinary men strain and struggle; the sage is stupid and blockish. He takes part in ten thousand ages and achieves simplicity in oneness. For him, all the ten thousand things are what they are, and thus they enfold each other."

    #Zhuangzi chapter 2, Watson trans.

  30. Tzu-yu said, "By the piping of earth, then, you mean simply [the sound of] these hollows, and by the piping of man [the sound of] flutes and whistles. But may I ask about the piping of Heaven?"

Tzu-ch'i said, "Blowing on the ten thousand things in a different way, so that each can be itself - all take what they want for themselves, but who does the sounding?"

  31. 3/ Which of these four 'knows' what is rightly alluring? From where I see it, all the sproutings of humankindness and responsible conduct and all the trails of right and wrong are hopelessly tangled and confused. How could I know how to distinguish and demonstrate any conclusions about them?”

    #Zhuangzi (Ziporyn translation)

  32. 3/ So in all our travels we can never really know where we are going, in all our dwellings we can never really know what is maintaining us, in all our eating we can never really know what we are tasting. This is all the bright and vigorous energy of heaven and earth—how could it be obtained and possessed?"

    #Zhuangzi (Ziporyn translation)

I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Zhou. Soon I awakened, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man." - #Zhuangzi, Ch 2 tr Burton Watson

Sheep's Groom couples with bamboo that has not sprouted for a long while and produces Green Peace plants. Green Peace plants produce leopards and leopards produce horses and horses produce men. Men in time return again to the mysterious workings. So all creatures come out of the mysterious workings and go back into them again."

  41. CW: Autumn Floods 2/2

"I have heard there is a sacred turtle in Chu, already dead for three thousand years, which the king keeps in a bamboo chest high in his shrine. Do you think this turtle would prefer to be dead and having his carcass exalted, or alive and dragging his tail through the mud?" The emissaries said, "Alive and dragging his tail through the mud." Zhuangzi said, "Away with you then! I too will drag my tail through the mud!"

Though I can’t access the experience of mushroom selfhood or butterfly selfhood—I can’t know what it’s like to be those people—there is some relationship between the mushroom and me, the butterfly and me, some common rouser or piper that pipes 'puhpowee' in the night and creates the conditions for all of our selves to emerge, however different they are from each other.
