Are were you supposed to send it as a private mention? Or not send it at all?

What is the Mastodon etiquette regarding boosting parrot RSS accounts’ posts from time to time? I’ve recently gone on a bender following lots of parroted RSS accounts who unfortunately represent original accounts that aren’t on Mastodon, but it’s dawned on me that perhaps the original posters of such content might not appreciate me or anyone else sharing it on another platform. I have created an alias on chaotic.fun for my union.place account.

Please advise how I may migrate my contacts to chaotic.fun in a timely manner.

Multiple requests to you, to provide a migration path, were not handled in a timely manner, and I have been cut off from my friends. This is what I mean by my account being held hostage.

Not letting me migrate my contacts is not good Mastodon etiquette.

Please advise how to proceed.

Also, I will blog extensively about "why" my account was suspended. You can get a preview from my appeal of the suspension.

what is the proper #MastodonEtiquette of replying to a follower only post? Should I make the reply follower only myself, or would that hinder followers of the original poster from seeing it, if they don't also follow me? Unlisted maybe?

If someone posts a gripe about something (don't worry, it's Instagram) and you chime in to pile on the gripe vibes, is it poor form to add a hashtag in your reply that might draw people to the thread?

It seems this shouldn't be done across the board. If I know a friend on here is not a fan of many replies, I'm not adding a hashtag, but that's about the extent of my protocol here. I'd love to hear if anyone has a decent way to navigate this grey area.

I am an aspiring follower of the four agreements. The hardest for me is probably #3: Don't make assumptions. This comes into play a lot on Mastodon, where, in my case, I am limited to 500 words. It is difficult to coalesce a complex, nuanced thought into that space. I like them and don't care either way; I'm just curious. None of my business is an acceptable answer.

What do you think? Is this a good idea?

A lot of accounts don't add hashtags to their public posts when they are clearly sharing it. Or would this potentially be too intrusive? 🤔

Question about CW and fediverse etiquette. Should I CW politics? (For me politics is an intrinsic part of human experience.) Personally I love to bump into the unexpected, and scrolling past long strings of CW headers is a bit discouraging to me. That's why I set CWs to automatically open. But I don't want to cause any thoughtless distress to others!

I've Pinned a few posts and it doesn't seem to work on Mastodon the way it does on the other place; rather than new pins replacing the old, they pile up. That gives me a disincentive to do this in case it makes it harder for people to see my latest non pinned posts. One alternative could be not pinning, but Boosting some of my own posts. This seems to be possible, but is it frowned upon? Are there etiquette rules against that? What do others think? #MastodonEtiquette

@reidrac Do you have any advice about tagging in the conversation beneath the post? I usually just hit the comment balloon, type my comment, and hit publish. But then someone told me I should remove all hashtags from the comments. Not sure if that is correct. Thoughts?

(Unless you have a *very* good reason to push something past someone else's established boundaries, which in most cases, you don't.)

While I always try to caption general images, I have not been in the habit of doing so for generative and other abstract art works. I do not know what I can say that will be helpful other than “abstract generative art work”. What do other people recommend? Especially on genart.social and similar communities?

The second question I have about #MastodonEtiquette relates to whether it is considered a bad idea to Boost what someone says in a chat between two or more members. This has never bothered me before but some may want their words said away from the hubbub to be kept between those involved in the conversation. I'll only Boost it if I think the person has made a good point and others may want to hear what they say and maybe Boost it in turn. What do others think? Until I get feedback I'll refrain.

I have a question about Mastodon etiquette. Two questions actually. Firstly I saw on my feed earlier several people complaining about the inability to quote tweet here. Previously everyone seemed to accept the explanations for why it's not allowed and I think the explanations are good. But those who disagree should be debated with rather than allowed to sulk among themselves. #MastodonEtiquette

Okay, can I just say that as a #neurodivergent person (in my case, we're talking about #ADHD) who tends to take things literally, and as someone who has #autistic family members who can't easily identify sarcasm -- ESPECIALLY in textual forms -- that I REALLY WISH people would put something like /sarcasm at the end of a satirical #post even if you think that post is "obviously" sarcastic or in jest?

Not everybody who reads what you posted is automatically going to realize you weren't being serious, folks! So please, PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy... try to remember to clearly label your attempts at #satire as such.

Is there any appreciable difference between CamelCase and droopingCamelCase? That is, does it matter if the first letter of the *first* word of the hashtag is capitalized?

@cavalaxis I don't know if there's a broad consensus but there is a movement to make #hashtags instead of users the proper #MastodonEtiquette for #FollowFriday and the like. The rationale is that some people wouldn't appreciate the sudden extra attention if they get tagged by someone popular. And you can follow a tag as easy as a user on Mastodon.

I'm a fantasy art fan so I'm partial to #gryphon and #dragon and the like.

Content warnings are incredibly easy to apply. If you don't want to lose followers like me, consider using one when you post something with F bombs or nudity.

I sometimes scroll on short breaks at work, and I'm not risking my job to follow some amusing content, so I tend to unfollow it when I see it without a warning applied. Plus, it's just kinda nice as a courtesy?

If you edit a post after a reply you should in the reply or as a thread state that you have modified the original #Post or #Toot because it creates confusion and misunderstanding which leads to fear of engagement in serious discussions. This is how we should handle #MastodonEtiquette

So, what's the #MastodonEtiquette around adding #hashtags to other folks' posts (via reply)? If I see a good post without tags (or too-general tags), I want to add tags for easier lookup in future. Seems like a town square vs. public privacy thing. Is it just best judgment?
