The Mint, the biggest name in the global market for investment gold coins, is an example of how the industry’s guardrails have collapsed. Gold prices hover around $5,000 an ounce, about four times the price of a decade ago. That gives criminal organizations and fly-by-night operators a huge incentive to mine in wasteful, destructive and risky ways.
Investors buy gold as a hedge against instability. Nearly every terrorist attack, war and financial meltdown in the past quarter-century has fueled a gold-buying frenzy.
But as prices climb ever higher, wealthy buyers are actually helping to create the very instability they are trying to hedge against.
Gold mining funds Sudan’s brutal civil war and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Surging gold prices have helped Venezuela and Iran temper the effects of financial sanctions. Colombia’s biggest cartel, the Clan del Golfo, traffics in gold alongside cocaine — and uses the proceeds to maintain control through murder and bombings. Illegal miners deforest and pollute the Amazon, poisoning people there with mercury. Terrorist groups, including some linked to Al Qaeda, are getting into the gold business, too."

This was discussed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the conversation was featured on the Mint's official YouTube channel. In it, members of the non-partisan design committee were critical of the idea, with acting chair Donald Scarinci saying: "Only those nations ruled by kings or dictators display the image of their sitting ruler on the coins of the realm." Now, Marisa Kabas of the Handbasket says the video has been taken down. "The larger message is loud and clear: Dissent will not be tolerated," she writes.

Aquilino Gonell, who was injured by the mob on Jan. 6, told NBC News that he tried to purchase a number of the replica medals this week, planning to hand them out as gifts, and was surprised to see they were no longer available." US Congress has considered, but not passed, at least one bill [1] to stop making the penny. That Congress has decided to NOT stop making the penny implies Congress WANTS to keep making the penny. If Congress changed its mind, it can pass a new bill at any time.

The first coin minted by the US was actually a cookie
It looks delicious, but it tastes terrible.
(By US federal government, source.)Today, The Daily Isotope learned that the first coin that was minted by the US government was actually a cookie made of chocolate-flavored dough with a creamy center. It was designed by a baker named Oreo John Hydrox. It was designed this way to allow people to separate the cookie into two halves. Thus, if needed, they could pay in a faction of a coin.
As you may have guessed, the Hydrox cookie was later an evolution of this design. The company and the cookie were named to honor the original designer of the coin. A few years later, a competitor emerged, Oreo. They used the Hydrox cookie as their basis, and they also named their company to honor the original designer. A third company, named John, was also launched later, but it quickly ceased operation, mainly due to its nondescript name.
Contemporaneous sources tell us this coin tasted “like ass.” The editorial room at The Daily Isotope is divided whether this is a good, or a bad thing. At any rate, the design of the coin was a tad messy as it would attract bugs, and it ended up being scrapped in favor of coins make of solid milk chocolate. This design was quickly scrapped, too, when people realized that the coins would melt in their pockets.

There are some really nice Harriet Tubman coins being sold by the #USMint though. I have bought a few and also given some as gifts.
