One more #RolandMT32 song, as a treat. The intro to #Sierra's Space Quest 3.
MPU-401AT, MT-32, and an AWE64, all direct capture.
I'm super happy with my new setup!
Also, this song absolutely slaps.

Good morning. I am waking up to find some MIDI issue in one of my 86Box machines. It seems 86Box broke or changed something with a recent code update.
Took me a few minutes to figure this out. The Soundblaster 16 is now set to an MPU-401 address of 0x300, while 0x330 is still being used by the Roland MT-32 emulation. Windows 3.1 is satisfied using the 0x300 address after I changed its settings to use it, while DOS games like "The Secret of Monkey Island" are still working fine with the MT-32 music emulation. Before that, I had simply turned off the SB16's MIDI address altogether. Oh, well... maybe this new setting really does make more sense. 😉
Happy retro gaming, everybody!

Just for fun: I mixed the MT-32 and Adlib versions of the intro music from the MS-DOS port of Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone.
I call it the Double DAC'n remix: https://youtu.be/XF01L4GBIos

My Roland #MT32 started randomly displaying “Memory corruption” errors on its screen. Is it dying? Should I replace the capacitors? (avoided it for a while as I’m too bad at soldering)

Holy cow! ... I never realized STUNTS had an MT-32 soundtrack! This is quite a different beast compared to the old IBM PC Speaker. Of course, I knew about Adlib and Soundblaster. But not this! :blobfearful:

Apparently Sierra's Space Quest 5 will reprogram your MT-32 (or CM-64) module to have a GM instrument map. While not true for other games using MT-32, Space Quest 5 might be among the only ones, that using a GM module might give you a better sound quality.
Also for some quite interesting reason, Octavia handles MT-32/CM-64 reprogramming SysEx instructions from LucasArt games just fine, but for Sierra games Octavia fails spectacularly with SQ5 as the single exception.

I just received a ClumsyMIDI Pi Hat I've setup with a Raspberry Pi 3 and the MT32-Pi software, to use with my Atari 520ST. Giving Ultima IV a listen.
$49 from Tindie. Good so far!

Mission accomplished - even though I obviously printed it in the wrong color! :D
And don't worry about my soldering skills - I was too lazy to get my glasses, but it works! :D
The specific version I have installed, is the WP32 McCake WaveTable board, mounted on a PicoGUS ISA card.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but the #Commodore 386-SX16 seems rock solid in comparison to the super flaky #aptiva.
Slow as hell, partially incompatible graphics but with a spiffy new #SoundBlaster compatible ISA card. This is the perfect rig for early #Sierra and #LucasArts games. Maybe I should get a #MT32-Pi #McCake WaveTable board for it, or maybe that's a little overkill.

Excited to now have a Roland MT-32 as part of my collection. Great for the first Monkey Island, Simon the Sorcerer and others.
There is a slight crack on the front panel, would love to be able to replace this if anyone knows of good replicas available?

I really like my Roland D-05, it really sounds like the old D-50. However, far too many of the best D-50 presets have been claimed by Enya. As much as I try, I can't play anything but Orinoco Flow with Pizzagogo. Enya loves the D-50 and used its presets on so many of her songs, I really need to convert my old library of homemade LAPC-I/MT-32 patches to D-50 so I can play something else.

Tonight, I'm checking out an old Sierra adventure game I never played before: "The Colonel's Bequest" from 1989.
86Box is such an awesome, little emulator. I can just fire up the virtual 386, mount the 720k floppy disk images into drive A:, pick the best graphics (EGA/VGA) and music device (MT-32) and everything just works just like that!
As a retro gamer, I think this is such a treat! :ablobcatattention:

Having great fun with my Mister Pi FPGA. It's been a joy experimenting with all of the arcade, computer and console cores it provides to relive that retro gaming nostalgia in hardware emulation.
My recent addition is the MT32-Pi. Basically you can use a Raspberry Pi with this clever hat connected to the Mister SNAC port to achieve Roland MT-32 MIDI module support and it sounds wondrous. Of course I started with the iconic intro of Monkey Island!

New video: What if the Amiga sounded better?
Back in 1985 when the Amiga came out the Paula sound chip was not totally groundbreaking, but better than most of its competitors. It supported four channel stereo PCM playback. This could be used with sampled instruments to get a relatively natural sound. But what if instead the Amiga had used something like the Roland MT-32 instead...?
