Can anyone recommend libraries of stock sound effects (free or cheap) for making games with a mid to late 90s aesthetic?
Anything with sounds that were used in popular or multiple games, and as such recognizable, would be especially interesting.
Big archives with a wide range of sounds to browse through quickly to start building a collection of favorites would be very useful to me.

@itsfoss The thing is I'm not sure how to call those myself. By "buffered" part I mean that #SoundEffect is preloaded into memory, there is a good indication of when the sound starts and it can be replayed on top of itself. It *sounds* like a #soundboard, but all I really need is a #SFX player for arbitrary files, preferrably loaded in a batch.

Hello, @itsfoss! Any recommendation for buffered #SoundEffects player (not soundboard)?
All these "simple" audio players have a crippling delay at the start of every file operation and don't repeat the sound on demand, so I've had a struggle finding one player that would be nice to short #SFX.
Extra points if it can handle multiple files open (keep each #SoundEffect in memory for fast play).

While on the recommendations tip, here's another one, but for your #SoundEffect library: "Junkyard Metal" by Pole Position.
I'm curating through it to include in my lib atm, and it's plain fine a source recording type of lib as it gets. None of 'designed' etc. type fluff - just full on multi-angle mics, with a ton of actions (rattle, roll, scrape etc.) and variations. Sanken CO100k included in mic selection, recordings in 192kHz 🤩🔥

One joyous day, Pvt. Wilhelm gave his dear life for movie geeks everywhere. The Gary Cooper (super duper!) #western Distant Drums (1951) is the origin of what's known as the Wilhelm scream. During a dramatic action scene, our dearly beloved private is hit in the thigh with an arrow. The bloodcurdling #scream was part of a sounds effect reel voiced by Sheb Wooley, known better for his 1958 rock n rolll novelty song “The Purple People Eater” than fighting off hostile natives. Later, other screamers popped up in anything from A Star Is Born (1954) to Reservoir Dogs (1992). And yes, even a long time ago. In a galaxy far far away.

Another cool sound I found on freesound.org today, this time courtesy of the user Baelphazoar!
This one is a nice long recording of the internal PA system of an American M1A1 Abrams main battle tank during a gunnery exercise in Germany. It includes crew talk, weapons fire, and engine noises. Very educational I think!
