Happy Presidents’ Day (2026)!
I have been busy lately. For that reason I did not have time to do anything special for President's Day. I present a quote from an article I wrote about an interesting passage from the Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge: As I looked on him and realized that he personally represented the glory and dignity of the United States I wondered how it felt to bear so much responsibility and little thought I should ever know. Calvin Coolidge reflecting on seeing then-President Benjamin […]https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/happy-presidents-day-2026-02-16-26/

On November 25, 2025, President Donald Trump proclaimed that November 27, 2025, would be a National Day of Thanksgiving. From the start of the Proclamation:
In 1789, just years after America’s triumph over tyranny in the Revolutionary War, President George Washington established the first National Day of Thanksgiving, declaring ‘the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.’
President Donald Trump, 2025 Thanksgiving Proclamation
President Trump led off the 2025 Thanksgiving Proclamation by quoting from George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation. I published an article on the subject of Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation back on November 25, 2020 (the first year of The New Leaf Journal). President Trump continued to quote from Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation (I should write an article about that one next year), which is the first (so to speak) modern Proclamation. For further Thanksgiving proclamation reading, see my articles on Calvin Coolidge’s 1923 Thanksgiving Proclamation and Presidential Proclamations of Thanksgiving in the Philippines.

[14:18] Senan Molony: US friendship has had many benefits – but who were the five most important American presidents for Ireland?
It was just over a century ago that Ambassador Timothy Smiddy presented his credentials to US president Calvin Coolidge, marking the beginning of Ireland’s first official diplomatic relationship with any state.

#OTD 1919 Mass Gov #CalvinCoolidge called in the #NationalGuard to put down a contentious #BostonPD strike. As crime ran rampant in city, the soldiers used #MachineGuns on crowds, and killed near a dozen.
All 1,100 cop participants in the police #strike were fired, and #unemployed WWI #veterans replaced them. Ironically, they got higher salaries and more off-days than the fired striking cops asked for.
Coolidge's cool refusal to capitulate to #OrganizedLabor #unions made him a #ConservativeIcon and primed him for a winning #presidential run in 1920.
#RonaldReagan revered Coolidge and fired the striking #AirTrafficControllers in the 1980's near a Coolidge portrait hung prominently in the #WhiteHouse.

My favorite VP story was Calvin Coolidge was back home visiting his father when he heard that President Warren G Harding had died.
Being rural Vermont, the only phone in town was the general store. The storekeeper went to notify. They woke up Cal, and his father, a judge, swore him in by candlelight.
Having just sworn in as POTUS, Cal went back to sleep. No big deal
