Finally, after 16 months of effort, I have finished converting Pandora's Tale Wiki into a gemini capsule.

I've mentioned before that the entire wiki started as a single table, which listed all named characters and some unnamed characters in the first seven chapters.

I initially made it as a spreadsheet on my computer. I uploaded the table to Google sheets to share it, and I converted it into a wiki to update it. Everything else in the wiki came out of that table.

When I started converting the wiki to geminispace, I immediately ran into a hurdle: gemtext, the markup language of geminispace, does not support tables.

Over the past year, I attempted several hacks to get the tables from the MediaWiki version of the wiki into the new version. Each of those hacks suffered from at least one of the following three issues:
* It would be difficult for me to update,
* It was hard for people using screenreaders,
* The web proxy would have more features than the gemini capsule,
* It looked bad to me.

The opinion of many geminauts is that you should not use tables in geminispace. I considered early on whether it would be possible to reformat all the tables in the wiki using lists and subsections. However, I resisted the idea largely because it felt weird to purge all tables from PTW when the entire wiki started as a table.

Last night and this morning, however, I gave it a try. Every table in the entire wiki has been converted into ordinary gemtext lists, separated by section and subsection headers.

The result, when I use a gemini browser to look at the very first PTW article in its new format is...I kinda like it?!?

It isn't perfect, and I'll probably do some additional reformatting later, and there are likely even more tweaks I want to do to the web proxy, but the page does express the relevant information without any awkward hacks.

Now that I'm finally done with the transition (heh) to gemtext, I will shut down the legacy version of Pandora's Tale Wiki.

Today is the 3-year Wikiversary of Pandora's Tale Wiki! The wiki officially launched September 3, 2022.

The past year has been a big year for me personally, but it's also been a big year for the wiki.

In some ways, this was the slowest year of Pandora's Tale Wiki. There were no new chapters of the comic, leaving us with very little new content to add to the wiki. We added some information about the new official Spanish translation of Pandora's Tale, but I cannot read Spanish, so there are limits to how much I can cover changes to the text.

On the technical side, however, we have seen massive changes. I began the process of converting the wiki from MediaWiki to git and gemtext, codenamed Project: Texts About Pandora. This transition is still ongoing. It requires changing every page in the wiki, but I think the change is necessary. I believe that, in an age of increasing censorship, a wiki about queerness and fighting fascism should be easier to edit and view offline.

Additionally, I believe this change will make the wiki easier to maintain. When @[email protected] ultimately releases Chapter 12, I will use the new chapter to see which wiki is easier to update. Until then, both the old and new wikis will coexist.

Let's have a great Year 4.

In keeping with my preference, the website version contains only HTML: no CSS or JS.

There are several issues to deal with. I wrote the gemtext to HTML converter myself today after getting annoyed trying to use existing converters, so there are almost certainly many significant bugs. There is currently no search feature. Images do not display in-line (this is due to a known bug in my converter).

Also, I had hoped that a git+gemtext wiki would be easier for me to update than a mediawiki wiki, but I can't actually verify whether that is true until Xan releases Chapter 12 and I try updating the wiki.

With that said, the wiki does work and you can browse it now.

The old wiki remains online at https://pandorastale.wiki, hosted by @[email protected] Once all the major issues are resolved, the new wiki will take over the domain and I will ask Miraheze to archive the old one.

a) Converting gmi->html locally on my computer and pushing it somewhere, or
b) Trying to do the conversion on Average's server.

2) I'm going to wait for Xan to release another chapter, so that I can see how hard it is to update the new wiki.

3) After that I will manually check every page to see if there are major formatting errors.

Only after completing all of these steps will I shut down the original MediaWiki version of PTW. Until then, it will remain accessible at https://pandorastale.wiki .

Today, I finally accomplished something which had been on my bucket list for a long time.

If you start on the main page of Pandora's Tale Wiki, and repeatedly click on random links to other pages on the wiki, how much time should you expect to spend on each page?

The math is long solved: it's the eigenvector centrality of the graph all pages on the wiki, with edges corresponding to links.

The hard part was actually getting the wiki's graph. I never figured out how to do it when we were using MediaWiki.

Now that I have the entire wiki as local text files, it's much easier to scrape through all of them with a script.

The page with the highest eigenvector centrality is the Characters page

In a random walk around the wiki, you'd spend about 4.2% of your time on that page. There are 138 text pages on the wiki, so Characters gets 5.8 times more of your time than the average.

The Characters article is followed closely by the articles for Pandora, Isabelle, Pandora's Tale, Veronica, "Echo, Part 1," and the article on Helpers.

The page with the lowest eigenvector centrality, clocking in at just 0.07%, is the "Blank Chapter Page" template, which isn't really an article.

As of today, all articles in the new Pandora's Tale Wiki have been fully converted to text/gemini.

There are still a few more formatting changes I want to do before I can declare the new wiki better than the old one.

Notably, the website for the git repository does not actually render gemtext. Gemtext is very close to plain text, so the articles are still legible, but eventually I want to set things up so that you can actually view the articles rendered in either a web browser or a gemini browser.

Huh, that was easier than I thought it would be.

I converted the majority of MediaWiki formatting to Markdown or Gemtext, including all the templates and tables.

The big things remaining are internal links. I wrote a hacky script to convert wiki links into markdown links. The external links worked, but, due to a variety of issues I couldn't figure out, the majority of internal links came out broken.

I think I am going to have to convert most links manually. Closely tied to this task is the big decision I have to make: do I want to use markdown or gemtext? Links are the major incompatibility between the two formats.

TIL that
1) sed modifies binary files as if they were text.
2) Some webp images contain strings that could be mistaken for pieces of MediaWiki syntax.

On a totally unrelated note, a bunch of images in Pandora's Tale Wiki were corrupted. They should be fixed now.

The very first content article of Pandora's Tale Wiki was the list of characters. It actually predates the wiki: the character table started as a spreadsheet when I was preparting for the first Pandora's Tale Character Tournament.

When I created the Fandom version of PTW, one of the first things I did was convert the table into a MediaWiki article.

That article uses MediaWiki-specific features. Namely, it uses PAGESINCATEGORY to display the number of chapters each character appears in.

Today, I have finished converting the character appearances table to gemtext. I had it in Markdown, but I realized I wasn't even using any markdown-specific features. Gemtext (and Forgejo's Markdown) lack tables, so I used plain text tables. (That's the format that @[email protected] used to hate until I single-handedly won them over.)

I also have a Python script for updating the number of character appearances automatically.

Awhile ago, I announced a plan to convert Pandora's Tale Wiki from MediaWiki to git. The main reasons are
1) In an era of increasing censorship, a wiki about queerness and fighting fascism should be available in a format that is easy to edit offline.
2) I think it will be easier to maintain.

Today, I have taken the first public step in that process. You can see a git-ified version of the wiki here:

Hosting is provided by @[email protected] : That's right, a Helper is hosting the wiki about Helpers. She might, or might not, provide our permanent home.

Two things need to happen before I can declare this version of PTW the "main" one. First, I need to verify that this format is actually easier to maintain. That means waiting for @[email protected] to release a new chapter so I can see how hard it is to update.

Second, (almost?) every page currently has formatting errors due to the conversion. I need to fix all of them.

Until I complete both of those steps, the MediaWiki version will remain at https://pandorastale.wiki .

There are still some things I need to determine.

1) First and most significantly, I have to figure out how to convert a MediaWiki instance into a git repository. I've found several scripts which claim to do it, but they all seem to have significant drawbacks in addition to being unmaintained. I would greatly appreciate advice from computer creatures in this regard.

2) Then I have to decide on the text format: Plaintext, gemtext, or markdown? There are ups and downs to each of them, though I'm not as worried since I believe it might be possible to convert between them later.

3) Finally I have to decide on the hosting software and platform if I want anyone else to be able to read it. Gitlab, Forgejo, sourcehut, or something else?

Once I answer these questions, I am going to move Pandora's Tale Wiki to a git repository, and then I will ask Miraheze to shut down their copy of the wiki. I don't know how long this process will take, but I believe it's the only way I can continue the wiki.

Today we completed a goal we've had for a long time.

The wiki now has clear delineations between canon information sourced directly from the comic, and "semi-canon" information sourced from @[email protected] social media.

All references to social media are accompanied by an archive link. Hence, social media posts which can't be archived (such as Discord messages) are not referenced on the wiki at all.

I waffled back and forth about whether the alt text should be considered fully canon or only semi-canon. I decided to count it as semi-canon because
a)Currently the alt text is only visible on the fediverse, not the actual comic site.
b)For Chapters 1-5, the alt text is based on drafts of the script, and the text differs in a few places from what's in the comic.
