"Across the world, the spread of dangerous infections that do not respond to antibiotics has been increasing by as much as 15 percent a year, affecting treatment for urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, E. coli and other pathogens that kill millions of people annually, according to a report released Monday by the World Health Organization.

    The report documents how countries are grappling with the challenge of so-called antimicrobial resistance. It found that one in six infections in 2023 was resistant to the current roster of antibiotic drugs. The drug resistance involves 40 percent of the most common antibiotics used against these infections.

    Southeast Asia and the eastern Mediterranean had the highest rates of resistance, with one in three infections resistant to antibiotics. That is roughly double the worldwide average and more three times the rates in Europe and the Western Pacific.
    Overall, antimicrobial resistance was more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, especially those with weak health care systems."

    "Experts are sounding the alarm about a highly contagious #fungaldisease that's becoming resistant to common drugs. They warn this could make illnesses like #thrush much harder to treat.

    "Medical professionals have warned that the world is not prepared for the growing threat of fungal infections.

    "These can range from common conditions like #ringworm and thrush to life-threatening bloodstream infections caused by #CandidaAlbicans and #CandidaAuris.

    "David Denning, a professor at the University of Manchester, previously spoke to The Mirror about a drug-resistant form of #ringworm. He explained how this fungus can easily spread in schools and homes.

    "He said: 'Skin fungal infections are transmitted from one person to another in schools, homes and with intimate contact. This new #TerbinafineResistant fungus is a new species called #TrichophytonIndotineae and [was] first identified in India.

    "Experts believe the rise in resistant fungi is due to overuse of over-the-counter #antifungal creams, misuse of #TopicalSteroid creams, incorrect prescription of antifungal drugs, as well as patients not sticking to prescribed courses of antifungal medication."

  17. #Shigella infections known as shigellosis can cause a #fever, abdominal #cramping, tenesmus and #diarrhea that is #bloody.
    The bacteria can be spread by a fecal-oral route, person-to-person contact, and contaminated food and water.
    While typically shigellosis affects young children, the CDC says it has started to see more of the #antimicrobial-#resistant infections in adult populations – especially in men who have sex with men, people experiencing homelessness, international travelers and people living with HIV.

    I work on the #EvolutionaryEcology of host-parasite interactions using #Malaria as a model system. I mostly work on #AvianMalaria, but I occasionally dabble in human and #RodentMalaria.

    I’m particularly interested in exploring the genetic and environmental sources of heterogeneity in parasite #Virulence and within-host dynamics. Also keen on #DrugResistance and parasite #PhenotypicPlasticity. Oh, and #Mosquitos, obviously 😎

  19. A great read on #DrugResistance in #cancer, in Nature, by Vasan, Baselga, and Hyman. Sure, 2019 is four years ago, so there will be updates, e.g. on mapping #CancerDependency or the role of #ctDNA in early detection or monitoring. But the framework for understanding drug resistance is here.
