I wish I could find the folks who volunteered for this study to thank them. They didn't know who'd get the vaccine vs. the placebo. They were willing to be infected with a bacteria that could cause fever and diarrhea!

Yes, they got paid, but still - a round of applause for these unknown heroes!

I see in the news an article about a #Shigella breakout. Being curious and having never heard of Shigella, I searched #Bing. Before clicking on any links, I see in the corner this excerpt from #Wikipedia noting, "...is genetically closely related to #Escherichia and #Antisemitism." Wait, what? Antisemitism is now a bacterial infection? I think not. The Wikipedia article does NOT say this, so the Bing result is #weird.

#Shigella infections known as shigellosis can cause a #fever, abdominal #cramping, tenesmus and #diarrhea that is #bloody.
The bacteria can be spread by a fecal-oral route, person-to-person contact, and contaminated food and water.
While typically shigellosis affects young children, the CDC says it has started to see more of the #antimicrobial-#resistant infections in adult populations – especially in men who have sex with men, people experiencing homelessness, international travelers and people living with HIV.

“Most cases have stayed in five-star, all-inclusive hotels in the Santa Maria region of the island Sal”, the ECDC writes in a risk assessment.
The report notes 258 cases. “The most recent cases were reported in Sweden on 19 January 2023, suggesting an ongoing moderate risk of new infections among travellers in Cabo Verde, particularly among those staying in the Santa Maria region of Sal.”

"Our findings underscore the importance of cell death in defense against intracellular bacterial pathogens and provide an example of how layered and hierarchical immune pathways can provide robust defense against pathogens that have evolved a broad arsenal of virulence factors."

Exactly… access to clean water and waste treatment are basic rights.
When I pass encampments I wonder how we can provide those effectively for people where they are, rather than breaking up their homes and making them move.
