  1. The #SteamController has a fun easter egg: it will shout the #WilhelmScream if you drop it. I think it's cool, but what I find even cooler is that the controller does not have an speaker, so apparently they are doing it with the vibration motors! youtube.com/watch?v=tw5Luf_7F8

  5. Thinking about the Wilhelm scream and how the one in Dante's Peak makes me angry.
If the character had been one of those annoying antagonists you get in disaster films who always thinks they are right until they get their comeuppance, then it would have been fine.
But in this he's just doing his job, and admits he's wrong and dies just because he's driving the van. His death is tragic but it could have easily been silent, without the goofy sound.

  6. They did use CGI to remove the reflection of the snake from #RaidersOfTheLostArk. Which kind of makes it less enjoyable as a viewing experience. Imagine if they'd remove the #WilhelmScream because it sounds fake.

  7. Wooaaah, I forgot how mean #AnnaKendrick is to Bella when she asks them all to go and see a film.

    MEAN ANNA!

  8. CW: nerdy cinematic ramblings

  9. Looks like the story about the ‘Wilhelm Scream’ is making the rounds and I found an ad free blog with video, references and everything you can find on paywalled news sites. Plus it’s a neat story and as an Elder Scrolls fan, the fact that it originated by taking an arrow to the knee is a cherry on top.

  10. And if you manage to scream a half-decent imitation of the #WilhelmScream at this @internetarchive blogpost, you'll unlock a special Easter Egg high-res download of the sound library*.

    (* I speak in jest.)

Still, the Wilhelm Scream is part of our sound heritage:

  11. #Bales2023FilmChallenge April 24: Screaming!! on #ScreamDay

One joyous day, Pvt. Wilhelm gave his dear life for movie geeks everywhere. The Gary Cooper (super duper!) #western Distant Drums (1951) is the origin of what's known as the Wilhelm scream. During a dramatic action scene, our dearly beloved private is hit in the thigh with an arrow. The bloodcurdling #scream was part of a sounds effect reel voiced by Sheb Wooley, known better for his 1958 rock n rolll novelty song “The Purple People Eater” than fighting off hostile natives. Later, other screamers popped up in anything from A Star Is Born (1954) to Reservoir Dogs (1992). And yes, even a long time ago. In a galaxy far far away.

  12. Craig Smith writes about his preservation efforts for the the Sunset Editorial Sound Effects Library from the USC Archive- these sound effects come from the Sunset Editorial collection which was donated to USC Cinema in 1990. They include the original recording of the Wilhelm scream (the original is playable and linked in the article)!

From the article: "Sunset Editorial had a low-key history in Hollywood. Not a lot is known about them. This is because their credits in films were usually just 'Sound Effects — Sunset Editorial'. The company was active from about 1964 to 1987."

Sunset mainly provided sound effects for TV shows, and the sound effects were reused.

Smith also shows/describes the painstaking restoration process for the old tapes.

    Amazing stuff.
