#Greenwashing isn’t excluded from poorly designed #CarboOffset schemes in Australia and a lot more needs to be done to make them work as they are intended to. I know that. But some people are just dead set against leaving a planet that can be habitable to future generations, to satify their short term self-interests and political agenda.
Opposition to a projct which involves native reforestation alongside reduced grazing land (and in this case other ‘agricultural’ production) on whatever grounds sure seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Government handouts to make #ClimateAction happen isn’t a zero sum game. In our current #NeoLIberal economic climate, that is what govt have to do to lower emmissions and save ecosystems for the greater good. It would be better if govt declared whole swathes of Country off limit to exploitation forever, but some nutters would bring up #cultural (whose culture?) and #historical (whose history?) loss as well as loss of productive agricultural land (whatever that means if clearfelling, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer are all required to make it so). I won’t even talk about the economic and ecological folly of growing meat on the hoof at industrial scales.

Feral cats likely kill far more Australian native animals than we thought: first DNA analysis. The stomach contents of roaming cats: Australian biodiversity
"Australia’s unique animal species are in sharp decline, with more than 40 mammal extinctions over the past 238 years. This atrocious mammal conservation record is the worst in the world."
"Feral, domestic and stray cats now occupy almost the entire continent and are estimated to kill more than 1.5 billion native animals each year."
"We cannot fence the whole of Australia." But pet owners could contain their free roaming cats (in the Bellingen shire). >>

First sighting of the year: big black bear sow sent her two frolicking cubs up a pine tree when my dog and I came back from our evening walk. #NativeFauna

Invasive species No 1 driver of biodiversity loss in Australia – and feral cats have biggest impact, report finds
"Australasia has been identified as a global hotspot for invasive species. In Australia, invasive species are the number one driver of biodiversity loss"
"Feral cats have the greatest environmental impact..."
"Australia has lost more native mammal species than any other continent, with more than 100 species listed as either extinct or extinct in the wild.'
“This report makes it clear that the Albanese government’s commitment to
‘ n o n e w e x t i n c t i o n s ’ will be no more than a slogan without increased focus and funding needed to prevent the next wave of invasive species."
Lyall Grieve, conservation and biosecurity analyst for the Invasive Species Council“Invasive species are likely to be a primary driver of 85% of the next round of predicted vertebrate extinctions over the next 20 years"

Haven’t done much #backyardbiodiversity observations this summer (broken toe). However, can’t miss the numerous #bumblebees working diligently in the garden. What are you guys seeing in your area?

I’m kindly asking #nature and #tech enthusiasts to stop junking up the #native hashtag. Try #NativeFlora, #NativeFauna, #ReactNative, #NativeAPIs, plain old #Linux, or a myriad of other options where you pair the lowercase adjective “native” with the noun you are describing. The #Native hashtag is an important tool for #Indigenous folks to stay current and find each other. Migwetth.

A common loon, Gavia dimmer, painted on an oyster shell. I liked the graphic quality of the loon's markings, and how the undulations of the shell played with the shape of the body.
My shells are sold in the shop at the Seattle Art Museum.

A chorus of Pacific chorus frogs (a.k.a. Pacific tree frog), painted inside oyster shells. The living frogs are tiny, but make a huge sound.
My shells are sold in the shop at the Seattle Art Museum.
