I had some adventures in image-processing land with #JPEGXL for #AppStream, as well as #VIPS and sandboxing, and I finally got to blog about it:

So Mozilla has apparently just reconsidered their stance on JPEG XL! That is, going from ‘nope lol’ to ‘rust ftw lol’. Which reads like a rather ungraceful turnaround, but it is a turnaround, so… kudos to Mozilla for correcting some of their wrongs! :gutkato_dikfingro_supren:
(They say the requirement is for memory safety, which seems fair enough, but I do wonder why they needed three freaking years just to decide this was their main concern. Yay for efficiency, I guess.) :gutkato_flucerba:

Another JPEG XL comparison and analysis has dropped. The encoder keeps getting better. :gutkato_kontenta:
Any thoughts, @mozilla?

So the focus areas for Interop 2024 have been announced. (See dashboard here.)
:gutkato_neŭtrala: JPEG XL has been proposed for inclusion, but ended up not being included. Guess we’ll have to wait a while longer (hopefully not even more decades) before we have widespread support for an image format that actually manages a substantial improvement on all fronts.
:gutkato_malĝojeta: As per usual, thanks to Google for being jerks and @mozilla for maintaining a neutral stance on the issue, which I can only assume is meant to ‘make the internet a healthier, happier place for everyone’ in some obscure way my mortal mind is too feeble to comprehend.
:gutkato_dikfingro_supren: As per unusual, thanks to Apple for actually doing something right this time around and supporting the format!

Firefox 113.0beta release notes:
AV1 Image Format files containing animations (AVIS) are now supported, improving Firefox’ support for AVIF images across the web.
Yay, now AVIF can be used for both of the two things it’s actually useful for. Still no JPEG XL support.
