In late 2023, I considered trying to create a "wiki alliance" for webcomic wikis, inspired by the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA).

I thought about it for close to five minutes before deciding I didn't have nearly enough spoons to do it.

Instead, I created something much smaller: the Webcomic Independent Wiki List. Unlike NIWA, there is no organization backing this list: it's just a single page where I link to wikis that I like.

WCIWL officially launched two years ago today. I now link to 12 awesome wikis about webcomics.

Wissen entsteht nicht aus dem Nichts. Es braucht Menschen, die schreiben, recherchieren, teilen. Wenn aber Sichtbarkeit und Traffic ausbleiben, wer hat noch den Anreiz, qualitativ hochwertige Inhalte zu produzieren?

Awhile ago, I announced a plan to convert Pandora's Tale Wiki from MediaWiki to git. The main reasons are
1) In an era of increasing censorship, a wiki about queerness and fighting fascism should be available in a format that is easy to edit offline.
2) I think it will be easier to maintain.

Today, I have taken the first public step in that process. You can see a git-ified version of the wiki here:

Hosting is provided by @[email protected] : That's right, a Helper is hosting the wiki about Helpers. She might, or might not, provide our permanent home.

Two things need to happen before I can declare this version of PTW the "main" one. First, I need to verify that this format is actually easier to maintain. That means waiting for @[email protected] to release a new chapter so I can see how hard it is to update.

Second, (almost?) every page currently has formatting errors due to the conversion. I need to fix all of them.

Until I complete both of those steps, the MediaWiki version will remain at https://pandorastale.wiki .

@homlett We've been working enthusiastically on the basis of a sharing culture since the 2000s, when #blogs and #wikis became a thing. Then #socialnetworks emerged.

That basic assumption doesn't work anymore. The social aspect of the #internet is being exploited for various purposes.

What was once a grassroots initiative is now being used against us. It is our own content that is being sold back to us in the form of #ai services.

But if we stop sharing, it'll just cause more problems.

Today, I am announcing plans for the biggest change to Pandora's Tale Wiki since its founding: I am going to port the wiki away from MediaWiki and convert it to a git repository of text files. This conversion process may not be easy, but it is necessary. If we continue down the current path, I am going to burn out and will not be able to continue maintaining the wiki. There are still some things I need to determine.

1) First and most significantly, I have to figure out how to convert a MediaWiki instance into a git repository. I've found several scripts which claim to do it, but they all seem to have significant drawbacks in addition to being unmaintained. I would greatly appreciate advice from computer creatures in this regard.

2) Then I have to decide on the text format: Plaintext, gemtext, or markdown? There are ups and downs to each of them, though I'm not as worried since I believe it might be possible to convert between them later.

3) Finally I have to decide on the hosting software and platform if I want anyone else to be able to read it. Gitlab, Forgejo, sourcehut, or something else?

Once I answer these questions, I am going to move Pandora's Tale Wiki to a git repository, and then I will ask Miraheze to shut down their copy of the wiki. I don't know how long this process will take, but I believe it's the only way I can continue the wiki.

1) I have a list of wikis about webcomics.

2)I should do weird internet searches to find more wikis for the list!

3)My searches turn up some interesting sites, some of which might be eligible for the list.

4)Ugh eww gross, the search also turned up a really horrible wiki.

5)Lemme go back to my fediverse account to report this wiki for possible defera---

6)Wait, hold on, MediaWiki isn't federated. There's no need to fediblock a wiki. I'll just try to forget I saw it.
