"The Department of Government Efficiency’s cancellation last year of the majority of ffederal #humanities #grants, including to several #Jewish projects, was #unlawful and #unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled Thursday.
In her 143-page ruling, U.S. District #Judge #ColleenMcMahon called out the agency created by #President #DonaldTrump specifically for its targeting of Jewish projects, including #Holocaust #research.
“At a time when the specter of #antisemitism has reemerged from the shadows, for our Government to deem a project about #Jewishwomen disfavored because it centered on ‘Jewish cultures’ and ‘female’ voices is deeply troubling,” wrote #McMahon, who was appointed by President #BillClinton in 1998. She was referring specifically to a canceled “project on Jewish #women subjected to slave labor during the Holocaust.”

"In the 1970s, in the wake of an emerging #secondwave #feminism, #women’s #magazines were expanding rapidly with a unique style. Their focus, however, tended to exclude #minorities. #Jewish women were seen as privileged “others”, not facing the same constraints as their #gentile peers. "The story of Sarah and Hagar is often told as a tale of rivalry and cruelty—but a closer look reveals a far richer story, hinting at a complex, powerful, and spiritually resonant relationship between two extraordinary women.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the story through text study, discussion, and writing prompts, uncovering new possibilities for understanding female relationships, motherhood, and feminine archetypes. Together, we’ll re-examine these matriarchs to discover strength, wisdom, and inspiration for our own lives."Link: https://ritualwell.org/event/sarah-and-hagar-uncovering-feminine-strength-and-wisdom/2026-03-24/

Jewish immigrant men abandoned their wives in droves a century ago. Their stories are getting a new look
By Luke Tress June 14, 2024"...The issue of abandonment was widespread in the immigrant world of early 1900s New York, common enough that well-known psychics...specialized in divining the whereabouts of missing men. Reasons for leaving families varied, but the most common appeared to be other women. Other reasons recorded by the bureau include criminality, “influence of bad friends,” “Broadway high life,” “to evade military service” and “did not like Baltimore.” Sometimes women left their husbands due to “cruelty” or “barbarity,” a euphemism for domestic violence...
A common denominator among all the cases: the hardship of arriving in a new country. Many immigrants lived in cramped tenement apartments with their families, working long hours, six days a week, and divorce was expensive..."

Josephine Sarah "Sadie" Earp (née Marcus; 1861 – 1944)
She was the wife of Wyatt Earp the famed Old West lawman. She met Wyatt in 1881 in the frontier town of Tombstone, Arizona, when she was living with Johnny Behan, sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona. She left Behan, who was nearly twice her age, in 1881, before the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. She returned to San Francisco in March 1882 and was joined that fall by Wyatt, with whom she remained for 46 years until his death in 1929. Josephine Earp had his body cremated and buried him in the Marcus family plot in a Jewish cemetery
Josephine Marcus was born in New York to a Jewish family. They moved to San Francisco, where she attended dance school as a girl. She ran away as a young teen traveling to Arizona looking for adventure. Sadie kept this period of her life a secret but there js evidence that she may have been forced to work as a prostitute under the name Sadie Mansfield. She described this period as 'A bad dream'.
The book I Married Wyatt Earp (1967), is based on a manuscript allegedly written in part by her.

From Lilith:
Each month, Jewish tradition gives us the opportunity to pause, reflect, and set intentions through the celebration of Rosh Chodesh, which marks the arrival of the New Moon. This week, we welcome the Hebrew month of Iyar alongside the secular month of May. As this new month begins, we feel ourselves beginning to thaw—emerging from a winter of discouraging, fear-inducing news headlines and turning once again toward community, care, and connection.
Lilith invites you to seek renewal with us this weekend—in the moon, in each other, and in the pages of independent Jewish feminist journalism.

It’s a Christian Saint’s Day. It worships commercialization. And it definitely objectifies women. It’s time to say dayenu to embracing the golden calf of heart-shaped chocolate boxes filled with mediocre heart-shaped chocolate and instead find new ways to spend Valentine’s Day. Here are some alternatives.

Enlightening and powerful, The Things We Don’t Say: An Anthology of Chronic Illness Truths, chronicles some of her experiences alongside essays from a diverse group of people from around the world living with chronic illness. "In our culture that conflates value and ability, it is easy to find yourself somewhere along the post-viral spectrum. It is easy to push, or be pushed, or (more likely) some combination of the two, into ignoring your body, assigning some valence of alternate logic to your racing heart, low cortisol, persistent fatigue, or evergreen throat pain.

Shlain and Goldberg have spent the past few years tracing history through the rings of massive, reclaimed tree rings. As the Jewish festival of the trees Tu BiShvat approaches, they reflected on other histories trees could have witnessed, etching the historical and contemporary questions that have catalyzed the quest for knowledge into the tree rings.
Their pieces are exhibited in Getty’s PST Art & Science Collide exhibition at the Skirball Cultural Center: Ancient Wisdom for a Future Ecology: Trees, Time & Technology which has special events on Feb 2. Their art will also be featured during Frieze Art Fair.

A New Set of Rituals for Abortion and Pregnancy Loss
Naima Hirsch Gelman
February 1, 2024Read the article: https://lilith.org/2024/02/a-new-set-of-rituals-for-abortion-and-pregnancy-loss/
"There is a modern legend that in the early days of women’s ordination as rabbis, a rabbinical school professor stood up and said: “Judaism has a bracha for every single human experience we undergo.” The women in the room—knowing the incredulity of that statement—laughed. Because while it’s true that while Judaism has blessings for after using the bathroom or for hearing thunder, we don’t have that kind of ritual content for the myriad of experiences specific to women..."

A new memoir, ‘The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews,’ explores traumatic teenage years in Hasidic Crown Heights, By Julia Gergely July 8, 2024
"...Rossi told the story of her rise through New York’s culinary scene in the 1980s in her 1st memoir, called “The Raging Skillet,” in 2015:
https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-raging-skillet-the-true-life-story-of-chef-rossi-rossi/10414879
...Her 2nd memoir is more of a prequel than a follow-up. In “The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews,” released earlier this year, Rossi digs into everything that came before: specifically, the two years she lived in Crown Heights as a teenager. The book narrates what she describes as the misogyny, assault & trauma she experienced there. These experiences would shape the rest of her life, inspiring her to become a chef & come out as lesbian:

Threading Stones - An Elul Tradition
July 2 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT
Recurring Event - Tuesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 2024
Course fee is $250
Prepare yourself for Elul and the High Holy Days by learning an ancient tradition, rarely taught by those who have practice in this tradition. For generations, Jewish women in Eastern Europe utilized threads to measure cemeteries and graves. These threads were used to create special soul candles known as neshome likht, or sometimes as protective bands worn on wrists, ankles, or necks. Typically overseen by skilled women called feldmesterins, activities such as feldmestn (cemetery measuring) and kneytlekh leygn (laying wicks) were most prevalent during Elul to prepare soul candles for Yom Kippur.

The Anti-Choice Movement: Bad News For Jews, by Susan Weidman Schneider June 12, 1990
Yes, 1990.
"...The interests of Jews are threatened now because...Jews in particular have a great deal to lose if the wall separating church and state develops any fractures.Jewish law on abortion posits that the life of the mother takes precedence over that of the unborn child. According to halacha...the fetus is potential life only, and its claims are secondary to those of the woman. Halacha regards a fetus as having no...life of its own; life does not begin until birth, and aborting a pregnancy...is not considered murder..."

From Ariele Mortkowitz at SVIVAH:
"...This week I went...to attend a hearing on conflict-related sexual violence & to watch a special screening of the 10/7 documentary, “Screams Before Silence.”
...It’s not enough to just be sad or angry. ...We owe it to all women, everywhere and anywhere women are used as a tool of war. We have to speak up for them. Because they are us. Women victimized in conflict are targeted because they are women. And women are still being victimized today, right now. In Gaza & in so many places around the globe. This isn’t about politics. This is about women standing up for women, for ourselves. To not permit the world to use and abuse women as a tool of war...
So I’m going to ask you to lean in. I will, too. But we have to do something. It’s hard to feel like there’s any way to be useful, but we just have to find something & do it. Some (very) small suggestions..."
