  1. A new memoir, ‘The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews,’ explores traumatic teenage years in Hasidic Crown Heights, By Julia Gergely July 8, 2024

"...Rossi told the story of her rise through New York’s culinary scene in the 1980s in her 1st memoir, called “The Raging Skillet,” in 2015:

    bookshop.org/p/books/the-ragin

...Her 2nd memoir is more of a prequel than a follow-up. In “The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews,” released earlier this year, Rossi digs into everything that came before: specifically, the two years she lived in Crown Heights as a teenager. The book narrates what she describes as the misogyny, assault & trauma she experienced there. These experiences would shape the rest of her life, inspiring her to become a chef & come out as lesbian:

“It is the most unusual ‘How I Came to New York’ story, which I would tell when I was a starving artist in the 1980s..."

Threading Stones - An Elul Tradition
July 2 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT
    Recurring Event - Tuesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 2024
    Course fee is $250

Prepare yourself for Elul and the High Holy Days by learning an ancient tradition, rarely taught by those who have practice in this tradition.

For generations, Jewish women in Eastern Europe utilized threads to measure cemeteries and graves. These threads were used to create special soul candles known as neshome likht, or sometimes as protective bands worn on wrists, ankles, or necks. Typically overseen by skilled women called feldmesterins, activities such as feldmestn (cemetery measuring) and kneytlekh leygn (laying wicks) were most prevalent during Elul to prepare soul candles for Yom Kippur.

  4. From Reboot:
The new album The Golem and Other Tales by Sam Reider is inspired by Isaac Bachevis-Singer’s 1969 novella The Golem, a morally ambiguous take on the ancient Jewish folktale that inspired the creation of Superman. A pianist, accordionist and composer, Reider is touring music from the new album in cities around the country with his all-star acoustic band the Human Hands.

The tour features the renowned instrumentalist alongside his all-star acoustic band the Human Hands, featuring Billy Strings’ violinist Alex Hargreaves, Jon Batiste’s alto saxophonist Eddie Barbash, Duncan Wickel on violin, cello, and bouzouki, Molly Tuttle’s mandolinist Dominick Leslie, bassist Andrew Ryan, and guitarist Roy Williams. The music relies on folk, Americana, and jazz at its core.

We're delighted that poet Hila Ratzabi will bring forward the wisdom of another important Jewish woman: Etty Hillesum, whose life was cut too soon, too short. Her gentle writings, meaningful and thought-provoking, were translated to multiple languages, and are shared worldwide as a source of teaching, comfort and endurance.

  6. In Jerusalem, a unique hotel offers respite for women who have experienced stillbirth, By Deborah Danan June 25, 2024

"...The center is operated by Yad Sarah, Israel’s largest volunteer organization, and housed on the sixth floor of its Yirmiyahu 33 Rehabilitation and Wellness Hotel at the entrance to Jerusalem, the country’s only fully accessible hotel for people with disabilities. Nightly stays are heavily subsidized and couples pay 350 NIS ($93) per night, which they can then claim back from their health insurance for up to four nights. Yes, 1990.
"...The interests of Jews are threatened now because...Jews in particular have a great deal to lose if the wall separating church and state develops any fractures.

Jewish law on abortion posits that the life of the mother takes precedence over that of the unborn child. According to halacha...the fetus is potential life only, and its claims are secondary to those of the woman. 8. Jewish parents join lawsuit challenging Louisiana law requiring Ten Commandments in schools, By Jackie Hajdenberg June 25, 2024

"...Jewish families have played leading roles in religious liberty lawsuits challenging recent legislation by conservative state legislatures. Rabbis in a number of states have sued to block restrictions on abortion...arguing that they are based in Christianity and violate the separation of church and state...

In the lawsuit, the parents argued that they believe “that their children will be pressured to observe, venerate, and adopt the state’s preferred religious doctrine and to suppress expression of their own religious backgrounds and views at school.”

  9. From Ariele Mortkowitz at SVIVAH:

"...This week I went...to attend a hearing on conflict-related sexual violence & to watch a special screening of the 10/7 documentary, “Screams Before Silence.”

...It’s not enough to just be sad or angry. ...We owe it to all women, everywhere and anywhere women are used as a tool of war. We have to speak up for them. Because they are us. Women victimized in conflict are targeted because they are women. And women are still being victimized today, right now. In Gaza & in so many places around the globe. This isn’t about politics. This is about women standing up for women, for ourselves. To not permit the world to use and abuse women as a tool of war...

So I’m going to ask you to lean in. I will, too. But we have to do something. It’s hard to feel like there’s any way to be useful, but we just have to find something & do it. Some (very) small suggestions..."

“The Forgotten Refugees” is an excellent film that seeks not to indoctrinate but to educate. The interviews with many Mizrachi Jews make clear that the question of identity and allegiance is still a troubling one for many of them. 12. We must teach the history of antisemitism in all countries, not just European ones - opinion

There is a moral and academic imperative to teach the components of genocide; It would enable people to discern when to distinguish between actual genocide and misinformation.
By SARAH LEVIN JUNE 20, 2024

"...We can no longer ignore or fail to teach our students the Nazi roots of the Muslim Brotherhood – the father organization of Hamas, the historical and violent criminalization of “Zionism” and “Zionists” in the Arab world, and the ongoing belligerent and systemic Holocaust denial by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

  13. Hebrew Union College to admit and ordain rabbinical students in interfaith relationships, ending longstanding ban, By Philissa Cramer June 20, 2024

"...To replace the intermarriage ban, HUC is adopting a new requirement that students with children pledge to raise them “exclusively as Jews engaged with Jewish religious practice, education, and community.”

The commitment is in line with what Reform rabbis are asked to require of couples they wed and reflects the movement’s stance on determining who is a Jew: While historically Judaism was largely conferred through conversion or matrilineal descent, for four decades, Reform Judaism has considered any child of one Jewish parent to be Jewish as long as they are raised with a “positive and exclusive Jewish identity.”

"...The tension between the idyllic departure and the actual journey [in this week's parashat] mirrors our current experience. We live with nostalgia for eras in which everything was supposedly fine, ignoring the lived experiences of our ancestors. Many of us live with the pain that even today our reality is far from what we want. Almost daily since Oct. 7 I feel visceral pain from my broken illusions, illusions that the world had rid itself of much of its antisemitic hatred, illusions that the evils perpetrated against defenseless Jews were somehow a thing of the past. Today we live with the pain of being in the wilderness — knowing there is a promised land, but stuck wandering in the dense thickets of uncertainty..."

  15. This Pride, queer Jews are feeling the strain — and sometimes unsafe — over Israel, By Andrew Lapin June 18, 2024

“Individuals and Organizations have targeted our board members, including [with] threats of violence,” Cincinnati Pride said in an Instagram statement.

...Critics say this is creating an atmosphere of antisemitism or Israel-related “litmus tests” for queer Jews, caught between two marginalized identities whose communal politics are growing further apart.

“We’re now in a very, very serious moment when we need all hands on deck,” Ethan Felson, executive director of LGBTQ Jewish group A Wider Bridge, said earlier this month during a Pride-focused community briefing with the Jewish Federations of North America...

  20. Jewish immigrant men abandoned their wives in droves a century ago. Their stories are getting a new look
By Luke Tress June 14, 2024

"...The issue of abandonment was widespread in the immigrant world of early 1900s New York, common enough that well-known psychics...specialized in divining the whereabouts of missing men. Reasons for leaving families varied, but the most common appeared to be other women. Other reasons recorded by the bureau include criminality, “influence of bad friends,” “Broadway high life,” “to evade military service” and “did not like Baltimore.” Sometimes women left their husbands due to “cruelty” or “barbarity,” a euphemism for domestic violence...

A common denominator among all the cases: the hardship of arriving in a new country. Many immigrants lived in cramped tenement apartments with their families, working long hours, six days a week, and divorce was expensive..."

  23. Anti-Israel hostility is making deeply needed Pride events less safe for Jews like us, by Nate Looney & Ethan Felson, June 10, 2024

"...The Jewish community is already being overwhelmed by a tide of antisemitism and anti-Zionism. Between the terrorist attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 and the end of 2023, ADL counted more than 5,000 antisemitic incidents. That is more than occurred throughout the entire previous year.

More than half of these (2,718) included references to Israel, Zionism or Palestine. In other words, Jews here were targeted and harmed for actions taken by leaders in another country. That’s not OK. It’s no wonder that LGBTQ+ Jews feel anxious coming to Pride this year. .."

  25. Mourning and Meaning Making -
Someday our current sorrows will be memories, woven into the tapestry of our shared destiny, By Rabbi Shira Koch Epstein

"...This year, that process is more fraught than most. It has been only six months since the massacres of October 7th, and we are still engulfed in a brutal war. How can we engage in acts of ritual remembering when we are living in between “they tried to kill us” and “we prevailed?”

Our processes of mourning and memory can provide some guideposts. ...We gather, share stories and support those in the depths of grief, collectively waiting for the time when we might begin to make meaning. This sharing is the beginning of a narrative process during which memories become stories, eventually burnished into legacy when they motivate our actions..."

    @em @nevo

The way I think of it (and try to explain it)is that there are people who identify as Palestinian Jews and Arab Jews; that they do exist. But Kanye West also exists and that doesn't make it any less ridiculous to talk about "Black Nazis" as though they are anything more than a barely-more-than-theoretical concept.

For the most part, you have Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews, and a smattering of those who self-identify as a specific region: Kurdish Jews, Yemeni, Moroccan, Mexican, Ethiopian, Iraqi, etc, and that any one of those irregular self-descriptors contains more people than identify as Arab Jew or Palestinian Jew, and should be known and understood in the same sense as those: "Jews, like any human, contain multitudes".
