Welp, #newsblur finally made themselves obsolete. There's no way to turn off "mark read after X days" without paying for a subscription.

What #rss readers are still usable?

It has to be

a. online (a website, not an app)

b. configurable to *REQUIRE SPECIFIC USER INPUT* to mark items as read (no timeout or "when you click away, we mark it unread" nonsense)

@greg https://www.newsblur.com/ is my go-to in this case. Its Android app + web view are really good. It's one of the few cloud services I trust and pay.

Everybody needs to use an aggregator solution for #RSS and #Atom feeds.

This way you're much much better protected and informed about stuff that happens. 😉

I'm even using a paid cloud service myself: #newsblur. You know how I dislike cloud services in general but this one serves me well without locking me in. 🙇

Mmm, I tried to do things with search and "surface those stories" and folders in #NewsBlur, and I think I broke it 🤣

I played around some, and I think what could work for me for working with #RSS is saved searches.
- #NewsBlur does that pretty well, but it's a huge beast, and LLM-flavoured
- #miniflux doesn't do them at all (you can add external things that will do that for you, I guess)
- #FreshRSS does that pretty well, but is annoying to get it to download full articles, PHP leaves me with a bit of distaste, and authentication is weird/meh (apparently they mostly use Apache for it).

I like #RSS. I have a lot of feeds. I'm interested only in *some* of the content they publish. I'm looking for a decent way to look at them.
Unfortunately most things I found either outright use LLMs for sorting/grouping, or are created using such.
#NewsBlur somewhat works for me with its filters and groups, and #miniflux https://github.com/eleith/miniflux-digest might.

Anyone knows of other options? #selfhosted or local app. Ideally not "to email", but might work too.

@psarant I've been playing around with #newsblur, but it's a beast to self-host, and I've gotten annoyed with it.
I'm playing some with #MiniFlux, with some alternative frontends it's pretty nice, and fetching full articles works pretty well, but "automatically mark those articles in this feed as read" requires external component, or setting such to be excluded from fetched feed completely.
On the other hand, from what I've seen with #FreshRSS fetching full articles takes much more effort.

I think I'm getting annoyed enough with the #SelfHosted #newsblur that it's time to look into switching over to #miniflux for my #RSS needs.

@zef I like the interface of #newsblur. It can also natively ingest newsletters.
I have no idea whether interface would appeal/be accessible to "average" users.
It's a beast to self-host, especially if you want email functionality, and it has a bunch of quite outdated components.

I'm finding the Reeder Classic is constantly having issues connecting to #newsblur on my Mac. I've deleted the program, and all the files associated with it. Redownloaded it, and it still has issues.

However Unread, another RSS reader I use, seems to have no issues at all. My issue with Unread is that I can't redo the keyboard shortcuts. I guess the subscription version does that? Ugh......

I now have same article opened in #newsblur, #miniflux, and the original page, and comparing what it looks like 😂

I guess a potential argument against #newsblur may be that the creator seems to be using #Claude a bunch 🤔

Well, let's see how much of an adventure it will be to upgrade the whole #python stack of #newsblur to something modern, or at least still supported.

Because django-prometheus constraints on requirements.txt let it upgrade to a newer version. Breaking something around connecting to database.

Anyone seen a recent comparison of #RSS services? Specifically looking at #Inoreader, #Feedbin, #NewsBlur and #Feedly.

@newsblur Seems like #newsblur API is down as any APP that I use to read my RSS Feeds is timing out, including the official one.

@esg I use the #RSS reader #NewsBlur on both web and iOS. I’m not sure how many #WebComics I follow now but I think it’s over 100? I organize them into different folders, and have it flag new episodes by my favorites.

Only downside is it seems to only keep a month’s worth of posts, so I can’t put off reading them for *too* long.

OTOH if I haven’t read a webcomic for a month I start to ask myself whether I’m really enjoying it.

Currently trying @newsblur #NewsBlur and getting a really good feeling about it. The Free tier couldn't fit all my imported subscriptions but the flow thoughtfully proposes which ones to "mute" based on their activity. Also creates multiple feeds for newsletters from a single unique address.

The Android app is snappy and has several caching options. Icons are a bit dated, but oh well… Also offers a self-hosted version, but not eager to go down that road soon.

TLDR: Don’t put all your eggs into one basket.
Use different apps and services instead of one fits all.

I'd like to add the #Atom standard. From a user's perspective, RSS and Atom are the same. If you get both feeds, use Atom.

My current aggregator is #Newsblur https://newsblur.com/ with its Android app.

Everybody should use such a feed aggregator service or program to curate his or her personal set of input. You'll notice that feed sources that publish rarely are the most important to be used via an aggregator.
