Hmm...
Anti-AI idea: Use a very new image file format (read: #jxl) with a BS avif as fallback. It's accessible thanks to alt text and the kind of visitors you want will surely have the flag to enable jxl set to enabled... 😈 -
@chartier But will it be JPEG XL or still HEIC? Or even downgraded to ancient Jpeg?
-
I happened to stumble across an article that JpegXL is now available in Chrome on Android (after a flag flip), and Firefox too. And indeed it is: https://jpegxl.info/resources/jpeg-xl-test-page.html
What changed? When?

@jonsneyers Could you help me figure out whether this JXL trick is realistic or I'm trying to catch a ghost?
I'm serving image thumbnails on file shares and later on the web; some use cases just use 64x64px, some want 2k. Pre-JXL I'd have stored binary steps and told the browser in a srcmap. Can a progressive encoder drop hints like "for 128px, you'll be reasonably done by 4015 bytes"? (And then there's the question of how to tell the browser so it can request ranges.)

Hey @gianni I was just chatting with @yawnbox about a wild range of tech things, and, since I am starting to host an Immich instance in my home, I am considering to convert all my emails to JPEG XL, and I was wondering if there is a way to do so without risking to lose any metadata.
I am happy to read any links you might have but I need them to be as simple as possible because encoding/decoding stuff confuses me a lot. Not my thing… This is why I found your article explaining how AV1 works in simple words absolutely illuminating! Anyway, I just want to save storage space.
Also, I am a big big fan of Aviator, and I have been following your work for a while. Thanks so much for all of it!

Wondering if Mastodon displays .jxl images...
Dang, it won't even let me SELECT a .jxl image, let alone show one :(
But also just found out my OS (Mint) default image viewer can't open .jxl, had to use the "image manager" Pix.

All this AI fuzz is making me sick, especially if I compare it to actually game-changing new technology like, for example, JPEG XL.
The former is hyped so much but it’s a very dull and bloated concept, while the latter is a concrete, non-proprietary, and free standard.
Of course, AI is fuelled by billions and billions of vacuous investments, while JPEG XL not only flies under the radar, but its adoption was actively blocked by Google because it went against their corporate interest.
To be clear: technical innovation is not the solution, but it saddens me to see that what is truly valuable is overlooked because some vacuous torment nexus takes up all the energy, the time, and the funding.

JPEG XL is on track to become part of the PDF specification. This is fantastic: https://youtube.com/watch?v=DjUPSfirHek&t=2148s

Does anybody know if the source to the jxl-crx browser extension that introduced support for #JpegXL in browsers that don't support it is available anywhere? Used to be on Github but seems to have disappeared from there.
Alternatively, are there other maintained, source-available extensions I should be looking into for this?
-
They really fucked up with the new #fileformats. Why even call it #webp. Just put the #png extension on it and no one would have to know if you made it backward compatible, your moronic apes. Just put #jpeg at the end of #jxl files.
Dumbass engineers they should hire me. I could have told them this.

New Halide blog post!
https://halide.cx/blog/consistency
Quality and speed define an image encoder's compression performance. Consistency is a close third, and easily overlooked in image encoder design. What value does it provide, and how can we measure it?

Today's fight started off early as I discovered JXL files in my most recent pull of manga from nyaa. My automation runs on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS and I use the tried and true ImageMagick to normalize my library into webp image format. ImageMagick does not support JXL (read JpegXL) until version 7.0.10. Ubuntu 24.04 only goes up to 6.9-ish and well, that's not good enough for me anymore.
I do the dance I likely have done in the past and check if IM supports its own PPA, nope. I cringe a little and take a peek is snap has something and, nope. But they have a appimage on the site. I grab it, permission it, install fuse because that's needed for appimages, and finally test it. No JXL support. -_-
BUT... During my dance I discovered this: https://github.com/SoftCreatR/imei/ - ImageMagick Easy Install. Someone did the work to:
- work out and install all dependencies.
- grab and compile anything else.
- grab and compile the latest and greatest ImageMagick and compile and install.Looks like he's been doing this for 5 years, kudos Mr. Sascha Greuel. Thank you. This was extremely helpful and painless. Did I mention it was painless. PAINLESS. Oh, and everything was installed and in path as expected in the end.

If you're curious about how good progressive image loading can be:
Go to https://jxl-oxide.tirr.dev/demo/index.html, select the Weesen (HDR) image, and set it to having loaded about 0.40% or 2% (7kB or 36kB out of 1.8MB).
This should simplify thumbnails a lot. -
This is one of the best things I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing.

Good news: XL-converter, the batch #JPEGXL transcoding GUI app, is now available as a #flatpak app on @flathub: https://github.com/JacobDev1/xl-converter/issues/95
I'll be looking forward to trying it out to losslessly re-encode my tons of .JPEG photos to #JXL to save space…
