  1. Virtual Event - #BookDiscussion of “The #Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World”

    February 12 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

"Join us for a virtual book discussion of 'The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World,' by #RobinWallKimmerer.

    Free. Registration Required."

    About the author:
"As Indigenous scientist and author of #BraidingSweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from #IndigenousWisdom and the plant world to #reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, #interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth—its abundance of sweet, juicy berries—to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution ensures its own survival. As Kimmerer explains, 'Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.' "

  5. Wow, Robin Wall Kimmerer on the Time Magazine list of the 100 Most Influential People in 2025! I see that this news is actually a bit old already, but I had missed it. This is such #goodnews ! Her book Braiding Sweetgrass was the main inspiration for my most performed musical work this year, I named my piece "Becoming Indigenous" after one of the chapters in her book. Her message should be spread everywhere #Robinwallkimmerer #environmental #nature #braidingsweetgrass

  7. Kimmerer’s reminder lands softly but precisely: restoration is empty without relationship. What lasts is the reciprocity we build with place — the ongoing, living exchange that outlives any single intervention.

  11. haha

    kaveri valitti siitepölystä

    siite-- hehe 😁🌾👋

kirjasta braiding sweetgrass, robin wall kimmerer

  14. #ClimateDiary

“I cannot express how eerie it is to be collecting maple sap in early March and there not being any snow covering the forest floor. I’ve NEVER seen this before” (Ryan Katz-Rosene)

Reminded of Kimmerer on maple syrup in #BraidingSweetgrass. That “forever”practices are having to change is something to process in itself; but maybe change and adaptation are part of their foreverness. At any rate: people doing them are everywhere the most astute observers of #ClimateChange

  16. we've been pretty inconsiderate guests, he meant

    elämä on lahja

    life is a gift

and even tho it is given without asking, one needs to honor the gift

one is not free from reciprocality

(i learnt this from #braidingSweetgrass, and from some other book about native american history. everything is relations.)

    lahjan saaminen sitoo sen saajaa

  17. 🧵 Unbelievable: Robin Wall Kimmerer's gorgeous book "Braiding Sweetgrass" was published 10 years ago. Unlike other global bestsellers, the book has changed people, woken them up and inspired them to take action. Rosanne Deerchild talks with the author in her podcast Unreserved:

  19. For #indigenousPeoplesDay i would also like to share this passage from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s #BraidingSweetgrass. I read it a few days ago and keep on thinking about #SpeciesLoneliness - such a powerful, important concept. Modern life has made us species lonely, we do not know the names of plants and animals around us anymore

  21. "The question of goldenrod and asters was of course just emblematic of what I really wanted to know. It was an architecture of relationships, of connections that I yearned to understand. I wanted to see the shimmering threads that hold it all together. And I wanted to know why we love the world, why the most ordinary scrap of meadow can rock us back on our heels in awe."

  23. Though I can’t access the experience of mushroom selfhood or butterfly selfhood—I can’t know what it’s like to be those people—there is some relationship between the mushroom and me, the butterfly and me, some common rouser or piper that pipes 'puhpowee' in the night and creates the conditions for all of our selves to emerge, however different they are from each other.

  25. 1/ I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but whenever I read a new book I'm always thinking about ways it connects or relates to all the other books I've read.

Naturally, because I tend to reread a lot of the same things (like #Thoreau and #Zhuangzi) I tend to more easily find connections between new books and those more familiar ones.

When I first read #BraidingSweetgrass a few years ago I immediately felt many, many connections to both.

  27. I know this is the *ideal* time to post a nearly 4000 word blog post on selfhood, identity, fungi, and butterflies. Who doesn't want to spend their Friday night reading long personal musings about Daoism and indigenous knowledge???

  31. #Gather is a beautiful and sometimes challenging documentary with a great deal of hope. If you liked the book #BraidingSweetgrass, you’ll like this. If neither is known to you, then you’ve got two excellent works to enjoy. gather.film/

  32. I've just finished reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. It was very deep, and thought provoking. It was quite a slow read, due to the subject matter, and also the small type face 🤣

    I could only read a chapter a
    night.

Next up is The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune.

  33. The source of all this is I'd like to make a craft to depict the rules of the honorable harvest, as expressed in Robin Wall Kimmerer's #BraidingSweetgrass.

I can't carve this many letters, it seems wrong to woodburn, and I don't want to cross-stitch it... So! Calligraphy and linocut.
