Was feeling a little unsure of how to spend the day.
So I started an apple honey babka I'd been eyeing this week (Joan Nathan/NYTimes).
The kitchen now smells like butter, sugar, and apples. Can't complain.

I refuse to be the model minority and I won't give up to demands that other Babkans be either.
We enforce the rules we have (I wrote them) but won't give in to keyboard bullies who insist that we be all be polite, that we align with a certain political movement, that we don't express our pain, that we aren't religious enough, that we talk about Judaism too much, that we talk in certain ways, that we respond to demands of loyalty pledges, that we are too sexual, that we're not sexual enough, that we're too Queer, that we're too heternormative, etc.
As long as you follow the rules, you're allowed to be authentically Jewish in whatever way speaks to you on Babka Social.

So we have in recent weeks had some new people on #Babka and I feel there is some lore worth explaining.
A while back, I commissioned some custom emojis to be made. One of them was for a #synagogue The problem is during review we had a disagreement on what the synagogue should look like.
We ultimately ended up with three
:hurva_synagogue: :moorish_synagogue: :altneushul:
The first modelled on the synagogue in Jerusalem, the second modelled on one in Berlin, and last one modelled on one in Prague. This last one being the same synagogue that might hold the Golem of Prague (we still need a golem emoji)
But we didn't just do this because we couldn't agree, but to celebrate that we couldn't agree. That our differences are something to be celebrated and not something to brush under the rug.
This embodies what Babka is at its best, and I'm glad for everyone here with us to enjoy it!

Feeling very disillusioned. I converted to Judaism in order to finally find belonging, but I'm realizing these organizations don't align with my values. It seems I'll just be a solo Jew. Now I'm having to once again struggle with finding a way to feel I belong somewhere. I never seem to fit.

In the last three days, myself and Babka's incredible moderators have fielded hate speech reports about 90 accounts, across 53 instances.
As far as I can tell, none of them have been acted on by the remote instances. None.
Saying the Fediverse has an antisemitism problem is an extreme understatement. This network systemically hates Jews and treats us differently than other marginalized groups, even when we're the literal victims of terrorism.
