  1. Today, I am announcing plans for the biggest change to Pandora's Tale Wiki since its founding: I am going to port the wiki away from MediaWiki and convert it to a git repository of text files. This conversion process may not be easy, but it is necessary. If we continue down the current path, I am going to burn out and will not be able to continue maintaining the wiki. I have described the reasons for the change in the article for Project: Texts About Pandora
    https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki:Texts_About_Pandora#Hosting_availability

(Yes, the name of the article is a pun on the pages "Texts from Pandora" and "Texts from Pandora 2".)
    https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora/
    https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora-2/

There are still some things I need to determine.

    1) First and most significantly, I have to figure out how to convert a MediaWiki instance into a git repository. I've found several scripts which claim to do it, but they all seem to have significant drawbacks in addition to being unmaintained. I would
greatly appreciate advice from computer creatures in this regard.

    2) Then I have to decide on the text format: Plaintext, gemtext, or markdown? There are ups and downs to each of them, though I'm not as worried since I believe it might be possible to convert between them later.

    3) Finally I have to decide on the hosting software and platform if I want anyone else to be able to read it. Gitlab, Forgejo, sourcehut, or something else?

Once I answer these questions, I am going to move Pandora's Tale Wiki to a git repository, and then I will ask Miraheze to shut down their copy of the wiki. I don't know how long this process will take, but I believe it's the only way I can continue the wiki.

  2. Today, Pandora's Tale Wiki reaches an important milestone. If the wiki were a software project, then version 0.0.1 would have been in September 2022 (the wikis founding), version 1.0 would have been in August 2023, and version 2.0 would be released today.

What's so big about today's update? It requires some explanation that doesn't fit in this instance's character limit, so please see the blog post.

  3. Today we completed a goal we've had for a long time.

The wiki now has clear delineations between canon information sourced directly from the comic, and "semi-canon" information sourced from
    @[email protected] social media.

All references to social media are accompanied by an archive link. Hence, social media posts which can't be archived (such as Discord messages) are not referenced on the wiki at all.

I waffled back and forth about whether the alt text should be considered fully canon or only semi-canon. I decided to count it as semi-canon because
a)Currently the alt text is only visible on the fediverse, not the actual comic site.
b)For Chapters 1-5, the alt text is based on drafts of the script, and the text differs in a few places from what's in the comic.

You can see all pages with semi-canon information here:

  4. Today is the one-year anniversary of our wiki moving to our own domain, https://pandorastale.wiki . We were previously on a Miraheze subdomain, and a Fandom subdomain before that. We have now been on our own domain for longer than we were on any single previous subdomain.

  5. And some(*) creatures thought I was being silly by preferring archive.today links over archive.org links on Pandora's Tale Wiki.

(*)I don't actually know if any actually did.

  6. Notice something new on our home page?

    We've long had
@[email protected] 's fediverse feed integrated into our home page, modeled after wikis for big franchises that embed social media feeds of the publisher. Until now, though, the descriptions weren't very helpful: each update just said "New note by Xan," and you had to click on the link to actually see the text of any of her posts.

    Thanks to work by
@[email protected] messing with the MediaWiki RSS extension, that has now been fixed! You can now see previews of Xan's fediverse feed straight from the wiki!
    https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki#Xan's_Fediverse_Feed

The previews do not include images: you still have to go to her fedi profile to see images she posts (and that's most likely not going to change).

  7. Notice something new on the Pandora's Tale Wiki Wiki home page?

    That's right,
    we have a poll!

Inspired by polls on Super Mario Wiki, we will periodically ask you, the readers, assorted questions about the Pandora's Tale-verse! When the poll concludes, it will be replaced by another poll, and the results will be moved to the new
    Poll Archive page.

This new feature is thanks to
@[email protected] and @[email protected] . Awhile back, I started whining on Miraheze Discord and Rainverse Matrix that there were inadequate polling options available on Miraheze. In response to my whining, Claire made a whole new MediaWiki extension, and Average Helper and Claire did the hard work to get it installed on Miraheze.

I'm also ready to preemptively announce plans for the Pandora's Tale Volume 2 Character Tournament. The character tournament will ask you to vote for your favorite character in a series of matches, with winning characters advancing to the next round until only one remains. The tournament will not begin until all chapters from Volume 2 are released, but when it does, you'll be able to vote directly from the wiki home page!

  8. Two years ago, I founded Pandora's Tale Wiki. At the time, I didn't know if I would maintain it for two months, let alone two years.

In our first year, there was almost no new Pandora's Tale content: just six single-panel preview images. In our second year, Xan has given us three entire new chapters. Hence, I had the pleasure of updating the wiki with new content as it was released.

Aside from the new content, a lot has happened in the past year. Shortly after our previous anniversary, we moved from a subdomain of Miraheze to our own domain:
https://pandorastale.wiki, while remaining with Miraheze as a host. Fandom also removed the abandoned copy of our wiki that they hosted.

In November, we co-founded the Webcomic Independent Wiki List, a list of independent and ethically-hosted wikis about webcomics. The list has since moved to
its own page separate from the wiki. We currently list eight awesome wikis about webcomics, including @[email protected] , which I am also involved with.

In January, we participated in the inaugural Indie Wiki Jam, organized by Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance. The event saw us get an all-time record of four unique editors in a single month, breaking our previous record of three unique editors in September 2022. While our wiki remains small and I remain the most active contributor, I am thrilled to see newcomers make their first edits.

Around the time of the jam, Mojeek and Stract search engines both indexed our main page. Both search engines found our site organically, as neither accepts site submissions.

What comes next? Aside from coverage of new canon content, the home page of our wiki will soon(ish) have polls. Also, stay tuned for more information about the Pandora's Tale Character Tournament 2. We also have plenty of refactoring and article revamping to do.

Thanks to everymany who visited or edited the wiki in the past two years, and special thanks to
@[email protected] , without whom none of this would be possible.

    Let's have a great Year 3.

  13. Some gender stats:

There are currently 48 characters in *Pandora's Tale* that meet the notability requirements to have their own article. Of those characters,

    22 are always female,
    16 are always male,
    1 is always nonbinary,
    1 is genderfluid,
8 have genders the readers don't know.

13 notable characters are members of the Pioneer City Resistance ("the heroes"). Of these,

    9 are always female,
    1 is always nonbinary,
    1 is genderfluid,
    0 are male,
    2 are unknown.

18 notable characters are villains. Of these,

    11 are always male,
    1 is always female,
    6 are unknown.

(And yes, Category:Cops and Category:Rich people are both contained in Category:Villains. Category:Rich people is also contained in Category:Food).

  14. It still feels really weird to me that the Stract search engine has indexed https://pandorastale.wiki since 2023 December 17, but they still haven't indexed https://minecraft.wiki despite @[email protected] being a way bigger and more popular wiki.

Stract doesn't allow site submissions, and I'm not sure how their crawler found our site, or why it hasn't found Minecraft Wiki yet.

Also, they have yet to index
https://pandorastale.com, the actual source material for the wiki. What does my fan site have over Xan's actual official comic site?

  15. Today is the one year anniversary of Pandora's Tale Wiki!

I started this project as a way to more easily update the list of characters, in the hope that I could eventually use it for a Volume 2 Character Tournament. The list of characters was the first article I created:
    https://pandorastale.miraheze.org/wiki/Characters

In the past year, PTW has grown to include 64 main-namespace articles, and 431 pages in total. Just in the past two weeks, we broke free of Fandom.

What comes next for Pandora's Tale Wiki? There are always more tasks to complete to make PTW a better reference:
    https://pandorastale.miraheze.org/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki:Things_to_Do

Currently Miraheze works as a host, and they are much better than Fandom ever was. However, there is still some uncertainty regarding their future. Miraheze is in the process of transitioning to a new board and a new organization. I will be monitoring the situation to see if we will need to move again. I hope any future moves will be easier, since we are now using stock MediaWiki.

Beyond changes to the wiki content and host, I will be considering when and if it will be best to get our own domain.

There has been almost no new Pandora's Tale canon content in the past year: the only new source material since the wiki launched are six one-panel previews Xan posted on her social media, handily collected on the article for Chapter Nine:
    https://pandorastale.miraheze.org/wiki/Chapter_Nine

The lack of new canon puts us in a position a little bit like that of WikiBound, which was founded in 2010 and has had no new Earthbound canon since then. However, we have much less material to document than the WikiBound editors. Hence, continued expansion of Pandora's Tale Wiki will depend partly on whether Xan provides us with Chapter Nine and beyond.

And as always, Pandora's Tale Wiki is a
wiki that anyone can edit. If you're a fan, you are welcome to contribute.

Let's have a great year two!
