EDNA STAEBLER’S FOOD THAT REALLY SCHMECKS
Edna Staebler’s Food That Really Schmecks is a collection of anecdotes and recipes for all to enjoy.
Published in 1968, the book takes the readers on a journey through ‘city’ recipes that she grew up with, made by Staebler’s mother and a friend, Bevvy, from the Mennonite community, as well as through a moment in local history.
It also includes a few recipes from people she […]

Learning About Preserving Strawberry Freshness
I came across a blog post by Chris Glass titled Strawberries were on sale. Having not long ago published an article about once purchasing out-of-season cherries on sale. I had to open. While Mr. Glass’ post came as advertised, I found a tip. After purchasing his for-sale strawberries, he soaked them in one part white vinegar and three parts water for 10 minutes to “extend their freshness.” I have found that the appearance of strawberries deteriorates quickly, so I will have to study […]https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/learning-about-preserving-strawberry-freshness-05-07-26/

New Victor V. Gurbo Podcast Interview
My good friend Victor V. Gurbo (who has written some articles for NLJ) was interviewed by Charles Zona for an episode of Seeing Them Live With Charles Zona. I read the interview transcript, but you can listen to the full 1 hour podcast if you prefer listening to reading. Victor covers many topics, beginning with his childhood memories of seeing live music for the first time and concluding with some notes about his current music projects. In between, you will hear some stories I recall from […]https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/new-victor-v-gurbo-podcast-interview-04-17-26/

NO KINGS: Not Alone!
This past Saturday, I and about 40,000 other Philadelphians amassed at Ben Franklin Parkway here in Philadelphia for the 3rd No Kings Rally. Though I wanted to attend the first two, held in June and October of 2025, prior commitments prevented me from doing so. This time around, I was in town and available, so there was no way I was going to miss it. I wasn't sure what to expect at the rally, but what I experienced that day was something I didn't even realize I needed... The deeper I get into thinking about this essay, the more I realise my perspective as an outsider drew me to it and shapes it.

As a management consultant, I was often cautioned not to ask 'that' question, or at least not to 'that' executive. Stop telling them they have no strategy when they say they have one.

Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn (2021 and 2026)
At about 4:00 PM on March 12, 2026, a friend of mine who lines nearby in Brooklyn sent me a message on Delta Chat: it's snowing. I turned my head to the right to look out my window. Indeed, it was snowing. The snow would stop and start again. As of 5:12 PM, it is not snowing. This snow in March reminded me of an article I published on NLJ five years ago titled A Brief Mid-March Snow in Brooklyn. Then, like today, snow unexpectedly fell from the sky in March. Unusually Sober Commentary From Dmitry Medvedev

We're not crazy. Dmitry Medvedev My first thought when reading this was that Mr. Medvedev sounds unusually sober here. Nostalgic News: Sega 32X Virtua Racing Has Been Decompiled

https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/christmas-eve-colon-memories-12-24-25/Today is Christmas Eve. This brings back a special memory for me. Seven years to the day, I had surgery to remove 8 inches of my colon on this festive day (I was discharged on the Friday the 28th of 2018). While all was well in the end, I do appreciate spending Christmas Eve at home instead of at NYU Langone in Manhattan (although I will note my room had a 75-inch TV so that was cool). I did get some good gaming done while I was recovering. See my references to playing Pokémon Trading Card Game and Mario Party (the original) in that period.
