Craig Smith writes about his preservation efforts for the the Sunset Editorial Sound Effects Library from the USC Archive- these sound effects come from the Sunset Editorial collection which was donated to USC Cinema in 1990. They include the original recording of the Wilhelm scream (the original is playable and linked in the article)!

    From the article: "Sunset Editorial had a low-key history in Hollywood. Not a lot is known about them. This is because their credits in films were usually just 'Sound Effects β€” Sunset Editorial'. The company was active from about 1964 to 1987."

    Sunset mainly provided sound effects for TV shows, and the sound effects were reused.

    Smith also shows/describes the painstaking restoration process for the old tapes.

    Amazing stuff.
