Interesting, apparently #newsblur stores in information about an #RSS feed a calculation of "average count of entries per month", and uses that to display to you "infrequent feeds", if you so desire. I like that, and I wonder what it would take to add this to #miniflux 🤔

@desiree I used to use #Inoreader (after #Google killed #Reader) but I ended up disliking its commercial face. So I moved to #NewsBlur and happily paid €20/year for their premium version for a few years. But at some point they started upping the prices, so I experimented with variety of open-source, free, self-hosted alternatives, and finally landed on #Miniflux, which I love for its minimalism, speed, and a vast galaxy of available external connectors.

Momento nerd. Per lavoro uso tantissimo RSS e read-it-later. Fino a poco fa: Feedly (free) e Raindrop. Da un mese ho una VPS con Linux e Docker dove girano NewsBlur e Wallabag.

Il self-hosting mi piace: voglio togliere il più possibile Google e il "cloud". Ma mi chiedo se abbia senso anche sul piano economico: il costo non è esagerato, però è pur sempre un costo.

Che fare ... quindi?

Ne ho approfittato per fare un po' di pulizia tra blog chiusi o abbandonati, e ho aggiunto alcuni RSS feed di giornali locali.
Vediamo come si comporta questa settimana ma la grafica è piacevole e l'uso della piattaforma è immediato e forse con più opzioni di visualizzazione di Newsblur.

Curious what other screen reader users, disabled tech folks, or desktop-first people are using these days for news discovery.

I’ve been looking at tools like Feedly, NewsBlur, Particle, and similar RSS/AI-assisted readers because I’m trying to reduce how dependent I am on my phone for news and discovery. Right now, Google Discover is honestly the closest thing I’ve found to “surface interesting things before I even know I want to search for them,” but it’s frustratingly mobile-first.

The problem I keep running into is that a lot of RSS advice seems optimized for people who enjoy building and curating feed systems as a hobby. I don’t mind some setup, but I’m not really looking for “an RSS sync backend plus another app plus a bunch of manual curation.” At that point it feels like the workflow itself becomes the job.

I’m specifically interested in tools that work well for:

• screen readers,
• keyboard-first workflows,
• low-sensory/text-first use,
• desktop use rather than mobile-only experiences,
• and actual discovery rather than just syncing feeds I already follow.

I’ve also noticed that something can be “accessible” in theory while still being exhausting in practice. For example:

• unlabeled buttons/links,
• infinite scrolling,
• noisy or visually dense interfaces,
• excessive sound/audio cues,
• heavy curation requirements,
• or workflows that assume lots of executive-function bandwidth.

I tried Inoreader once and ran into a lot of unlabeled controls, which pretty quickly killed it for me. I’m currently looking more seriously at NewsBlur and maybe Feedly, but I’d really love to hear actual experiences from people using these day-to-day with screen readers or other accessibility needs.

Especially interested in:

• whether these tools genuinely reduce effort,
• whether they help with discovery/serendipity,
• and whether anyone has found a setup that partially replaces the “Google Discover on mobile” niche without becoming a giant maintenance project.

Would also love to hear about alternatives I may not know about.

Welp, #newsblur finally made themselves obsolete. There's no way to turn off "mark read after X days" without paying for a subscription.

What #rss readers are still usable?

It has to be

a. online (a website, not an app)

b. configurable to *REQUIRE SPECIFIC USER INPUT* to mark items as read (no timeout or "when you click away, we mark it unread" nonsense)

@greg https://www.newsblur.com/ is my go-to in this case. Its Android app + web view are really good. It's one of the few cloud services I trust and pay.

I'm even using a paid cloud service myself: #newsblur. You know how I dislike cloud services in general but this one serves me well without locking me in. 🙇

Ok so. Been using #RSS readers for a long time. Mostly #Thunderbird and some #FOSS Android apps.

Annoying to me has always been that the two don't talk to each other, and some QoL features missing. So now I am exploring #NewsBlur and #InoReader after reading that Pluralistic article. So far so good.

WHICH IS YOUR RSS READER OF CHOICE? Must work on Android & sync to an interface I can access through a browser.

I played around some, and I think what could work for me for working with #RSS is saved searches.
- #NewsBlur does that pretty well, but it's a huge beast, and LLM-flavoured
- #miniflux doesn't do them at all (you can add external things that will do that for you, I guess)
- #FreshRSS does that pretty well, but is annoying to get it to download full articles, PHP leaves me with a bit of distaste, and authentication is weird/meh (apparently they mostly use Apache for it).

I like #RSS. I have a lot of feeds. I'm interested only in *some* of the content they publish. I'm looking for a decent way to look at them.
Unfortunately most things I found either outright use LLMs for sorting/grouping, or are created using such.
#NewsBlur somewhat works for me with its filters and groups, and #miniflux https://github.com/eleith/miniflux-digest might.

Anyone knows of other options? #selfhosted or local app. Ideally not "to email", but might work too.

@psarant I've been playing around with #newsblur, but it's a beast to self-host, and I've gotten annoyed with it.
I'm playing some with #MiniFlux, with some alternative frontends it's pretty nice, and fetching full articles works pretty well, but "automatically mark those articles in this feed as read" requires external component, or setting such to be excluded from fetched feed completely.
On the other hand, from what I've seen with #FreshRSS fetching full articles takes much more effort.

I think I'm getting annoyed enough with the #SelfHosted #newsblur that it's time to look into switching over to #miniflux for my #RSS needs.

If you self host, it has no subscription, but I will never contribute to the code anytime soon, so I gladly pay the subscription fee.

@zef I like the interface of #newsblur. It can also natively ingest newsletters.
I have no idea whether interface would appeal/be accessible to "average" users.
It's a beast to self-host, especially if you want email functionality, and it has a bunch of quite outdated components.

I'm finding the Reeder Classic is constantly having issues connecting to #newsblur on my Mac. I've deleted the program, and all the files associated with it. Redownloaded it, and it still has issues.

However Unread, another RSS reader I use, seems to have no issues at all. My issue with Unread is that I can't redo the keyboard shortcuts. I guess the subscription version does that? Ugh......

I now have same article opened in #newsblur, #miniflux, and the original page, and comparing what it looks like 😂

I guess a potential argument against #newsblur may be that the creator seems to be using #Claude a bunch 🤔

Anyone seen a recent comparison of #RSS services? Specifically looking at #Inoreader, #Feedbin, #NewsBlur and #Feedly.

@newsblur Seems like #newsblur API is down as any APP that I use to read my RSS Feeds is timing out, including the official one.

@esg I use the #RSS reader #NewsBlur on both web and iOS. I’m not sure how many #WebComics I follow now but I think it’s over 100? I organize them into different folders, and have it flag new episodes by my favorites.

Only downside is it seems to only keep a month’s worth of posts, so I can’t put off reading them for *too* long.

OTOH if I haven’t read a webcomic for a month I start to ask myself whether I’m really enjoying it.
