  1. Today I replaced the empty battery of my vintage #Roland #Juno106 #Synthesizer.

An empty battery in this old unit results in complete amnesia of all sound presets. (Unlike the #Ensoniq #ESQ1, that – at least with later firmwares – comes up with the factory presets in such an event, and then continues having dementia…)

The first time I had done so, I had installed a battery holder to make things easier. The original battery is soldered into the board.

Always fun is to restore the backup via the #tapeInterface with that #datassette sound.

I really love how the Juno 106 is constructed. Easy access if you know those 6 screws… it's a pretty well-made, all-solid device.

Today's Roland (and BOSS) gear feels like cheap plastic toys compared to this. I guess you have to go for an expensive #Sequential synth today if you want this quality.

The Juno 106 synthesizers were made from 1984 to 1988. My dad had bought this unit brand new when I was a kid.

  6. Today, let us remember the Godfather of Techno, Klaus Schulze, with a live performance recorded back in 1977

May his Soul Rest in Peace ❤️

  7. Okay, here's a long shot for the #Fedi hive mind. If you are in the intersection of "#musician or musician-adjacent in the 1980s" and "keyboard / #synthesizer aficionado", this one is for you.

In the mid- to late-80s, I used to spend a lot of time in music / #instrument stores (not selling CDs, selling guitars and amps and drums and whatnot). Synthesizer tech was advancing rapidly at this point, with digital starting to overtake analog by leaps and bounds.

At some point, one of the stores got a new #keyboard model in. I can't swear to it, but I think it was either a #Roland or a #Korg. This one had a floppy drive built in, on the side of the #synth. And they had a demo on a floppy disk that was incredible at the time.

It wasn't an official #demo disk. It was a normal consumer floppy, presumably copied far and wide. Hand-Sharpied on it was the name/title "Amin Phone". It was a musical, bright and upbeat piece, rock/pop, maybe 30s long, and included digital samples of a person's voice.

The entire thing was a ridiculous #answering machine outgoing #message. I think there was even a sampled voice at the end taken from someone leaving a message, commenting on it being over-the-top or something.

"Amin phone" is unsearchable on the 'net. Everyone has a phone, and there are millions of people named Amin or el-Amin.

Anyone else remember this? Anyone actually able to point to a recording of it?

  8. Fediverse #music #synthesizer players, I need your kind help ❤️

I haven't played for 10 years (on a #Yamaha PSR435) and want to get back to it.

I'm a modest player. I love rock, ballads, 90s music... I can play chords, but if melody is too rich, I can't play both 😅

A local reseller showed my the #Roland JD-Xi, looks great, but I'm afraid it will be too "electronic music" oriented, and that it might allow to make #samples and #loops but not actually play the music?

What would you recommend to play (and maybe record) chords (chords looper?), potentially record actual parts of a melody (like record 1 voice and play the other)?

    Thanks a lot!

  9. Wo-hoo! I was wondering how hard it would be to record #Roland v-#drums into #Renoise to dedicated tracks for each pad group. The answer: not hard at all.

    forum.renoise.com/t/midi-drum-

Ofc you can record them directly to #DAW, but going via Renoise I can separate them right away for mixing. This way it’ll resemble regular drum mixing a lot. _And_ I can select different Abbey Road #drumset for every track, if I like. (And quite often I do.)

    Yeahyeahyeah, I’m a snobby toff with #drum #sounds, I know.

  13. Today, I’m meeting The Gentleman from Native Instruments for the first time. It’s a fantastic piano, a 1908 Bechstein, and the sound is delightful.

  14. Got my Korg NanoKontrol 2 yesterday, and I’m really happy with it. The build feels solid and it’s a great little device. Tried it out in Zenbeats last night and loved what it can do (still figuring out how to set up a few things though).

If you love MIDI files and use macOS 14+, give it a go! It's free!
