I painted this last year from a picture a friend of mine took of me at Rialto Beach on the Washington Coast around 2017. It's easily one of the most beautiful places on earth and honestly scary when you look at all the huge driftwood logs thrown up far onto the beach.

Ended up with about 20 decent prints. Im sad my original blue background concept didnt make it. The sort of messed up print i pulled had a lot of promise.

It's #PortfolioDay , which means it's an excellent day for watching the hashtag feed and finding new artists to follow. Awesome sauce.

These are some exploratory illustrations I did for my middle grade novel, "Saving Scrumpy." Most of my other art is native Pacific Northwest (USA) flora and fauna painted on oyster shells, but the goal in the back of my head has always been to illustrate my own books.

I'll probably end up self-publishing "Saving Scrumpy," once I decide my skills are up to illustrating the story. (I have ludicrously high standards for myself.)

Media is Micron pen or pen and ink, usually on vellum. Finished in Photoshop.

Two river otters, on an oyster shell.

I went to the zoo and took videos of the otters swimming, and then used screen shots to get good poses. So much easier than trying to snap a photo at the exact right moment; I can't believe it took me so long to figure that out.

A bumble bee and ceanothus blossoms.

This particular bumble bee is a queen "Two Form Bumble Bee," although there are other bees with a near identical pattern, and even the queens of this variety have several variations in coloring.

I borrowed a book from my neighbor on identifying bumble bees. She's a detail-oriented person and a lover of gardens and wildlife, but she confessed she was defeated in her attempts to learn to tell one bumble bee from another. After thumbing through the book and reading about the difficulties of identification, I'm defeated, too.

A water skipper (or strider) and duckweed, on an oyster shell.

The small, front pair of legs are used for balance/stability, while the other two pairs of legs do the work of moving.

Growing up, I spent a lot of time swimming in the pond my father had built in the woods. Seeing water skippers always makes me flash back to slowly kicking along in the summer sunshine, with my arms over the edge of a black inner tube.

The 'Shamrock' or 'Pumpkin' Orbweaver spider, Araneus trifolium... painted on an oyster shell. Most of the orb-weavers we see in our garden are Cross Orbweavers, which are European imports. The Shamrock Orbweaver is native to North America, and comes in a range of colors.

I thought a long time about how to do the web, as I wanted to keep the white background of the oyster shell. In real life, the web would be hard to see with such a light backdrop. I eventually settled on dewdrops painted with silver, and consoled myself that it was artistic license.

These little guys are everywhere on the shores of the Salish Sea, scurrying under rocks or raising their tiny claws at you, offering a fight.

I used five different reference photos (and video stills), to cobble together a leg and claw arrangement I liked. Its facial expression turned out a little more pouty than grumpy, but that's okay; I think it still works.

Cougar (Puma concolor) and shore pine, painted on an oyster shell.

One of the (many) challenges of this one was how to portray a cougar in a way that didn't make it look like it belonged airbrushed onto the side of a van. You know the look: cat with predatory stare, full moon in the background. Or, snarling cat like a tough team mascot.

Instead, I went with a cat stretch.

The shore pine (Pinus contorta) was my own super subtle joke about cats and their contortions, as well as the contortions of the oyster shell.

I like to see how other people's art goes from concept to finished product, so here's how my Douglas squirrel shell was made.

It started with a photo of the oyster shell, on which I made a sketch of my design. I used the grid method to transfer the drawing onto the shell (I erased the grid from the shell, afterward).

After that, it was a matter of layers of paint, and correcting a too-long front paw.

Another Puget Sound Garter Snake, this time with a Columbia Lily. I was a bit inspired by the work of naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749), who combined animals and plants in aesthetically pleasing, if sometimes surprising, arrangements. The snake and lily in this painting can be found in the same meadow environment, which is part of the reason I put them together. (The other part is that orange and blue are striking together.)
