A Very Special Shabbat Shalom Friends 🕯️🕯
One year.
For fifty two weeks, something quiet and beautiful has been happening on my Facebook page. Every Friday I share a Shabbat greeting, and my community there sends back photographs of Shabbat. I gather them into a montage and send that light back out to everyone.
This week is the last one. And it turned out so lovely that I wanted to share it here too, with all of you, wherever you follow me
Thank you for the candles. The tables set and waiting. The quiet corners of your homes on a Friday evening. You did not just send photographs. You let me see how Shabbat actually lives inside your houses and inside your hearts, and being trusted with that is not a small thing
There is a reason this fit so naturally alongside teaching Hebrew. A language is not really a set of words. It is a way people have found, over thousands of years, to say here I am to one another
Thank you for a year of light.

"A #swastika was painted on #TempleShalom in #Wheeling, #WestVirginia, last week. Wheeling is about 60 miles southwest of #Pittsburgh.
The #Nazi symbol was painted on the #Reform congregation’s wall on Thursday, Aug. 13 and was removed before #Shabbat services on Aug. 14.
The congregation’s #Rabbi #JoshuaLief told the Herald-Star that police are investigating the act, calling it a “#hatecrime.”

"The #Detroit #RidefortheLiving is one of many around the globe that are adjuncts to the original Ride for the Living, held every year in #Poland. The original Ride begins at the nefarious #Nazi #concentrationcamp at #Auschwitz- #Birkenau, Poland, and ends at the #Jewish Community Center in #Kraków, Poland.
This international Ride for the Living takes place over four days in Poland in June. It features a 60-mile #bike ride as well as other activities related to the #Holocaust and Jewish community #history. It ends with a #Shabbat dinner. Most important, the Ride commemorates those who were lost in the Holocaust and the resilience of the Jewish people. It’s an impressive event. Just ask Cheryl and Arnie Berlin who took the Ride in Poland (June 7, 2018).
The JCC in Kraków is a prime exemplar for survival and resilience. Before World War II, Poland had the largest Jewish population in #Europe at 3 million."

There is something about you that you have learned to say with an apology in front of it. Somebody taught you to.
A woman did that with me a few days ago. We were talking about working together, and she told me that in her previous jobs, she would see what could be better and say so, and it never went well. Then she asked if that was going to be a problem here too
She wasn’t asking. She was warning me
I knew the sentence because I lived it. I was the one who raised the problem nobody wanted raised. I wasn’t trying to be difficult. I just could not ignore what I knew would make the thing truly great. And every time, the temperature dropped a little
The thing she learned to apologize for is the thing greatness is made of
Maybe yours isn’t about work. Are you the one who asks the extra question? Too honest? Too direct? Too invested?
Go back and look at the thing you apologize for. That’s exactly what makes you rare

Not typically a fan of Rabbi Ruttenberg, but this is an interesting, provocative thought-piece.
"Nobody would think twice about demanding a #reasonableaccommodation if #corporations asked #Jews to start violating #Shabbat or partaking of the #pork BBQ at the #company retreat against their own practice. And while I would not demand that every #Jew request such an #accommodation (for Shabbat or keeping #kosher), they should absolutely have that option available, even if their #religious practice is a work in progress. So too, here.
And despite seeing many people (including religious Jews!) eliding the moral and religious issues around #AI because "that train has already left the station," we should make choices based on whether they are right or wrong. Also, it's a fallacy: Movements grow from dissent."

"The Federation of #Jewish Communities of #Spain said Monday it is considering legal action after what it described as “one of the most serious cases of #antisemitic harassment recorded in #Barcelona in recent years.”
According to the federation, the incident took place late Friday night after a group of Jewish citizens from #France left a #synagogue following prayers and a #Shabbat meal.
Two members of the group, who were identifiable as Jewish because they were wearing #kippahs, one of them in Hasidic dress, became the target of hostile looks, insults and a chase that lasted nearly an hour and a half as they made their way to their hotel, according to their testimony."

"The #US #SupremeCourt has agreed to hear the case of #DanielGrand, an #Orthodox #Jew from #Ohio who says local authorities barred him from holding #Jewish #prayer gatherings at his home and that neighbors harassed him over the practice.
The decision by the nation’s highest court to take up the case is considered highly unusual in the #American #legal system, as the Supreme Court hears only about 50 cases a year.
The dispute began in 2021. Grand, who lives in #UniversityHeights, wanted to pray with a #minyan, the quorum of 10 Jewish men required for certain communal prayers. Because Jewish law prohibits driving on #Shabbat and holidays, and the local #synagogue was too far away to reach on foot, he decided to host worshippers in his private home."

One of my favorite expressions in Hebrew is:
כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ סָפֵק אֵין סָפֵק
/k-she-’yesh sa-’fek ’e(y)-n sa-’fek/
When in doubt, there is no doubt.
The doubt itself is often the answer.
We spend so much time trying to talk ourselves out of what we already know. Looking for reassurance. Hoping someone else will make it feel right.
But doubt is not the same as fear.
Some of the best decisions I’ve ever made scared me. They pushed me beyond my comfort zone and into growth. Fear can be part of something wonderful.
Doubt feels different. It’s quieter. Heavier. It doesn’t demand attention. It simply waits for you to listen.
The more you learn to recognize the difference, the clearer life becomes.
Your intuition usually knows long before your mind catches up.

Abib 18 (2023-04-08): Today, 2,000 years ago, the #Messiah resurrected on the third day as was prophesied. It was a weekly #Sabbath / #Shabbat, for the Messiah is the Master of Sabbath/Shabbat. It was not on the first day of the week, not on #Easter.
He left his tomb on Sabbath day and have shown himself to countless people who did not recognise he has resurrected. Just like how it is today!
