A couple of days ago, I finished building and setting up my "Openscan Mini kit". It's a raspberry-pi powered "robot" that automatically positions a small object and takes many photos of it, and then uploads those photos to a cloud service that then creates a full 3d-model.
Scanning an object can be a little finicky, but when it works, it's magic. I took a D&D miniature and scanned it so that I now have a 3d model of that mini. I have some ideas but I'm not sure what I'm going to use it for next, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.
The project is the brainchild of Thomas Megel, and his website (which has links to buy kits of the various electronics) is at https://en.openscan.eu/openscan-mini
Note: If you want to jump in to photogrammetry (3d scanning from photos) without building/printing anything, there are other options out there. I'd try one of the phone apps such as polycam and scaniverse.
