  1. Shlain and Goldberg have spent the past few years tracing history through the rings of massive, reclaimed tree rings. As the Jewish festival of the trees Tu BiShvat approaches, they reflected on other histories trees could have witnessed, etching the historical and contemporary questions that have catalyzed the quest for knowledge into the tree rings.

Their pieces are exhibited in Getty’s PST Art & Science Collide exhibition at the Skirball Cultural Center: Ancient Wisdom for a Future Ecology: Trees, Time & Technology which has special events on Feb 2. Their art will also be featured during Frieze Art Fair.

  6. It's time to start thinking about what you'll be doing for Tu B'Shvat.

Time flies, doesn't it? Spring will be here before you know it.

Lots of organizations will be having in person and online events, so look around and find one that's a good fit for you.

  10. From Sefaria.org:

While much of the world is deep in winter, Tu Bishvat comes as a reminder of the promise of spring and hope for the future. Wherever you are in the world, we hope this new year of the trees is filled with inspired learning (and delicious fruit).

Curious to dig into the meaning of the holiday but not sure where to start? Get introduced to a variety of classic and lesser-known sources with our guided Tu Bishvat topic page.

    Happy Tu Bishvat,

    Team Sefaria

  15. /sh-‘vat/ שְׁבָט reminds us of the deep connection between our lives and the natural world. ט”ו בִּשְׁבָט /too bee-sh-‘vat/, sometimes referred to as the “Jewish Arbor Day”, is marked by planting trees and eating fruits and grains typical of the Land of Israel.

Shvat also carries historical significance. It was in this month that Moses began his final speech to the Israelites, as recounted in the Book of Deuteronomy.

  30. @jewwhohasitall The first one, in the pot, is an etrog. It’s the last one standing after I planted four seeds some years back. The lovely fuchsia one is a saucer magnolia #tree I planted because I knew it would bloom around #TuBShvat, and it did!
