  1. Dear all, don't forget to hit the #favorite star whenever you appreciate a post!

It is like #smiling 🙂 to someone who keeps the door open for you: It costs *nothing*, and the more you do it, the more people feel appreciated 😊 The more they feel appreciated, the more they do what you appreciate: posting stuff you like! 🐴 🍄 🎸

  2. Me llama la atención y no termino de darme cuenta: ¿Se usa menos por acá el faveo o es algo técnico (que no se muestran los favoritos de otras instancias, por ejemplo)? #MastodonEtiquette

  3. Suppose I have two Fediverse accounts, which I use for different purposes. I want to follow you from both accounts. What would you like me to do?

  4. Question: Is it bad etiquette to repost reddit content onto Mastodon even if I source the content back to the original poster?

  5. what is the proper #MastodonEtiquette of replying to a follower only post? Should I make the reply follower only myself, or would that hinder followers of the original poster from seeing it, if they don't also follow me? Unlisted maybe?

  6. If someone posts a gripe about something (don't worry, it's Instagram) and you chime in to pile on the gripe vibes, is it poor form to add a hashtag in your reply that might draw people to the thread?

It seems this shouldn't be done across the board. If I know a friend on here is not a fan of many replies, I'm not adding a hashtag, but that's about the extent of my protocol here. I'd love to hear if anyone has a decent way to navigate this grey area.

  7. I am an aspiring follower of the four agreements. The hardest for me is probably #3: Don't make assumptions. This comes into play a lot on Mastodon, where, in my case, I am limited to 500 words. It is difficult to coalesce a complex, nuanced thought into that space. Because of that, I try to ask someone what they mean before pre-emptively blocking them. #DonMiguelRuiz #TheFourAgreements #Blocking #MastodonEtiquette #AskDontAssume

  8. Do companies like @BleepingComputer donate to infosec.exchange @jerry?

I like them and don't care either way; I'm just curious. None of my business is an acceptable answer.

Really my question is, in general, are companies expected to donate to the servers that host them?

  9. I'm tempted to "quote post" (link) to noteworthy posts and add my own hashtags to them to try to draw attention to quality posts.

What do you think? Is this a good idea?

A lot of accounts don't add hashtags to their public posts when they are clearly sharing it. Or would this potentially be too intrusive? 🤔

  10. #fediverse etiquette question: Is it bad/rude to browse an instance and then follow a bunch of accounts from that instance? Seems like it maybe adds strain to that instance without contributing as much or something

  11. Mastodon regulars: don’t favorite things. It’s useless and doesn’t do anything.

Me: determinedly favoriting everything like a weirdo anyway because I like it

  12. I've Pinned a few posts and it doesn't seem to work on Mastodon the way it does on the other place; rather than new pins replacing the old, they pile up. That gives me a disincentive to do this in case it makes it harder for people to see my latest non pinned posts. One alternative could be not pinning, but Boosting some of my own posts. This seems to be possible, but is it frowned upon? Are there etiquette rules against that? What do others think? #MastodonEtiquette

  13. @reidrac Do you have any advice about tagging in the conversation beneath the post? I usually just hit the comment balloon, type my comment, and hit publish. But then someone told me I should remove all hashtags from the comments. Not sure if that is correct. Thoughts?

  14. @atomicpoet "Don't even try to force people to see something they don't want to see" Isn't even *just* good #MastodonEtiquette or #fediquette—it's basic human decency.

(Unless you have a *very* good reason to push something past someone else's established boundaries, which in most cases, you don't.)

  15. While I always try to caption general images, I have not been in the habit of doing so for generative and other abstract art works. I do not know what I can say that will be helpful other than “abstract generative art work”. What do other people recommend? Especially on genart.social and similar communities?

  16. The second question I have about #MastodonEtiquette relates to whether it is considered a bad idea to Boost what someone says in a chat between two or more members. This has never bothered me before but some may want their words said away from the hubbub to be kept between those involved in the conversation. I'll only Boost it if I think the person has made a good point and others may want to hear what they say and maybe Boost it in turn. What do others think? Until I get feedback I'll refrain.

  17. Okay, can I just say that as a #neurodivergent person (in my case, we're talking about #ADHD) who tends to take things literally, and as someone who has #autistic family members who can't easily identify sarcasm -- ESPECIALLY in textual forms -- that I REALLY WISH people would put something like /sarcasm at the end of a satirical #post even if you think that post is "obviously" sarcastic or in jest?

Not everybody who reads what you posted is automatically going to realize you weren't being serious, folks! So please, PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy... try to remember to clearly label your attempts at #satire as such.

  18. CW: from Twitter

@systemchange Hi! Just wanted to share a friendly note that when you post something from Twitter here, it does not look the same and you will likely be blocked or muted by quite a lot of people. I don't think that is what you want... and I think you have something of value to say... and so, my recommendation is to #reformat your posts for Mastodon so they are more like a short personal #essay that is #friendly. Or #outraged, that's ok too.

There is a lot of chat going on about #CW or Content Warnings, so you might read up on that too, and decide if your work should be shared under a CW. I am sharing this with you because ... we're a community. I'm new to the #community ... and so these are my new #perspectives.

Please see my page for tips. And thank you for reading! This is intended in the #spirit of #encouraging #healthy #diaglogue.
