A Very Special Shabbat Shalom Friends 🕯️🕯
One year.
For fifty two weeks, something quiet and beautiful has been happening on my Facebook page. Every Friday I share a Shabbat greeting, and my community there sends back photographs of Shabbat. I gather them into a montage and send that light back out to everyone.
This week is the last one. And it turned out so lovely that I wanted to share it here too, with all of you, wherever you follow me
Thank you for the candles. The tables set and waiting. The quiet corners of your homes on a Friday evening. You did not just send photographs. You let me see how Shabbat actually lives inside your houses and inside your hearts, and being trusted with that is not a small thing
There is a reason this fit so naturally alongside teaching Hebrew. A language is not really a set of words. It is a way people have found, over thousands of years, to say here I am to one another
Thank you for a year of light.

There is something about you that you have learned to say with an apology in front of it. Somebody taught you to.
A woman did that with me a few days ago. We were talking about working together, and she told me that in her previous jobs, she would see what could be better and say so, and it never went well. Then she asked if that was going to be a problem here too
She wasn’t asking. She was warning me
I knew the sentence because I lived it. I was the one who raised the problem nobody wanted raised. I wasn’t trying to be difficult. I just could not ignore what I knew would make the thing truly great. And every time, the temperature dropped a little
The thing she learned to apologize for is the thing greatness is made of
Maybe yours isn’t about work. Are you the one who asks the extra question? Too honest? Too direct? Too invested?
Go back and look at the thing you apologize for. That’s exactly what makes you rare

Muslim Prayer & Community
The Islamic Association of Raleigh offers daily prayers throughout the week, including Saturdays, along with educational programs and community activities.
Weekend schedules may include family programming, Qur’an study, and youth activities in addition to daily prayers.

On the Israeli ‘Married at First Sight’, a husband told the therapist he was waiting for certainty before letting his guard down.
Her answer belongs on billboards. It won’t happen in that order. You let your guard down first. That’s the only way it can come in.
Every big thing that changed my life happened in the “wrong” order. I jumped before I felt ready.
Ready doesn’t come first. It comes after.

Then work backward from it. One small choice built around how you want to feel, not just what you think you’re supposed to do.
None of this is about doing more. It’s about choosing on purpose instead of drifting into whatever the day throws at you first.

There is a kind of tired that sleep fixes, and a kind it doesn’t.
When you rest and wake up still carrying the heaviness, that might not be tired at all. That might be empty. And empty does not lift with more sleep. It lifts the moment you stop leaving yourself out.
So this Shabbat, put one small piece of the thing that is truly yours back into your week. The thing you would do even if no one ever knew. Not more sleep. A little more of you. 💙

There is something I have carried with me my whole life from Tel Aviv to here and it is this. No matter how full or how heavy the week was, Shabbat arrives and gently tells you to put it down. To pause. To raise a glass to everything you survived and everything you are grateful for.
So here I am glass in hand, wishing you rest that actually feels like rest. A table surrounded by people who know you. And a moment this weekend where you let yourself simply be.
You earned this pause. Take it.
