  1. A quotation from Tolstoy

Memento mori — remember death! These are important words. If we kept in mind that we will soon inevitably die, our lives would be completely different. If a person knows that he will die in a half hour, he certainly will not bother doing trivial, stupid, or, especially, bad things during this half hour. Perhaps you have half a century before you die — what makes this any different from a half hour?

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) Russian novelist and moral philosopher
Path of Life [Calendar of Wisdom; Круг чтения], ch. 21 “Living in the Present,” sec. 5.12 (1903-1911) [(tr. Cote (2002)]

  5. As Tolstoy suggests, our dietary choices are deeply intertwined with our moral evolution. Choosing a vegan lifestyle is about aligning our daily actions with a higher standard of ethics and non-violence. 🙏 #tolstoy #inspirationalquotes #enlightenment

  6. For all of her ghastly faults, Constance Garnett's translations of #Tolstoy include comically frequent repetition of the phrase "hateful and loathsome."

That's it. That's the post. It's already in the public domain, but here I give it to you anyway:

    "Hateful and loathsome."

  7. “Tolstoy, who spoiled much of his work by argumentative moralizing, tells us in What Is Art? that ‘the business of art lies just in this: to make that understood and felt which in the form of an argument might be incomprehensible and inaccessible.’”

    — Bertram Brooker (1936)

  8. @CFord noted

#alttext "Patriotism in its simplest, clearest, and most indubitable meaning is nothing but an instrument for the attainment of the government's ambitious and mercenary aims, and a renunciation of human dignity, common sense, and conscience by the governed, a slavish submission to those who hold power. Patriotism is #slavery.

Leo #Tolstoy "The kingdom of God: and peace essays"

Or, as Mark #Twain said: (#Patriotism is) 'The last refuge of scoundrels'.

  9. The #Aussie giving War & Peace a 'bogan' remake

"Just then, Prince Andrei rocked up to Anna's joint. He was the pregnant sheila's hubby. Like his missus, he was pretty good looking himself."

Those lines are straight from a new translation of Leo #Tolstoy's epic novel #WarandPeace, set in the world of Russian high society in the early 19th century.

Except this is a "bogan" version translated by #AnderLouis, the pen name of a Melbourne IT worker who moonlights as a writer.

He's poured a metaphorical can of Australian beer over the novel by converting Tolstoy's prose into a lingo that wouldn't sound out of place in the popular Aussie sitcom Kath & Kim.

  10. 2 “ … the #novel of illusionistic #realism, inherited from #Defoe, #Richardson, #Austen, #Flaubert, #Tolstoy and so on – is at best badly suited to thinking about #climatechange, and at worst an active participant in ‘a concealment of the real’.”

  12. Big #Tolstoy fan, just read "The Kreutzer Sonata," and ... blechhh

Actually my Tolstoy fandom is now thirty-odd years old now, and may have exceeded its shelf-life.

Could be midlife, could be the current world, could be mood.

Or it could be that Tolstoy was (in) a super uptight pervert (phase when he wrote it)?

  13. Today is #Tolstoy's birthday. His #politicalthought is radical, #anarcho-#pacifist & #iconoclastic. Here's my book on it: sites.google.com/site/christoy

    Core chapters explore T’s
    #pacifism, #anarchism,
    #anticlericalism, #asceticism &
#nonviolent #activism. Each time first systematising T (with plenty of poignant quotes), then discussing criticisms of his views, then reflecting on relevance since.

  17. #Tolstoy may have had the right of it all along:
“A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor — such is my idea of happiness.”

  18. 🇺🇦 pushed the occupiers back in #Tolstoy & #Novomykhailivka, where 🇷🇺 had previously been making slow advances

🇺🇦 destroyed 🇷🇺 bases at Khersones Airfield in occupied #Crimea

🇺🇦 hit the #Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in #Rostov, one of the largest 🇷🇺 suppliers to its army

🇷🇺 advanced near Serebryanka & Olhivske

🇷🇺 lost over 13% of its oil refining capacity due to 🇺🇦 drone strikes

    🇺🇦 now produces 3,000 long-range FP-1 #drones per month, matching 🇷🇺 Shahed production

🇪🇺 provides €4.05 billion in aid to 🇺🇦

20 Aug 2015 Scott criticises #GeorgeOrwell's cynicism on ABC:

"He was very very hostile, and I think needlessly hostile it seems to me, to the idea of the saint, and so he wrote ferociously, it seems to me libellously, about #Tolstoy after his conversion to orthodoxy, and also about #Ghandi, saying that saints should be judged as guilty until otherwise proven innocent."

    Really Scott?
