  1. Hebrew Union College to admit and ordain rabbinical students in interfaith relationships, ending longstanding ban, By Philissa Cramer June 20, 2024

"...To replace the intermarriage ban, HUC is adopting a new requirement that students with children pledge to raise them “exclusively as Jews engaged with Jewish religious practice, education, and community.”

The commitment is in line with what Reform rabbis are asked to require of couples they wed and reflects the movement’s stance on determining who is a Jew: While historically Judaism was largely conferred through conversion or matrilineal descent, for four decades, Reform Judaism has considered any child of one Jewish parent to be Jewish as long as they are raised with a “positive and exclusive Jewish identity.”

  2. This video is probably the best summarization of the various Jewish denominations/branches, the history of Judaism, including the various geographic changes that lead to changes, belief structures, understanding of Judaism as different from Christianity, differences on observance, and more.

It's such a great explainer video, I highly recommend it!

  3. This was quite interesting.

I’m too tired to look it all up now but I have two basic questions. Maybe someone can help me?:

    1. Who decides/how are the rabbis who make #Halacha decisions in Conservative Judaism selected (elected?). How does this fit with the history of rabbinic #Judaism?

    2. Reform Judaism’s Responsa are similarly given by a selected/elected body? What’s the process?

    In 1999 #CCAR reaffirmed -

We affirm the reality and oneness of God, even as we may differ in our understanding of the Divine presence.
We affirm that the Jewish people is bound to God by an eternal (b’rit) covenant, as reflected in our varied understandings of Creation, Revelation and Redemption.
We affirm that every human being is created (b’tzelem Elohim) in the image of God, and that therefore every human life is sacred

  5. A great #shiur on #spirituality from the Reform movement. Johanna Hershenson comments on

Now Bezalel, son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, had made ALL that the Eternal had commanded Moses. (Exodus 38)

and on - Just as the Eternal had commanded Moses, so the Israelites had done ALL the work. And when Moses saw that they had performed ALL the tasks – as God had commanded, so they had done – Moses blessed them. (Exodus 39)

  6. Where do you see Non-Orthodox and Orthodox Jews collaborating? Heard about #Hazon? They are leading a transformative movement weaving sustainability into the fabric of Jewish life, in order to create a healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable world for all.

  7. Orthodox and Non-Orthodox Jews working together - The Shalom Hartman Institute is a #Jerusalem institute for Jewish thought and education, for scholars, rabbis, educators, and community leaders in #Israel and North America. The goal is to strengthen Jewish identity, enhance the Jewish and democratic character of Israel, and ensure that #Judaism is a compelling force for good in the 21st century.

  8. It's always time for #goodnews - examples of Orthodox and Non-Orthodox Jews working together for the common good :-) The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership (#CLAL) is an interdenominational training institute and resource center, in which rabbis from all major Jewish denominations participate.

Ekim writes "wow. Which Jews are saying non-Orthodox Jews shouldn’t learn Hasidut?"

We received hateful speech saying that we are misogynist fundamentalists trying to convert people to ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Judaism. Not only clearly false but also wacky. In reality, neo-Hasidic Judaism is growing in #ReformJudaism and #ConservativeJudaism.

Also (and we shouldn't even have to say this) no one should ever hate Hasidic Jews. If someone doesn't want to be one, then just don't be one.

  10. Did you know - on several occasions rabbis in Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Judaism worked to heal rifts in our community. If more people know about these enterprises it could inspire our own generation to help restore #Jewishunity

  11. Where do we see Non-Orthodox and Orthodox #rabbis and lay Jewish leaders working together? Where do we see people creating #Achdut (#JewishUnity) today? We're looking for examples and inspirations!

Here we see Jews from #CLAL, from all denominations, at the Katz Center for Jewish Studies at the Univ. of Pennsylvania

  12. Have you read the Reform movement's "Gates of Understanding: A Companion Volume to Gates of Prayer"? What are your thoughts?

Includes essays on #tefila, #Hebrew prayers, #Jewish #liturgy, holiness, #theology, & music, by leading thinkers in #ReformJudaism. An invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history and development of liturgy and Reform Jewish practice.

  13. Have you davened from Mishkan Hanefesh? This is the newest #mahzor from #ReformJudaism

In your view, how does it compare to the classic Reform prayerbook, Gates of Repentance? Or to the Conservative movement's Mahzor Lev Shalem? Or to the Modern Orthodox mahzor from Koren?

In your view, wow does it compare to the classic Reform prayerbook, Gates of Prayer? To the Conservative movement's Siddur Sim Shalom, or the #ModernOrthodox Koren Sacks Siddur?

  15. @[email protected] @emilyk @mazeldon

What upsets some Jews on Mastodon is that they don't want us non-Orthodox Jews to learn Chassidus or even be friends with Orthodox Jews. We however feel that friendship and reading is not threatening. Open your hearts to the many non-Orthodox Jews discovering neo-Hasidut. This is mainstream across #ReformJudaism, #JewishRenewal, and #ConservativeJudaism.

  16. When Europeans went to America they didn’t find ancient manuscripts of Shakespeare: because they were colonisers
Jews in Israel find ancient manuscripts written in Hebrew, the same language they speak today, describing the same rituals they observe: because they’re indigenous.
